Mini chainsaw vs pruning saw

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are looking at a shrub that has thickened, with loppers in one hand and a chainsaw in the basket. Mini chainsaw vs pruning saw is the decision before either tool leaves the shed. Loppers cover woody stems up to about 3 cm. A pruning saw takes you through about 5 cm. A cordless mini chainsaw earns its place when that green wood comes back often enough that a hand saw is slow, and you can still reach it from the ground. The [one-handed chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/one-handed-chainsaw) is the table if you do buy a chain. Peter F. used amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources, and did not lab-test either tool. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Where loppers and a pruning saw stop

The RHS, writing about overgrown climbers, puts loppers on woody stems up to 3 cm and a pruning saw on anything thicker. Gardeners' World uses about 3 cm for loppers and about 5 cm for pruning saws. Those figures are guidance, not a law, and not a measured limit of every 6 inch bar. The RHS tree guide also points branches under about 2.5 cm at secateurs or loppers. A rose stem and a lot of shrub wood never need a motor. Gardeners' World calls the pruning saw the last hand tool before a chainsaw, for branches about 5 cm and above. A hand saw is already one-handed by design. One handed on a mini-saw title is not a new ability. You add a chain for speed on repeated stems, not for the grip. Past about 5 cm a sharp pruning saw still works, and it works slowly. If you are tired of it on the third branch, price a mini saw. If you are tired of it on the only branch this year, finish with the hand saw. Gardeners' World also says not to prune from a ladder. Height is not a reason to change tool.

What a mini chainsaw adds

Gardeners' World calls the mini saw a bridge between loppers and a full-size chainsaw. It is for repeated green wood that is slow by hand and still too small for a rear-handled saw. In this set that is usually a 6 inch cordless bar. Reviewers describe apple, privet, Leylandii, and small sycamore from the ground, and they also describe chains that slacken. The gain is minutes on the tenth stem, not a kinder wound on the first. Picture twenty green stems between about 3 cm and 8 cm, all reachable from the lawn. Loppers stall on the upper half. A pruning saw will finish them after the light has gone. An oiled 6 inch chain gets through that pile, which is what reviewers mean when one pack lasts a pruning session. The two-pack kits in this set are built for that longer sitting. Neither replaces a bow saw on a limb the size of your leg. A sharp pruning saw, with an undercut so the bark does not tear, is still the careful tool at the branch collar. The RHS sequence is an undercut, an overcut further out, then the stub just outside the collar, not flush. A mini chain can follow that geometry if you are patient. It can also rag the bark if the chain is dull or slack. This comparison does not claim the chain is as kind to live wood as a sharp pruning saw. One prized apple limb stays with the hand saw.

What it costs you

The hand saw has no tank. In this set the bottle often arrives empty, so you buy bar-and-chain oil and keep buying it. Reviewers then meet a chain that works loose. One SINPY review describes a chain that came off and broke the front guard. That is a different afternoon from a saw that folds into a pocket. You also add noise. Gardeners' World notes that electric saws can still be around 90 dB. The 75–77 dB(A) figures for the Stihl GTA 26 are not measurements of these kits. Eye protection, hearing protection, and sturdy shoes are the home baseline. Gloves in the box are not documented here as BS EN 381. Entry kits run about £28–£40, and the better-supported 6 inch kits about £50–£60. A pruning saw costs less than the cheap end, and it does not throw a chain. The Rivlox at about £28.48 is 3.8 from 9 reviews, with failures in that small file. A folding saw is the better buy for a few cuts. If you will not wear goggles for a ten-minute job, you have answered the question. Who each powered row is for, if you still want one, is on best mini chainsaw UK.

Which to use

Use loppers up to about 3 cm. Use a pruning saw from there through about 5 cm, and for any thicker branch you will cut only once or twice. Buy a mini chainsaw when the same green stem repeats, you can reach every cut with both feet on the ground, and you will oil the chain and keep a second hand on the saw. The condition is repetition. One overlooked apple limb is a pruning saw. Twenty hedge stems on a Saturday are a 6 inch cordless saw, once you have accepted the oil and the slack chain. Do not buy the chain because the title says one-handed. You can already cut one-handed with a pruning saw, and the powered saw is safer with two. Do not buy it for a ladder, and do not buy it to fell. When the wood hangs over a road or a cable, neither tool is the answer. If you do choose the mini saw, use the one-handed chainsaw buying guide for the box, not the watt number.

Common questions

What thickness is still a lopper job?
Woody stems up to about 3 cm, the band the RHS uses for loppers on climbers and Gardeners' World uses for loppers in general. Under about 2.5 cm, the RHS tree guide points at secateurs or loppers. Those are guides, not a law, and a blunt blade stalls sooner. If the loppers bite cleanly, you do not need a saw yet. Forcing them into harder wood crushes the stem.
When is a pruning saw enough?
From the point loppers stop, through about 5 cm, and for thicker wood when you only have a few cuts you can support. Gardeners' World calls it the last hand tool before a chainsaw. It is already one-handed. Use it for one careful limb, including live wood where you want an undercut and a clean collar. It is the slow tool only when that same cut repeats all afternoon, still from the ground.
When does a mini chainsaw start to make sense?
When many green stems are slow with a pruning saw, and every one is reachable with both feet on the ground. A hedge of stems between about 3 cm and 8 cm is the afternoon reviewers describe with apple, privet, and Leylandii. You then take on oil, tension, noise, and a chain that can come off. A single branch on a prized tree does not meet that test. Neither does anything you would have to climb for.
Is a pruning saw safer because it has no motor?
It stops when you stop pushing, and it cannot throw a chain or kick at a bar tip. You can still cut yourself, and a slip on a ladder is still a fall, so the ladder rule is the same. The mini saw adds a moving chain. That is why a few cuts should stay with the hand saw. It is not a reason to skip eye protection under a dusty shrub with either tool.
Will a mini chainsaw make a cleaner cut?
Not by itself. A sharp pruning saw with an undercut is the careful cut at the collar. A chain can follow the same idea if it is sharp and tight, and it can rag the bark if it is dull or slack. This page does not claim the powered cut is kinder to live wood. Use the hand saw when the wound matters more than the time. Use the chain when you are clearing many similar stems.
Can I prune a live branch with a chain?
You can, from the ground, if you undercut so the bark does not strip. The RHS sequence was drawn for a hand saw, and the geometry does not change because the teeth are powered. Live wood pinches a bar if you cut from the top only. For one important limb, a pruning saw behaves better. For a thicket you are removing anyway, an oiled chain is reasonable. If the branch is above your head, stay off the ladder and call someone.
