Garden gate latch types: which job you are buying

Updated: October 2026

You are at a timber side gate that will not stay shut, or will not stay open in the wind. Garden gate latch types are separate fittings. A ring works from both faces, a slide bolt is a bar on one face, an auto catch clicks home only after you shut the gate, and a short hook in these reviews holds the gate open. The [gate latch comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/gate-latch) ranks eleven amazon.co.uk listings at stored shelf prices, not a live check on 19 October 2026. Peter F. used those listings and public UK guides, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What each garden gate latch type is for

A ring latch puts a ring on each face and a bar through the leaf, so you lift it from the garden or the path. Jacksons Fencing describes that as a catch. A Suffolk latch does the same job with a thumb piece, and none of these eleven products is a Suffolk. The rings here are Keypak at about £9.99, the zinc ring at about £8.99, and XFORT at about £17.99. A slide bolt is a bar on one face for the garden side after dark, with no street handle unless you can reach over. Those two mechanisms are on the ring latch or slide bolt page.

What an auto latch does

Keypak’s auto latch B0DRW6QZY7 is about £6.99 and listed at 50 mm. The title talks about self-closing. Wern Wood says an auto latch does not pull the gate closed, and Abbey Hardware pairs that catch with a separate spring hinge when the leaf has to return. One reviewer wrote that this unit is not self-closing. Reviews that like it say it catches when you push the gate shut. The arm is called thin, screw heads shear, and one review describes the arm snapping at the neck in under six months. Weielt B0FCFSGFND, about £8.99, adds a cable so you can pull the catch from the far side. One reviewer got that cable through a 4 inch post, which is one report, and one spring left the body after a day.

Finish, without a security grade

Black powder coat is paint. Egerton treats hot-dip galvanising as the usual inland zinc coat, and 316 stainless as the case for salt air. Stainless without a grade is not 316, and black rings in this set already carry early-rust reviews. SAYAYO B08JV2B4WL states SUS 304, at about £8.49, with an 8 mm padlock hole and no padlock. FOBOZONE B0H2TPGWJP states 304, at about £13.99, and includes a 25 mm brass padlock that reviewers call small. SAYAYO B09M8KL21K says stainless and states no grade. ASelected’s title says stainless, then reviewers call the plate thin. Both hooks say stainless without a grade. The rings are iron or zinc under a black coat.

What this comparison can sell you

Hold the gate open, and the two hooks match. Leryati B0CNXQR39W is about £3.99, with 4.7 from 1,867 reviews, and the title says one piece while a bullet says two. TOPYWMSP B0DBQQ479V is about £4.19, with 4.6 from 318 reviews, and lists screws plus wall plugs. The 4.7 line is that hold-open job, so stars are the wrong first filter for a shut latch. After you shut the leaf yourself, the Keypak auto is 4.3 from 103 and the Weielt cable catch is 4.4 from 42. Both sides on timber you can drill points you at the three rings. Who should skip each listing is on best garden gate latch.

Common questions

Does an automatic gate latch pull the gate shut?
An auto latch catches when the leaf is already at the keep. It does not draw the gate closed. Abbey Hardware pairs that catch with a separate spring hinge when the leaf must return by itself. Keypak B0DRW6QZY7 is titled as self-closing, and one reviewer said it is not. Weielt B0FCFSGFND adds a cable so you can open the catch from the other side.
Is a cabin hook a garden gate latch?
In this set it is a hook and eye of about 100 mm, and the reviews use it to hold a gate or door open or to stop a leaf banging. Wern Wood treats a cabin hook as that restraint, and says you still want a ring, a Suffolk, or an auto latch if the gate also has to stay shut in daily use.
When would you buy a Suffolk latch instead?
Choose a Suffolk when you want a thumb piece on one face and a bar that still lifts from the other side. Abbey and Wern Wood describe that as the usual UK thumb latch, distinct from rings on a spindle. No Suffolk is among these eleven ASINs. Buying one means leaving this table, even though the job is an ordinary both-sides garden-gate catch.
Does black powder coat mean the latch is galvanised?
Powder coat is a painted finish. Hot-dip galvanising is a zinc coat, and Egerton’s guide treats that as the usual inland treatment, with 316 stainless as the coastal case. XFORT B0BG68P97H is malleable iron with a black powder coat, and reviews mention rust within about two weeks. A black coat on the Keypak ring and the zinc ring is the same sort of finish claim.
Is stainless the same as 316 beside the sea?
Egerton distinguishes unnamed stainless from 316, which is the grade that guide points to in salt air. SAYAYO B08JV2B4WL states SUS 304, and FOBOZONE B0H2TPGWJP states 304. The other SAYAYO bolt, both hooks, and the ASelected title say stainless without a grade. None of these listings states 316. A coastal gate is outside what this table can specify, even when the inland reviews have not mentioned rust yet.
When is a keyed lock a different category?
A keyed lock is a different buy when you need a key rather than a catch or a padlock hole. Jacksons separates a ring latch from security hardware, and this table has no keyed lock in it. A shelf snapshot put some keyed gate locks nearer £24–£34, which is context from an older look at Gate Hardware, not a price for these ASINs.
