Plastic deer netting or a wire fence

Updated: October 2026

A search for a deer fence mixes an about £14.59 garden net with galvanised mesh and a grant specification. Plastic deer netting or a wire fence is that fork. The three amazon.co.uk rolls in the [deer fence comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/deer-fence) are the light end. Height and mesh, before you buy any of them, are on the [deer fence buying guide](/hub/fencing-and-wire/deer-fence/sub/deer-fence-buying-guide). This page is allowed to say do not buy them. Updated in October 2026 by Peter F. from listings and public UK sources. No lab test, and no invented price per metre for permanent wire.

Three different deer nets

The phrase covers three products. First, the light polypropylene here: Feitore at about £14.59, 2.1 m by 30 m, mesh 1.9 cm, and two MEKKAPRO titles at about £29.99 and about £36.99, both 40 GSM, both claiming pegs and ties, neither stating a hole size. Second, heavier shop plastic around 80 g/m², whose sellers still say numerous deer need galvanised wire. Third, steel on strainers. Electric tape is not that class. Permanent mesh is on wire mesh fence.

What fails first on the light roll

The British Deer Society tells gardeners to avoid lightweight plastic because deer tear it and can tangle in it. On Feitore, one UK note says deer stayed out and another says deer ripped the net. Other reviews describe animals caught in the 1.9 cm mesh. Slack makes that worse, and a stock fence topped with parallel wires can trap a hind leg. Do not upgrade a light net by adding that wire. The top pick and the best value are argued on best deer netting, and only for a small watched bed. A torn net replaced with the same roll repeats the failure.

When the specification says metal

FG9 is a countryside stewardship grant for woodland and wood pasture, not a rule for a vegetable bed. It sets minima around 1.5 m for roe and muntjac and 1.8 m for red, sika, and fallow. FG10 is the temporary item. The Scottish Forestry Grant Scheme asks for woven high-tensile, mild steel, or welded rectangular mesh, and it rejects a combination fence. You cannot mix plastic with stock wire and call it that grant. Minima there are 1.5 m for roe and 1.8 m for red, sika, or fallow. These listings do not sell steel, so this page has no fair price per metre for wire.

A small bed can still stay on plastic

A small watched bed is the limit. You add the posts, peg the base, close a matching gate, and walk it after wind. Inside that box, the 19.8 m MEKKAPRO roll has the UK review file, and Feitore has the printed mesh and the lower price. Outside it, buy none of them. Under the Deer Act 1991 a fence may exclude deer. Traps and poisoned bait are not fencing. If you cannot watch the bed, the honest product is steel. A purchase through a link here can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Is a plastic deer net the same as a wire deer fence?
No. The plastic in this comparison is polypropylene about 2.1 m high, from about £14.59 to about £36.99, either 789 g with a stated 1.9 cm mesh or a 40 GSM title with no hole size. A wire deer fence is galvanised mesh on posts and strainers. Heavier shop plastic around 80 GSM is a third product, and its own sellers still warn that numerous deer need galvanised wire.
When is 40 GSM the wrong buy?
When the line is long, the deer are numerous, or a grant scheme is paying. 40 GSM is the MEKKAPRO title, not a British Standard, and it is not half of an 80 GSM specialist mesh in any test this page can cite. It is also the wrong buy when the listing omits the hole size and you need to check a muntjac maximum of about 75 mm.
What does a grant fence have to be made of?
The Scottish Forestry Grant Scheme asks for woven high-tensile, mild steel, or welded rectangular mesh, and it rejects a combination fence. FG9 is the England woodland and wood-pasture grant and FG10 is the temporary item. Both are grant schedules, not garden by-laws. These amazon rolls are not claimed as compliant with either schedule. Read the current GOV.UK or Rural Payments page before you order steel to a payment.
Can I mix plastic net with stock wire and still call it a deer fence?
You can physically tie them together. You cannot call that mix a Scottish grant deer fence, because combination fences are not acceptable under that item. The Deer Society also warns that stock net with parallel wires above it can trap a hind leg. A light plastic hem on chicken wire does not become a deer specification. If the scheme or the herd needs metal, use metal for the whole line.
Will light net tangle a deer?
It can. The British Deer Society advises against lightweight plastic and nylon mesh for that reason, and against slack tape. Feitore reviews include animals caught in the mesh, and one UK review says deer ripped the net rather than being turned by it. A tight, watched, short run reduces the chance. It does not remove the warning. Take seasonal net down when the bed is finished.
Is there a fair price per metre for steel deer fence?
Not from these listings. They sell polypropylene rolls, not strained galvanised mesh, so any per-metre steel figure would be invented or borrowed from another shop. Collins Nets' £152.40 is their price for an 80 GSM plastic roll, 1.8 m by 100 m, not for wire. Ask a fencing supplier for a current steel price when you have the length and the specification.
