Common questions about forestry tools

What forestry tools are compared here?
This hub compares three amazon.co.uk sets. One covers nine splitting wedges, including straight, diamond, grenade and twist profiles, with source-file prices from £6.12 to £24.91. The other two cover chainsaw chains: 12 listings for small Stihl saws, and nine tallox packs. A wedge opens a bucked log along the grain. A chain is a separate cutting job, matched to the bar rather than to the wedge.
How should you choose a splitting wedge?
Choose a straight taper for one split along the grain, a grenade or diamond profile when you want a point that stands on the end grain, and a twist for larger or stringier rounds. A grenade shape does not guarantee four quarters: UK review evidence in this set often describes a two-way split. Profile, mass and the striking tool named on the listing matter more than decorative claims.
What should you strike a splitting wedge with?
Use the striker named by the product listing, commonly a sledgehammer or splitting maul. Reviews also mention club and lump hammers for seating some wedges. Do not strike a steel wedge with an axe edge, and stop if people are in the swing path or the log cannot be controlled.
How do you match a chainsaw chain to your saw?
Match the pitch, gauge and drive-link count printed on the guide bar or the old chain. The saw name and the nominal bar length are not enough, because one saw family can appear with more than one specification. That applies to the Stihl listings and the tallox packs. Count the drive links and read the bar stamp before you order, even when your model appears in a title.
Are 3/8 inch and 3/8 inch P chains interchangeable?
No. Treat 3/8 inch P, or low-profile, and standard 3/8 inch as distinct specifications. Stihl lists Picco chains for 3/8 inch P separately, and the tallox listings also use 3/8 LP wording. Do not fit a chain only because both listings contain the number 3/8, and do not infer a match from a rounded decimal field. The gauge and the drive-link count still have to match.
Should a steel splitting wedge go in a chainsaw kerf?
No. Keep a steel splitting wedge out of a chainsaw kerf. The wedge comparison is for opening a bucked log with a struck tool. The chain comparisons are for choosing a loop that matches the bar. The two jobs stay separate, even when you are working on the same felled tree.
Does easy splitting prove that firewood is dry?
No. How readily a log splits depends on species, grain, knots and the tool as well as moisture. In England, domestic firewood sold in quantities under 2 cubic metres must meet the Ready to Burn rule of 20% moisture or less, but splitting behaviour is not a moisture measurement.
