Start with the leaf, not the star rating
Weigh the gate and measure the width before you read heavy duty. A 14 inch coil can still print no kilogram figure: the Weielt at about £12.99, the Zymuegist at about £12.39, and the scottchen PRO at about £25.99.
A hydraulic unit prints a range. Lockey’s GCTB175, about £78, is no heavier than 50 kg and, on the maker’s sheet, no wider than 1.0 m. The amazon field does not print that width. WUDLEP’s TB200 at about £59.99 prints 40–64 inches and 50–145 lb. That is not Lockey’s heavier GC family.
Hinge layout is the measurement people skip. Lockey’s closer is for flush butt or T hinges, with the hinge centre no more than 6 mm from the post face. Offset hinges are outside that sheet. If the leaf sits back from the post, the hydraulic gate closer vs spring page will not make the GCTB175 fit.
Three mechanisms, and what each one refuses to do
A coil pulls harder as you open the gate and has no damper. The Weielt, the Zymuegist and the scottchen PRO stop a light wooden gate being left open. They do not stop a slam.
The Burg-Wächter 271 at about £11.95 is a surface spring arm ranked in Door Closers, not a fire-door closer. BS EN 1154 leaves out springs that do not check the close.
Only two listings damp the close. The Lockey prints 50 kg, 90 degrees and separate travel and latch speeds, and it is not fire rated. UK reviews, 4.2 from 187, include pistons that lost force. The WUDLEP has 5.0 from two ratings and no review text.
Self-closing hinges force a rehang. The SHF-90L at about £16.39 prints 14 kg. The CoilKlik at about £72.38 prints about 84 kg, and the one UK text is a break within 48 hours. Those hinges are on self closing gate hinges.
Opening angle, a stop, and rules that are not a house-gate law
Hydraulic units in this set are limited to about 90 degrees. Lockey says a missing stop invalidates the GCTB175 warranty. The closer mounts on the opening side and pushes the leaf shut. WUDLEP’s listing also wants a stop so the leaf stays at 90 degrees or less.
No source here creates a duty to self-close a private house gate. Faulty goods sit under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. RoSPA recommends a self-closer on play areas, ideally not quicker than five seconds. That is guidance, not a certificate for these listings. A side gate by the bins is not that path.
What the prices on this shelf are paying for
Entry price here is about £12 to £16: a spring or a light hinge pair and, on the Weielt, hundreds of UK reviews rather than a damper. The scottchen PRO at about £25.99 is still a coil. Higher shelf is WUDLEP about £59.99, CoilKlik about £72.38 and Lockey about £78. The jump buys a damper or an adjustable hinge.

Common questions
What should I measure before I buy a garden gate closer?
Weigh the leaf and measure the width, then see whether the gate face is flush with the post. Lockey’s GCTB175 is 50 kg and 1.0 m on the maker’s sheet, and the hinge centre must be no more than 6 mm from the post face. A 14 inch spring that prints no kilograms does not become suitable because the title says heavy duty.
Will a hydraulic closer work on offset hinges?
The GCTB175 will not. Lockey limits that model to flush butt or T hinges. The heavier Lockey GC range is a different product, and it is not the WUDLEP TB200 in this comparison. If you cannot match the hinge layout, do not pack the closer out.
Does my house gate have to be self-closing?
Nothing in these sources creates that duty for a private house gate. RoSPA’s five-second guidance is for play areas. GOV.UK’s note on self-closing gates is for land managers on public access, with BS 5709 in view. An open side gate and a dog are a household problem, not a statute on this page.
Is a door closer the same thing?

What if the gate is heavier than 50 kg?
The GCTB175 is the wrong row. Do not borrow Lockey’s 50–150 kg family sheet for the WUDLEP ASIN. A public path, a school gate, or a leaf you cannot match to any printed limit is a fitter’s job, not a longer screw.
