16 inch chainsaw buying guide for a UK garden pile

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want roughly a 16 inch bar, and the next step is not eight star averages. The [16 inch chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/16-inch-chainsaw) holds three corded saws at a stated 2400 W and five battery saws whose watt labels are not mains input. This page is the question order: where the timber sits, how much review evidence you trust, what the bar does not promise, and what must be in the box. Peter F. read those listings in October 2026. This is not a laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a 16 inch bar actually measures

A 16 inch bar is about 40 cm, or 41 cm on the Dong Cheng. That is reach, not a felling diameter. Reviewers describe rounds of about six to twelve inches that are already down. A tree that could hit the house, the road, or a fence is outside this set. HSE’s INDG317 is written for petrol saws at work and still treats kickback and training as real on a battery saw. Stove logs are the 16 inch chainsaw for firewood page.

Corded 2400 W or a battery label

Hyundai HYC2400E at about £88.98, DOVAMAN DCS01A at about £94.97, and Oregon CS1400 at about £114.42 all state 2400 W. They suit a stack by a socket. The Hyundai’s 12 m cable is the lead reviewers mention beside the house. Battery saws run from the about £52.99 pair to Dong Cheng at about £149.99 and VOERJIA at about £162.99. A cordless 1800 W or 2300 W line is a shelf label, not mains input. A field stack is still the wrong job for a 12 m cable.

Stars, counts, and mixed review pools

Oregon is 4.4 from 1,561 ratings. Hyundai is 4.3 from 1,037. DOVAMAN’s 4.4 is from nine ratings. Yelyee is 4.7 from eleven at the same about £52.99 price as papasbox at 3.8 from 62. Those are not the same evidence. VOERJIA’s 4.3 from 250 mixes 6 inch and 8 inch review texts. GEARPASS is 3.3 from eleven. Named fits, once you have chosen cable or battery, are on the best 16 inch electric chainsaw page.

Brake, oil, spare chain, and warranty

Oil is usually not in the box. Automatic means the pump runs after you fill the tank. DOVAMAN states 150 ml. VOERJIA states 170 ml. A lock-off is not a chain brake. GEARPASS reviews dispute the brake. papasbox reviews mention a snapping plastic guard. Oregon and Hyundai state three years. GEARPASS states one year. DOVAMAN includes a second chain. Dong Cheng’s included line does not. DOVAMAN asks for above 15 A on a 13 A UK plug. That note is for that listing only.

When this is no longer a garden purchase

A home log pile is not automatically work equipment. Paid cutting, or an employer’s saw, can bring the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 into view. Employer noise action values are 80, 85 and 87 dB(A). None of these listings prints a noise or vibration figure, and a 102 dB remark on Dong Cheng is an anecdote. If the goods are not as described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the route. An upright tree toward a building is trained work.

Common questions

Is a 16 inch bar the right size for garden logs?
For cross-cutting rounds already on a sawhorse, yes. Reviewers in this set routinely mention six-to-twelve-inch wood, and the bar gives reach without turning the job into felling. It does not mean you can drop a 40 cm trunk in one pass while it stands. A standing tree that could hit a house, a road, or a fence is outside this consumer set.
Should I buy corded or cordless first?
Match the power source to where the timber sits. Logs beside the house favour a corded 2400 W saw from this table. A stack with no socket favours a battery, with runtime left as a spread in reviews rather than a single tested figure. A 12 m cable does not turn a field stack into a socket-side job.
Why do two saws at £52.99 have such different review counts?
They are different listings with different samples. papasbox is 3.8 from 62 ratings. Yelyee is 4.7 from 11. The shelf price is the same, about £52.99. Price equality does not make the evidence equal, and eleven scores are not the same kind of file as a four-figure corded sample.
Does 2400 W mean it will fell a 40 cm tree?
No. Wattage and bar length describe the tool. They do not set a safe felling diameter. A 16 inch bar is about 40 cm of reach, or 41 cm on the Dong Cheng. Standing timber toward a building, a road, or a line belongs with trained work, not with this electric comparison.
What has to be in the box before the first cut?
Bar oil you buy separately on most of these lines, a chain fitted the right way, tension checked after warm-up, and a brake or lock-off you understand. Automatic oiling does not mean the tank arrives full. A lock-off only stops an accidental start. It is not a chain-brake time.
When does a garden saw become a work-equipment question?
When someone is paid to cut, or the employer provides the saw for a job, workplace rules can apply even if the saw is battery-powered. A home log pile on its own does not answer that. Your employment context does. HSE’s INDG317 is written for chainsaws at work, including competence and PPE.
Which listing quirks should I refuse to correct in my head?
Hyundai’s chain-speed field prints 15 rpm, which is not 15 m/s. Yelyee’s dimensions field prints 10 x 10 x 10 mm. DOVAMAN’s note above 15 A sits against a 13 A UK plug. VOERJIA’s star count mixes bar lengths in the review text. Keep those conflicts visible when you read the table. Do not rewrite them into a cleaner spec.
