Corded vs cordless chainsaw for a 16 inch electric saw

Updated: 22 October 2026

You can say where the timber sits, and whether a socket is within about six or twelve metres. That answer comes before any watt number. The eight listings in the [16 inch chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/16-inch-chainsaw) split into three corded saws at a stated 2400 W and five battery saws whose 1800 W or 2300 W lines are shelf labels, not mains input. This page says when the cable wins, when the pack wins, and what stays true for both. Peter F. read those listings in October 2026. When the cable is the better tool

A corded saw draws from the wall for as long as the circuit holds, which suits a pile beside the house. Hyundai states a 12 m cable. DOVAMAN states 6 m. Oregon does not print a cable length. All three list 2400 W and a 16 inch bar, from about £88.98 to about £114.42. Oregon has 1,561 ratings and Hyundai 1,037, which is why the best 16 inch electric chainsaw page puts that pair on the socket-side shortlist. If the stack is next to the garage, corded is the default. A field is not fixed by a longer lead.

When the battery is the better tool

A battery saw is for timber with no practical socket. Dong Cheng appears in UK reviews for field stacks. It needs both 20 V 4.0 Ah packs for a stated 40 V, weighs 7.94 kg, and lists an inertia brake claimed under 0.1 seconds. The second pack is not a spare. VOERJIA uses packs one after the other, at about £162.99. The about £52.99 pair is for occasional cuts. Runtime reports run from about ten cuts to about forty minutes, with no single tested figure, and weak star lines cap a winter of firewood.

Watts that do not share a meaning

Hyundai, DOVAMAN and Oregon all state 2400 W from the wall. DOVAMAN asks for circuit current above 15 A while a normal UK plug is 13 A. That note is on the DOVAMAN listing, not a rule for every corded saw. papasbox and Yelyee print 1800 W, GEARPASS about 1980 W, and VOERJIA 2300 W. Those shelf labels are not corded watts. Hyundai’s spec block prints 15 rpm, which is not DOVAMAN’s 15 m/s. Match the source to where the timber sits.

What stays true for both

Every saw here still needs oil, a tension check once the chain is warm, and a chain kept out of soil. Kickback does not vanish because there is no petrol exhaust. HSE’s workplace noise guidance uses 80, 85 and 87 dB(A) action values, and hearing protection is still sensible when no product dB figure is printed. A lock-off is not a chain brake. GEARPASS reviews dispute whether the brake works as fitted. None of these listings gives hand-arm vibration in m/s². Oil, direction, tension, and the brake check are on the how to use a 16 inch chainsaw page.

Common questions

If the logs are next to the house, why take a battery limit?
You do not have to. Continuous mains power avoids mid-session pack swaps when the pile sits within a safe lead run. Hyundai states 12 m. DOVAMAN states 6 m. Oregon does not print a cable length. A lead across wet grass is still a trip line, and a standing tree toward a building is still felling, which this set does not teach.
If the stack is in a field, why is twelve metres still not enough?
Fields rarely place the socket beside the cut, and an extension reel adds resistance and trip risk over distance. That is the battery case, with runtime left uncertain. Dong Cheng uses both packs on the tool for a stated 40 V. A 12 m Hyundai cable does not turn a field stack into a socket-side job.
Is 1800 W cordless weaker than 2400 W corded?
The labels are not comparable inputs in this set. The corded trio states 2400 W from the wall. Cordless rows print 1800 W, about 1980 W, or 2300 W as shelf labels. Match the source to the location instead of ranking watts across types. Hyundai’s 15 rpm chain-speed field is also not DOVAMAN’s 15 m/s.
What is the 15 A note on the DOVAMAN?
A bullet asks for circuit current above 15 A. A normal UK plug is rated at 13 A. The listing does not include a measured current, so treat the note as a buying constraint on that model, not a test result and not a rule for every 2400 W saw here. Oregon’s bullets also mention 15 amp. Cable length on the Oregon is still unstated.
Does two batteries mean a spare?
On Dong Cheng, both 20 V 4.0 Ah packs are required together for the stated 40 V. The second pack is not a spare you swap while you cut. On other kits a second pack may be for swapping, but you read that ASIN’s listing line rather than assuming. VOERJIA uses its packs one after the other, not both fitted at once.
Will a cordless saw kick back less?
No. Chain geometry and nose contact drive kickback. The power source does not remove it. Cut with the lower part of the bar, with two hands on the handles. A lock-off is not a chain brake. GEARPASS reviews dispute whether that brake works as fitted, which is a reason to stop, on cable or on battery.
How do the prices line up inside this set only?
Entry cordless is about £52.99. Mid corded and battery listings sit about £86 to £115. The upper cordless pair is about £150 to £163 on the saved prices. Petrol is outside this set. Those bands are shelf prices from the amazon.co.uk listings, not a promise that a lower price cuts faster.
