Deer fence height UK

Updated: October 2026

A black roll labelled deer fence looks like the quick answer after the beans disappear overnight. What you need first is the clear height and the hole size for the deer you actually have, because a 2.1 m label is not yet a fence. The [deer fence comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/deer-fence) puts the three amazon.co.uk nets side by side once those numbers are fixed. A pick among them, including buying none, is on [best deer netting](/hub/fencing-and-wire/deer-fence/sub/deer-fence-best). Updated in October 2026 by Peter F. from the listings and public UK sources. This is not a lab test.

Height for muntjac, roe, and larger deer

The Royal Horticultural Society puts garden deer mesh at about 1.5 m for muntjac and about 1.8 m for other deer. Countryside Stewardship FG9 uses that split as a woodland minimum, not as a garden by-law: 1.5 m for roe and muntjac, and 1.8 m for red, sika, and fallow. On ground over about 5 hectares or along a road, Forest Research wants 2 m for red and sika. In England a new fence is often allowed up to 2 m, but only up to 1 m next to a highway used by vehicles, and not in a listed curtilage.

Mesh maxima, not a bigger hole

Hole size is a maximum. The RHS and FG9 use about 75 mm for muntjac and about 200 mm by 150 mm for other deer. The British Deer Society warns that a muntjac head can pass a 100 mm hole and snag its antlers coming back. Feitore states 1.9 cm (19 mm) at about £14.59, under the muntjac maximum. Reviews still describe animals caught in the mesh. Neither MEKKAPRO listing prints a hole size. UK reviews of the 19.8 m roll measure about 20 mm to 22 mm, and that figure must not be copied onto the 27.4 m listing.

Length, fixings, and the gate

Roll length is a perimeter. Add the sides, a return for the gate, and an overlap. A 19.8 m roll covers about 5 m by 4 m with a little spare. Pegs are not posts. MEKKAPRO claims 10 pegs and 50 ties, and UK reviews of the 19.8 m roll often called that count short. Feitore names none, and none of the three includes posts. The sequence is on how to install deer netting. A long line or a grant scheme is a steel job.

What these listings are allowed to claim

The three listings are black polypropylene about 2.1 m high, from about £14.59 to about £36.99. Feitore states 789 g and no GSM. Both MEKKAPRO titles say 40 GSM. No British Standard is printed, so this page does not claim BS 1722 or EN 10223. Feitore is 4.3 from 10,395, with two UK reviews in the extract. The shorter MEKKAPRO is 4.2 from 39, with 12 UK reviews in an extract of 36. The longer line is 4.7 from 7, with no UK deer result. Seven reviews do not outrank a printed mesh. Common questions

How tall does a garden deer fence need to be in the UK?
For a garden, the RHS describes about 1.5 m of mesh for muntjac and about 1.8 m for other deer. If you do not know the species, plan 1.8 m. FG9 uses similar minima for woodland grants, and Forest Research goes higher on areas over about 5 hectares or along roadsides. A suburban bed is not that roadside job.
What mesh stops muntjac without catching antlers?
Muntjac mesh is judged by a maximum of about 75 mm in RHS and FG9 guidance. The British Deer Society says a head can pass a 100 mm hole and snag antlers coming back. A smaller hole meets that maximum and can still tangle birds or tear if the plastic is light. Feitore is the only listing here that prints a mesh, at 1.9 cm.
Is 2.1 m of net the same as 2.1 m of clear fence?
No. All three listings state a height of 2.1 m. You lose height if the posts are shorter, if you lap the bottom on the ground, or if the net sags between posts. A 150 mm lap for muntjac comes off the clear height unless the posts were planned long enough to keep the top where you measured it.
Why do two of these listings not print a hole size?
The 19.8 m and 27.4 m MEKKAPRO pages state 40 GSM, length, and a claim of 10 pegs and 50 ties. They do not state mesh. UK reviewers of the shorter roll have measured about 20 mm to 22 mm themselves. That measurement is not printed on the 27.4 m listing, and this extract has no UK review for that ASIN.
Do I need planning permission for a 1.8 m garden fence in England?
Often a fence up to 2 m does not need an application in England, but the limit is 1 m next to a highway used by vehicles, and the allowance does not apply in the curtilage of a listed building. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own rules. A 1.8 m deer fence on a back boundary is a different case from the same height facing a road.
Are posts included with a deer-net roll?
Not on these three listings. Feitore does not name pegs or posts. MEKKAPRO claims 10 ground pegs and 50 zip ties, which UK reviews of the 19.8 m roll found in the box and often called too few. Pegs hold a bottom edge. They do not hold a 1.8 m clear height. You buy posts separately, and the gate has to match the fence.
