Solar electric fence energiser for sheep

Updated: October 2026

The listing says sheep, and you are about to trust a small solar box on wool. A solar electric fence energiser for sheep only works if the pulse can get through the fleece. In this amazon.co.uk set, checked on 19 October 2026, most units state about 0.2–0.25 J. UK sheep guides start far higher. This page does not teach the full earth procedure. The rows are on the [solar electric fence energiser comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/solar-electric-fence-energiser). Peter F. checked those listings that day. Why sheep need more energy than horses

A horse on a bare nose feels a modest pulse and remembers the tape. A sheep in wool is wearing insulation, so the shock has to reach the nose or a bare leg. That is why a fence which holds cobs can fail the same week on ewes. Electric Fence Online puts a typical sheep energiser at about 3–5 J, and at 5 J and above for a long, weedy or heavily stocked line. Compel’s starting point for sheep in wool is 4 J and up, against 1–2 J for a few clean horse paddocks. Those bands sit well above a quarter of a joule. Voltimum’s summary still caps a compliant unit at 5.0 J into the 500 ohm load, and one energiser on the fence, so two solar lids on one net are not the repair. None of these listings prints BS EN IEC 60335-2-76.

What these solar units actually state

My Animal Command’s MAC3ML, about £139.99, states 0.25 J output and 0.55 J stored, and the title lists sheep. Across 433 reviews it sits at 4.4. One verified review says the sheep walked through. The best solar electric fence energiser page keeps that unit as a clean horse-tape pick. JKLESA, Mekturm and Trsaow’s SDWL2 also sit at about 0.2–0.25 J while some titles name sheep. ATMOREA does not state joules at all. None of those files contains a UK review that says a flock stayed in. Trsaow’s SUNDWL prints 1.2 J and does not say stored or output. Even as a generous reading, 1.2 J is under the 3–5 J band. The solar electric fence energiser buying guide is why a 5 km title does not change the joules.

A bigger panel is not more joules

A 6 W lid does not fix a weak shock. My Animal Command and JKLESA print 6 W. ATMOREA and Trsaow’s SDWL2 print 3 W. Mekturm does not state watts. A larger panel keeps the same pulse after a run of cloud. It does not retune 0.25 J to 4 J. Hotline’s Fire Drake, at £410 with a 12 W panel, is still sold at 0.25 J or 0.50 J output. The light can flash and the ewes still push through, because a full 0.25 J battery still delivers 0.25 J. The supply choice, including a 12 V leisure battery, is the solar fence energiser vs battery page. You cannot earth your way from 0.25 J up to 4 J.

When you leave this category

Leave this set for sheep in wool or sheep on a weedy net. Use a mains energiser when a socket is near the fence, or a 12 V energiser on a leisure battery in the 3–5 J area. This comparison does not contain that ASIN. Do not invent one from a 1.2 J bullet. A small solar unit can still suit a garden, a poultry net, or a short clean horse tape. Lambs in a tiny, bare, well-watched pen are closer to the small animals in that one review than a full-wooled flock. Even then, watch them. If the label says 0.2 J or 0.25 J, it is not the sheep energiser the title is selling you.

Common questions

Why do sheep ignore a fence that horses respect?
Wool insulates. A horse feels a pulse on bare skin more readily than a sheep feels it through a fleece. Electric Fence Online therefore starts sheep nearer 3–5 J, while a short clean horse fence is discussed from about 1 J. A 0.25 J solar unit can match a horse review and still be the fence the sheep walk through.
Is 0.2 J or 0.25 J enough for sheep?
The UK guides say no for sheep in wool. Compel starts at 4 J and up. Electric Fence Online cites about 3–5 J, and more for a long, weedy or heavily stocked line. One verified amazon.co.uk review of the 0.25 J My Animal Command unit says the sheep walked through. That is one review, and it sits with the guides rather than against them.
The title says sheep. Is that enough?
No. My Animal Command, JKLESA and Mekturm all name sheep while stating about 0.2–0.25 J. The word is the seller’s audience list. The output figure is what you compare with the 3–5 J band. ATMOREA does not state joules, so a sheep claim there is even less to go on.
Will a bigger solar panel fix it?
No. A 6 W or 12 W panel keeps the battery charged. It does not raise a 0.25 J output into the sheep band. The Fire Drake example at £410 still offers 0.25 J or 0.50 J output beside its 12 W panel. You would be paying for runtime, not for wool-level energy.
Is 1.2 J on one listing enough for wool?
Trsaow’s SUNDWL bullet says 1.2 J and does not say stored or output. It has two reviews, neither about sheep. Even as a generous reading, 1.2 J is below 3–5 J. Gallagher’s S120li labels 1.2 J as stored energy and is not in this set. Do not treat 1.2 J as a sheep specification.
What should I buy instead if I only have sheep?
A mains energiser if you have a socket, or a 12 V energiser on a leisure battery if you will maintain it, in the region of 3–5 J. This solar set does not include that product. Heavy vegetation is the same reason to leave compact solar, even before wool is the issue.
Do I still need several low wires?
Sheep meet a fence with the nose, so low live wires are normal sheep-net design. These listings do not state wire heights, so do not take a height from them. Extra wires do not add joules. They give the pulse more chances to leak if the grass is long. Get the output into the guide band first.
