One handed chainsaw buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are in a UK garden with a Leylandii stem or a fruit-tree limb to take out, and amazon.co.uk is showing a pistol-grip saw whose title says one-handed. The watt figure looks like a test. This one handed chainsaw buying guide stays on the checks that change the basket: the guide bar, how many batteries are in the box, and whether an oil system is named. A safety lock does not make a one-handed stretch a method. The [one-handed chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/one-handed-chainsaw) is the table. Peter F. used those listing fields and HSE guidance, and did not lab-test the saws. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

On amazon.co.uk a one-handed chainsaw is almost always a cordless mini saw: a short bar, a pistol grip, and a lithium pack. In forestry guidance those words mean a top-handled saw for trained work off the ground. HSE AFAG308 says use a rear-handled saw on the ground. INDG317 expects a certificate for work on or in a tree unless you are supervised. A 6 inch kit is neither machine. ISO 11681-2 and IEC 62841-4-1 describe chain saws held with both hands, so the title is not a UK approval. Stihl UK lists the GTA 26 tool-only at £119 including VAT, and it is not in this set. Look at the box, not the watt line.

Bar, batteries, and oil

A 6 inch bar is the usual length. Hyundai's HY20CCS150, a different saw, is described as about 100–120 mm of branch. That is one model's figure, not a measured limit of these kits. The Seesii M8 Boost, about £59.99, ships an 8 inch bar fitted and a 6 inch bar and chain as well. Two packs let you swap. Angseen's SY-LT05 is the single 2,000 mAh listing, about £35.14. Two-pack rows run from 2,000 mAh to 4,000 mAh. A minute bullet is a claim, not a timed test. Manual and automatic oilers both need bar-and-chain oil, and the CH700R bottle arrives empty. If the listing never names an oil system, pick another row. The first-cut order is on how to use a mini chainsaw.

Weight, voltage, and the safety lock

The bullet weight is an in-hand claim. The item weight is often the parcel. Rivlox prints 1.1 kg in a bullet and 1.93 kg as item weight. Quote the bullet. A light saw is still not a one-handed method at arm's length. An auxiliary handle, on the CH700R and the brushed Supstable, is the second grip. 21 V is a marketing maximum. Stihl UK rates the GTA 26 at 11 V, maximum 12 V. Watt lines on the CH700R disagree, at 900 and 1,000. The lock stops a pocket start. It does not make a stretched reach a method.

When not to buy one

Do not buy a 6 inch kit for paid tree work. INDG317 requires a certificate for work on or in a tree unless you are supervised. PUWER does not cover domestic work in a private household. The same cut, done as a job, is work. Felling, a hung-up stem, a crown, and anything over a road or a power line are outside this class. HSE estate guidance says not to use a chainsaw from a ladder. Shelf prices, which move, sit near £28–£40, £50–£60, and £95–£115. Only the Newbeny has a pole in the box. If loppers might finish the job, read mini chainsaw vs pruning saw before you pay.

Common questions

Is a 6 inch bar enough for garden branches?
For green wood you can span from the ground, yes, around the 100–120 mm scale Hyundai prints for its own 6 inch saw. That figure is not a test of these amazon.co.uk kits. A review of a thicker log is one cut, not a plan. The Seesii M8 Boost adds an 8 inch bar beside a 6 inch bar. Neither length is a felling bar, and neither is a timed result.
Should I pay for two batteries?
Pay for two if the job is more than one shrub. Angseen's SY-LT05 is the single 2,000 mAh listing, with three chains and no second pack, so you stop when that pack is flat. Two-pack rows run from 2,000 mAh to 4,000 mAh. A minute claim in a bullet is not a timed test. Buy the milliamp-hours printed on the page. A longer bar spends a larger pack faster.
Do I still need oil if the oiler is automatic?
Yes. An automatic claim only meters oil you have put in the tank, and several bottles in this set arrive empty, including the Seesii CH700R. A press oiler, on that saw and the Bluebow, moves oil when you press. Dry running damages the bar and the chain. If the listing never names a bottle, as on the Angseen SY-LT05 bullets, do not assume there is a tank.
Why do the two weights disagree?
The bullet is usually an in-hand claim and the item weight is often the carton. Rivlox is 1.1 kg in a bullet and 1.93 kg as item weight. Use the bullet for feel, and ignore a figure that cannot match the box, such as SINPY's 500 g beside a 40 cm carton. Neither number means you should cut one-handed at full stretch.
Is 21 V more powerful than an 11 V pruner?
No. 21 V on these packs is a printed maximum, not a test against Stihl's GTA 26, which Stihl UK rates at 11 V, maximum 12 V. Compare the bar, the milliamp-hours, and whether a second pack is in the box. Do not copy a branded saw's noise figure onto these kits, and do not treat a watt bullet as measured power.
When should I leave this class of saw?
Leave it for felling, a hung-up stem, crown work, anything over a road or a power line, and any paid job on or in a tree. Those need a rear-handled saw and, if it is work, the competence INDG317 describes. Also leave it when a pruning saw would finish a few cuts. The safety lock does not make one-handed reaching a method, and it does not replace a second hand on the saw.
