Child proof garden gate latch: what those bullets leave out

Updated: October 2026

You have a dog, or a small child, and a listing that says the latch will keep them in the garden. A child proof garden gate latch, in the sense those bullets imply, is not what this set has been shown to be. The sentences name no height, no closer, and no test. The [gate latch comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/gate-latch) is the product table, at stored shelf prices, not a live check on 20 October 2026. Peter F. used the listing lines, RoSPA’s play-area note, and Jacksons Fencing’s garden-gate security article. A child or a dog was not tested against these latches. What the bullets in this set say

Five listings mention children or pets and none of them names a height. XFORT talks about keeping the latch out of reach and gives no height. The zinc ring does the same. Keypak’s ring talks about low security against accidental opening, which is a weaker claim than a child-proof test, and it is still a ring catch. Weielt mentions pets, children, and visitors. ASelected mentions children and pets. No page in the sources used here tested those sentences. MagnaLatch appears in trade writing and is not in this set. Leryati’s reviews include a playhouse and a dog at a bedroom door.

Height and reach, without a statute

There is no statutory child-proof latch height in the sources used here. RoSPA’s note is for play areas, not a house gate. It asks for a minimum 12 mm gap so fingers are not trapped, a 60 to 110 mm gap under a play gate, catches that should not project more than 25 mm, and operation from both sides. It does not set a domestic latch height. Joe’s Fencing suggests moving a bolt up to around 1.5 m, and The Nimble Gate suggests around 1.8 m. Those figures are that firm’s advice, not a statute for England, Scotland, or Northern Ireland.

A latch does not close the gate

An auto catch holds the leaf after you have shut it. Wern Wood says an automatic latch does not pull the gate closed. Abbey Hardware pairs that catch with a spring hinge when the leaf has to return, and TATE and B&Q sell a spring closer on its own. An XFORT pack on diy.com pairs an 8 inch spring with an auto latch, which shows the closer is a separate part. None of the ASINs here is that spring. A closer is its own buy, on the garden gate closer comparison. Keypak’s auto listing says the gate closes and locks. One review says it is not self-closing, and the arm is called easy to bend.

What else has to be true

A latch at the top of the stile does not stop a dog pushing the bottom rail, and it does not close a crawl gap. Jacksons’ about 50 mm under a domestic gate is that firm’s clearance note. RoSPA’s 60 to 110 mm under a play gate is a different gap for a different place. If the leaf sags, the keep misses. A high bolt can also block the way out. Jacksons says a fire escape still matters, and hardware a small child cannot reach may be hardware you cannot reach quickly with a pushchair or in the dark. The mechanisms are on the gate latch buying guide.

Common questions

Will a ring latch stop a small child?
Not on the evidence in this set. A ring is a catch you lift from either face, which is useful for adults and also within reach of many children if it sits at hand height. Keypak’s ring mentions low security against accidental opening and does not name a height. XFORT and the zinc ring mention being out of reach and do not name a height either.
What height should a child-resistant bolt be?
The sources used here do not state a statutory height. Joe’s Fencing suggests around 1.5 m and The Nimble Gate around 1.8 m, as those firms’ own advice. Jacksons talks about a top bolt so a child does not reach it if a middle bolt is left open, and still says someone can reach over a top bolt.
Does an auto latch stop the gate being left open?
It stops the gate only after the leaf has met the keep. It does not fetch a gate that is standing open. Keypak’s auto listing says the gate closes and locks, and one review says the unit is not self-closing. Weielt catches when shut. If people leave the gate ajar, the catch never gets its chance. A closer is a separate product.
What is the difference between an auto latch and a gate spring?
An auto latch is a catch at the closed position. A gate spring, or a spring hinge, is what pulls the leaf towards that position. Wern Wood separates them. TATE and B&Q sell the closer on its own. A trade kit that pairs an 8 inch spring with an auto latch still treats them as two parts. No ASIN in this set is that spring.
Does RoSPA set a domestic latch height?
No. The RoSPA page cited here is about gates into play and wheeled-sports areas. The points that travel are a 12 mm minimum gap so fingers are not trapped, catches that should not project more than 25 mm, a 60 to 110 mm gap under a play gate, and operation from both sides.
What about a dog pushing the bottom of the gate?
A latch, however high, does not stiffen a loose bottom rail or close a crawl gap. Jacksons suggests about 50 mm under a domestic gate so a child does not crawl. That figure is not a test of a dog nosing under your leaf. The children-and-pets lines on XFORT, the zinc ring, Weielt, and ASelected do not report a push test.
When is a keyed lock or a joiner the next step?
When a catch or an ungraded padlock is not the security you need, or when the leaf sags so the keep misses. Jacksons treats a ring as short of a lock, and a top bolt as something a person can still reach over. Which side the bar sits on is on ring latch or slide bolt.
