How to use a mini chainsaw

Updated: 22 October 2026

The saw is on the kitchen floor, the bottle in the box is empty, and the chain hangs slack under the bar. That is the usual start with these cordless kits, and it is how a first session throws a chain or runs it dry. How to use a mini chainsaw here is a short order: battery out, oil in, chain snug, then both hands at about waist height. You are not learning to fell. The [one-handed chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/one-handed-chainsaw) is the table of the kits. Peter F. used those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources, and did not lab-test a cut. Before the battery goes in

Leave the pack out before you touch the chain. Several bottles in this set arrive empty, including the Seesii CH700R. The brushless Supstable lists an empty bottle next to an automatic-oiler claim. The Yard Force LS F12 manual, for a different mini saw, says a dry run damages the bar and the chain. Assume this bottle is dry until you have looked. Use bar-and-chain oil, not a household spray. A press oiler, as on the CH700R, still needs a full tank before you press. If the page does not name an oiler, read the sheet in the box. What belongs in the box is on the one-handed chainsaw buying guide. Set the tension with the pack still out. Stihl UK's line, written for its own saws, is that the chain should be snug on the underside and still move by hand. Tool-free tension is stated only for the Seesii M8 Boost and the Newbeny head.

How to start and stand

Fit the battery when the oil is in, the chain is snug, the cover is off, and the wood cannot roll. Gardeners' World asks for goggles, ear defenders, no loose clothing, and a clear patch of ground. Try the safety button on the ground before you are reaching. Do not tape the lock down. Start with the lock, then the trigger, and have the chain at full speed before it touches wood. Keep the cut at waist height, not above the shoulders, and not on the tip of the bar, because tip contact is how kickback starts. Keep both hands on the saw. Use the auxiliary handle if the box included one. The title's one-handed line is not a method. A first cut is a green stem about as thick as a broom handle, supported so the kerf stays open. Let the chain work. Decide where the offcut will fall before you start.

After the first cuts

A chain that was snug when cold often hangs loose after a few minutes. Heat stretches it. Stop, release the trigger, and take the battery out before you touch the bar. On a press oiler, look for a wet bar. On an automatic claim, look for oil on the bar or a level that has dropped. Refit the tension so the chain is snug and still moves by hand. If you tightened the chain hot, slacken it again once it cools, or it shrinks too tight. One Bluebow review says the oil cap leaks unless the thread is taped. That is one listing, not every cap. Swap to the second pack, where the box included one. When you finish: battery out, cover on, saw somewhere dry.

When to stop

Stop if the chain has thrown and stop if a guard is cracked. One SINPY review says the chain came off on the first session and broke the front cover. Do not refit the chain and carry on until you know the guard still covers what it covered. A Rivlox review describes a drive that failed after about 20 minutes. A Newbeny review says the chain would not tension and the saw went back. If the chain will not stay on after a proper check with the battery out, retire the tool or return it. Stop when the cut is no longer at waist height in front of you. Anything you cannot reach with both feet on the ground, anything in the crown, a hung-up stem, and any branch over a road or a power line is no longer a mini-saw job. HSE says not to use a chainsaw from a ladder. Which limb, and where the ladder stops, is on mini chainsaw for pruning branches. INDG317 expects a certificate when work on or in a tree is a job. Your own hedge is not that job. The neighbour's tree, done for pay, can be. If you cannot see a clean fall, put the saw down.

Common questions

Do I have to add oil before the first cut?
Yes. Several bottles in this set are empty, and an automatic oiler does not arrive full. The Seesii CH700R included line says the bottle is empty. The Yard Force manual for another mini saw says a dry chain damages the bar. Buy bar-and-chain oil before you fit the battery. If your own sheet shows a pre-filled tank, use that oil, then top it up. Do not start because a bottle appears in the photo.
What oil goes in the tank?
Bar-and-chain oil. A Core Service mini-saw manual prefers a vegetable bar oil for pruning and says no to waste oil. A penetrating spray is not a substitute, even if a review mentions one. Empty is the pattern in this set, and sometimes the fill state is not stated at all. If the listing never names an oiler, read the sheet in the box before you pour anything in.
How tight should the chain be?
Snug along the underside of the bar, and still able to move when you pull it by hand in a glove. That is Stihl UK's general line, and these kits do not share one millimetre. Take the battery out first. Too tight and the bar heats. Too loose and the chain climbs off. Tool-free knobs are stated for the M8 Boost and the Newbeny head, not for every saw in the comparison.
Why does the chain come off after a few minutes?
Heat slackens a chain that was only just tight, and a dry bar makes that worse. Stop, battery out, check the oil, then tension again so the chain is snug and still moves. If a guard has cracked, or the chain will not stay on after that check, stop using the saw. Putting the chain back on a broken cover is how a small fault becomes a cut hand.
Can I hold it in one hand?
You can lift it in one hand. You should not cut with one hand. A second hand on the body or the auxiliary handle is the safer grip, and Gardeners' World says both hands are safer. The lock only stops a pocket start. If the lock is hard in gloves, practise it at waist height. Do not bypass it, and do not cut above your shoulders or with the tip of the bar.
When do I stop and call someone?
Call a tree surgeon for crown work, a hung-up stem, anything over a road or a power line, and any cut you cannot make with both feet on the ground. Do not take the saw up a ladder. If the work is paid and it is on or in a tree, INDG317 expects a certificate unless you are supervised in training. Also return the saw if the chain throws and breaks the guard, or the drive fails after a few minutes.
