Galvanised or PVC mesh panels for a British garden

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing galvanised or PVC mesh panels because a black fence and the word rustproof have started to look like the same promise. A colour is not a process, and the process is what still covers the steel after a wet fortnight. Peter F. compared the finishes on the five amazon.co.uk listings in the [mesh fence panel comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/mesh-fence-panel) on 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Height, the hole and the wire sit on the [mesh fence panel buying guide](/hub/fencing-and-wire/mesh-fence-panel/sub/mesh-fence-panel-buying-guide). None of these five prints galvanised after welding.

Galvanised before or after the weld

Galvanising is a zinc coat. When it is applied, relative to the weld, changes the joint. F.H. Brundle’s guide of 7 October 2026 says wire galvanised before welding loses zinc where the heat burns it off, and hot-dip after welding coats the joints as well. None of the five listings prints galvanised after welding, hot-dip, or BS EN 10223-4. Trade sheets print a hole and a wire. Those words are missing on Koknows, Kingido and LIANTRAL. A black border can still be the right bed edge. It is not a hot-dip panel because one photograph looks grey.

What PVC adds, and what it hides

PVC is a plastic skin. On a specified panel it usually sits over wire that was already galvanised, and you only know that if the seller says so. F.H. Brundle notes that PVC can crack and hide the steel. Flexipanel is the PVC product here. The bullets say the panels are PVC coated to limit rust. Reviews describe the colour as green. The product-information block does not print a colour, a height tied to about £36, an aperture or a wire diameter. The listing does not say the core is galvanised. Do not add that sentence. If you crop Flexipanel to a hedge gap, the cut is bare steel and rusts first.

Powder coat and the word rustproof

Powder coat is a baked finish. It is not PVC, and it is not galvanising. Thealyn names 4 mm welded wire with a black powder coating, about 60 cm by 3.3 m, at about £34.99. The gap is unprinted. It does not say zinc was applied after the weld. LIANTRAL says baking paint and an anti-rust coating, on a 43 cm pack at about £22.74. Baking paint is not a zinc thickness. Kingido says rust-resistant and names no paint, powder or zinc. Koknows says rustproof. One review reports rust at about 14 days. That comment does not prove every panel failed. It does mean the word has already met a wet fortnight, for that buyer. Black on Kingido or Koknows is not Thealyn’s powder coat.

Which finish for which garden

Choose a named hot-dip, galvanised after welding, when the joint matters and the panel will stay out all year. That description is a trade sheet. It is not one of these five ASINs. Choose PVC when you want a colour, you have confirmed the sheet size, and you will seal any cut. Flexipanel is the only PVC name here, and only after you know which height about £36 is. Choose Thealyn’s powder coat when the job is a short black bed edge and you want the finish and the 4 mm wire in writing. Leave Koknows’ rustproof line and Kingido’s rust-resistant line as unspecified black metal. Treat LIANTRAL’s anti-rust line as paint.

Common questions

What is the difference between galvanised before welding and hot-dip after welding?
Wire galvanised before welding loses zinc where the weld burns it away. Hot-dip after welding coats the joint as well. F.H. Brundle and Mesh Direct both describe that split. None of the five amazon.co.uk listings prints either phrase, or BS EN 10223-4.
Does PVC replace galvanising or sit on top of it?
On specified trade panels it sits on top, when the seller says the core is galvanised. Suregreen describes galvanising before welding, then plastic. Flexipanel says PVC and does not say galvanised. Take the plastic as stated. Do not invent the zinc.
What should you do to a cut end?
Seal it. Suregreen tells buyers to paint cut ends because the cut is bare steel. That applies when you crop a sheet, including a Flexipanel panel trimmed to a gap. A no-dig border you do not cut still has its factory ends. A cut you make with pliers is the spot that rusts first.
Is a black powder coat the same as PVC?
Powder coat is a baked finish. PVC is a plastic skin. Thealyn names black powder coat on 4 mm wire. Flexipanel names PVC, and reviews call that sheet green. Kingido and Koknows say rust-resistant or rustproof and do not name either process. Black is a colour.
Why might a rustproof panel show rust in weeks?
Because the word is not a process. One Koknows review reports rust at about 14 days on a listing that says rustproof and does not name galvanising, powder coat or PVC. That is one buyer. It is enough to stop you reading the adjective as a guarantee. Thealyn’s named powder coat is a clearer sentence, and it is still not a hot-dip claim.
When is grey galvanised the better specification?
When you can buy a sheet that says galvanised after welding, with the hole and the wire on the same line. Wire Fence’s example is £40.99 for 90 cm by 1.8 m, 50 mm and 3 mm, at that shop’s price. Use that route for a posted bay. Use a powder-coated border when the job is a bed and the zinc sentence is absent.
Do any of these amazon listings state hot-dip after welding?
No. Thealyn states powder coat. Flexipanel states PVC. LIANTRAL states baking paint and an anti-rust coating. Koknows states rustproof. Kingido states rust-resistant. Hot-dip after welding appears on trade ranges such as Mastermesh, not on these five ASINs. Read the finish line as those words, not as zinc you have inferred from a black photograph.
