Solar electric fence energiser buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are standing in a paddock with no 230 V socket, and the listing promises 5 km, 10 km or 10 miles. A solar electric fence energiser buying guide starts with the output joules the animal will feel, then the panel, then what is in the box. On 19 October 2026 the six units in our [solar electric fence energiser comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/solar-electric-fence-energiser) run from about £51.36 to about £139.99. This page is the order of those checks. Peter F. checked the amazon.co.uk listings that day. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Output joules, not the kilometres on the title

A joule is the energy in each pulse, not the length on the box. Electric Fence Online asks you to compare output joules, because stored energy is the larger number before the pulse is sent. My Animal Command’s MAC3ML is the only listing here that prints both: 0.25 J output and 0.55 J stored, at about £139.99. Reading only 0.55 J makes the fence look more than twice as strong as the output. Trsaow’s SUNDWL bullet says 1.2 J at about £109.99 and does not say stored or output. Gallagher’s S120li, outside this set, labels 1.2 J as stored energy. JKLESA prints 0.25 J in the bullets and 0.2 J in the highlight. Averaging those two invents a third number. ATMOREA never states joules. Grass on the wire leaks the pulse, so a 5 km title shrinks before you reach it.

Match the joules to the animal and the grass

Compel’s starting table runs under 1 J for a garden or a poultry net, 1–2 J for a few clean horse paddocks, 2–4 J for cattle once grass touches the wires, and 4 J and up for sheep in wool or heavy growth. Electric Fence Online puts a typical sheep energiser at about 3–5 J, and a shorter horse fence nearer 1 J. Most of this amazon set sits under 1 J. Reviews on My Animal Command describe horses and a cob on the tape, and one verified review says the sheep walked through. The word on the title is the seller’s audience, not a measurement. If you keep sheep, read the solar electric fence energiser for sheep page before you trust a listing that names them.

Panel watts and a mains top-up

This set prints 6 W on My Animal Command and JKLESA, and 3 W on ATMOREA’s title and on Trsaow’s SDWL2. Mekturm does not state watts. Farmcare describes a panel as covering three seasons, with the darkest months still needing a mains boost. A larger panel does not turn 0.25 J into 3 J. Hotline’s Fire Drake, at £410 with a 12 W panel, is still 0.25 J or 0.50 J output. Only My Animal Command and JKLESA name a UK plug. The other four mention an adapter and do not state the plug type. How that sits against a 12 V unit is the solar fence energiser vs battery page.

What has to be in the box

The pulse returns through the soil. My Animal Command includes a 50 cm earth rod and a basic tester. JKLESA’s bullets name a rod, and one of ten reviews says no grounding pin was supplied. Mekturm, ATMOREA and both Trsaow listings do not name an earth stake. AHDB’s rule of thumb is about 30–40 cm of 16 mm rod per joule, and an earth reading above about 200 V means you add stakes, at least 10 m from the building earth. The 50 cm rod is what one listing supplies, not a legal minimum. A warning sign is listed for Mekturm and ATMOREA. Connecting the rod and the first charge is the how to set up a solar electric fence energiser page.

Common questions

How many joules do I need for horses on a clean tape?
Electric Fence Online’s horse guide starts nearer 1 J for a shorter horse fence, and more if the line is long or weedy. Compel’s band for a few clean horse paddocks is 1–2 J. My Animal Command’s UK reviews describe horses and a cob staying on the tape. That is a short, clear line in those reviews, and it sits below the guide’s starting point.
Why do two joule numbers appear on one listing?
Stored energy is larger than the energy that leaves the unit. My Animal Command prints 0.25 J output and 0.55 J stored, so you can see the difference. JKLESA prints 0.25 J and 0.2 J in different places on the same listing, which is a conflict, not a stored-and-output pair. Trsaow’s 1.2 J bullet does not say which kind of joule it is.
Is a 5 km title the length I can fence?
No. Five kilometres, 10 km and 10 miles on these listings are title claims for a clean wire. Grass on the line leaks the pulse, and the animal still has to feel what is left. Use the output joules and the vegetation, then check the fence with a tester, rather than planning the field from the title.
Does the box include a UK plug and an earth rod?
My Animal Command includes both: a 12 V / 2 A UK plug and a 50 cm earth rod. JKLESA names a UK plug and an earth rod in the bullets, and one review says the pin was missing. Mekturm, ATMOREA and both Trsaow listings do not name an earth rod. Several of them include an adapter without stating that it is a UK 13 A plug.
When is a mains or 12 V unit the better buy?
Buy a mains energiser when a socket is near the fence. Buy a 12 V unit on a leisure battery when someone will swap or charge that battery, especially once grass is on the wires or you need the sheep band of about 3–5 J. A solar all-in-one in this set suits a remote, clean, low-joule line, and you still plan a winter top-up where the listing includes an adapter.
What is the legal ceiling on pulse energy?
Voltimum’s summary of the relevant standard family is at most one pulse a second, at most 10 ms long, and at most 5.0 J discharged into the 500 ohm test load, with only one energiser on a fence. That is a ceiling, not a target these listings claim to meet. None of the six prints BS EN IEC 60335-2-76.
