Wire mesh fence for dogs and rabbits in the garden

Updated: October 2026

You are fencing one thing, and the title on the roll names five. A vegetable bed, a puppy at a hedge gap, a rabbit and a hen run do not share a hole or a height. A wire mesh fence for dogs and rabbits is not one product. A roll about 40 cm high is a guard for the bed, not the run. This page sorts those jobs against the listings in the set. The [wire mesh fence comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/wire-mesh-fence) is the table. Peter F. updated this in October 2026. We did not watch an animal against these rolls. A bed, a gate, or a tree, not a boundary

For a low guard, light hex or a short plastic roll is the honest buy. TOYPOPOR is 0.6 mm hex, about 0.41 m high, and reviews use it on bulbs. UNU is 0.5 mm, 0.4 m by 16 m, holes 2.5 cm by 5 cm, about £9.99, and reviews use it on a gate and over seeds. Meanon is 40 cm plastic with an 8 mm hole, and its star line sits under a different ASIN. The RHS notes that rabbits can gnaw plastic, so a plastic bed guard may be short-term if rabbits are the pest. Forty centimetres will not stop an animal that steps over.

A dog or a puppy at a hedge gap

A dog needs a hole it cannot step through, posts, and a bottom edge that is fixed. Mesh shops often suggest about 50 mm and at least 2 mm for many dogs. That is advice about their mesh. Green Haven is the roll reviews describe against dogs at beds: 1 m by 10 m, stated 2 mm, 100 mm by 50 mm, about £28.99. The 100 mm side is large for a small puppy. Posts and staples are not in the box. RIFNY describes posts on 0.8 m plastic with 16 mm by 18 mm holes. Reviews still call it too light for a dog. Fix the bottom as in how to install a wire mesh fence.

Rabbits, and the mesh they can chew or step through

The RHS wants about 2.5 cm mesh, 120–140 cm high, with the bottom 30 cm sunk and the lower 15 cm turned out. Nothing in this set reaches 120–140 cm. A plant guard is as far as these rolls go. VOUNOT prints 25 mm and 1 mm, at 0.5 m, about £14.99. The hole is closer to the RHS opening than Green Haven’s 100 mm grid. The height is not. UNU’s hole is 2.5 cm by 5 cm, so one side is a 5 cm slot. A TOYPOPOR review says rabbits chew the 0.6 mm wire. Dnoifne and LITLANDSTAR name rabbits and do not print a hole. A 40 cm roll around a hutch is not a suitable environment under Animal Welfare Act 2006 section 9, which states no mesh size.

Hens in the day, and a house at night

The RSPCA splits the job. Chicken wire can make a light day enclosure. If a fox is the threat, it wants heavy welded mesh, height, a skirt, and a house that locks at night. Hex here is 0.5 mm and 0.6 mm. That is not the night barrier. VOUNOT’s notes include square holes on a chicken house: 25 mm at 0.5 m, useful on a frame you have, not a 6 ft run. Green Haven’s 100 mm by 50 mm hole is a large opening beside chicks. One RIFNY review says the plastic kit will not keep chickens in. Lock the birds in at night. A fox-proof run is outside this set.

Common questions

Can I use a 40 cm roll around a vegetable bed?
Yes, as a low guard. UNU, TOYPOPOR, Meanon, Dnoifne, LITLANDSTAR and shsyue are about that height. They will not stop an animal that steps over, and plastic may be gnawed if rabbits are the pest. Check the hole. UNU’s is 2.5 cm by 5 cm.
What hole stops a rabbit in this set?
The RHS figure is about 2.5 cm, on a fence 120–140 cm high with a buried turn-out. VOUNOT’s 25 mm is the closest printed welded hole, at only 0.5 m high. Green Haven’s 100 mm by 50 mm is too open. TOYPOPOR is about 1 inch and has a chew review.
Will any of these rolls close a hedge gap for a puppy?
Green Haven is the one UK reviews describe for dogs at beds and gates, and its 100 mm hole is large for a small puppy. RIFNY has 16 mm by 18 mm holes and posts in the description, and reviews call it light. Fix the bottom edge. A floating roll is a gap under the mesh.
Is chicken wire enough for hens if a fox visits?
No. The RSPCA says chicken wire will not reliably keep foxes out and points to welded mesh, height and a skirt, with the house locked at night. UNU and TOYPOPOR are light hex at 0.5 mm and 0.6 mm. Do not use them as the only night barrier.
Which box includes posts for a temporary dog line?
RIFNY, about £36.99, 0.8 m by 15 m, with posts and 52 ties described. A post count is not printed. The other boxes are mesh or mesh and ties. Green Haven expects you to buy staples. Reviews call the RIFNY mesh too light for a dog.
Is plastic mesh a rabbit fence?
It can be a short guard. Meanon prints 8 mm and is 40 cm high. The RHS says rabbits may gnaw plastic. Dnoifne does not print a hole, and a kitten climbed it. A plastic roll is not the 120–140 cm buried fence.
What should I do if the job is a fox-proof run?
Stop buying these rolls as the barrier. Use the RSPCA combination of welded mesh, height, a skirt or a bury, and a locked house, or ask a fencer. None of the eleven listings is sold as that finished run. A 40 cm roll will not become one.
