Metal or wood plug-in fence

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing what will sit in UK soil for a low border: coated metal panels, or a 30 cm wooden insert. A metal or wood plug-in fence question is that trade-off. Anti-rust and wooden fence sound like a standard or a treated use class. On the three amazon.co.uk listings in this set, neither label is printed. The [plug-in fence comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/plug-in-fence) is Koknows, WELDUN and JonesHouseDeco, read on 19 October 2026. This page keeps steel lawn-edging strips and railway sleepers out of the choice. Dogs, if that is the job, stay on their own page.

What anti-rust means on these pages

Both metal listings claim a black anti-rust coating and name no British Standard, galvanising process or powder-coat specification. Koknows is iron, 14.6 kg, titled at 102 cm by 7 m with a gate and a 5.5 cm gap, at about £174.92. Some reviews describe shorter pieces, and the stake count is not printed. WELDUN is 2.87 kg, 10 panels and 11 rods, at about £24.99, with 61 cm, 41 cm and 0.31 m printed. A coating claim does not set the height. Decorative fences sit outside BS 1722 on the series foreword. The height checks are on the plug-in fence buying guide.

What the wooden listing does not say

JonesHouseDeco is dark brown wood, 120 cm by 30 cm and 1.35 cm thick, at about £25.99. No species and no preservative are stated, and stakes, weatherproofing and paint are unanswered. JASA, on 4 July 2026, reported rot after about a year in soil and judged it untreated. That is one review, not a life for every roll. Other reviewers describe pieces that snap. The rank is garden edging, a different object from the 14.6 kg Koknows run.

Soil contact is a different product from a lawn strip

East Coast Fencing separates pressure treatment from ground contact and points to Use Class 4. That class is not printed on JonesHouseDeco, so you cannot assign it. Green Gaffer's guide is about untreated timber failing at the soil line on log roll and boards, not on this 1.35 cm picket. A Timber Development UK note of a WPA-BRE stake trial found most untreated posts failed inside five years. That is about posts, not a forecast for this roll. Steel strip and sleepers are neighbouring products.

Choose by the job, not by a year count

Choose the wooden insert for a 30 cm bed if no stated preservative is acceptable, and if you will tap it into soft soil. Choose metal panels only when the listing gives one height. Here that opening is Koknows at 102 cm on the title and the first bullet, with mixed reviews and no stake count. WELDUN's lower price is not the metal choice while three heights are printed. Do not borrow a 15-year life from another brand. There is no lab test. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Will the black coating stop rust?
The listings claim a black anti-rust coating and cite no standard, no galvanising process and no powder-coat specification. Koknows and WELDUN use the same style of claim and are different products: 14.6 kg and a 102 cm title on one side, 2.87 kg and three printed heights on the other. Decorative fences sit outside BS 1722 on the series foreword. Treat the coating as the seller's words until you see the panel in your soil.
Is the wooden border treated for soil?
The JonesHouseDeco listing does not say. There is no species, no preservative and no use class. One reviewer, JASA, reported rot after about a year in soil and judged the wood untreated for ground contact. Use Class 4 is discussed on other edging pages. It is not printed here, so you cannot claim this roll meets it. Stakes are not confirmed in the box either.
What failed in the wooden reviews?
Reviewers describe thin pieces that snap, and a face strip that arrived damaged. Grahame Cook said it breaks if you hammer too hard, so that review's workable ground is soft soil. The piece is 1.35 cm thick, 30 cm by 120 cm. Rot after about a year is one report, not a timer for every pack. Assembly required is No, which does not match the tapping the reviews describe.
Are Koknows and WELDUN the same metal product?
No. Koknows is iron, 14.6 kg, about £174.92, titled at 102 cm by 7 m with a gate and a 5.5 cm gap. The stake count is not printed, and some reviews describe shorter pieces. WELDUN is about £24.99, 2.87 kg, 10 panels and 11 rods, with heights of 61 cm, 41 cm and 0.31 m. Both claim a black coating without a named standard.
Is a lawn-edging strip this comparison?
No. Steel strip, log roll and sleepers use different parts, and their lifespan claims belong to those products. This page is coated metal panels against the 30 cm JonesHouseDeco insert. A warning that untreated timber fails at the soil line is not a test of this roll, and a 15-year or 25-year brand line does not transfer.
Which page names a product for my job?
The best plug-in fence page matches the 30 cm wood, the disputed-height metal border and the gated run, and it says who should skip each one. This page only separates the materials. The buying guide holds the order of checks. The install page has the mallet, the small hammer and the reason a hard blow splits the wood.
