Cordless chainsaw buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk comparing star ratings and watt numbers, yet neither tells you whether a six-inch mini can finish an apple limb in one pass or whether you need a rear-handled twelve-inch kit. The [cordless chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/cordless-chainsaw) lists twelve kits from about £27 to £163, mostly four-to-six-inch pruners and ten-to-sixteen-inch saws, plus one Bosch pole. This guide walks bar length, what is in the box, oiling and the safety words on the listing, before you pick a brand. Peter F. used the stored amazon.co.uk figures. This is not a laboratory cut. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Match the bar to the wood

HSE’s leaflet INDG317 tells you to choose the shortest guide bar that still does the job. In a UK garden that usually means a four-to-six-inch bar for reachable branches and hedge brash, and a ten-to-twelve-inch bar for one clean cut through a thicker limb. It does not mean nibbling a trunk from both sides while the nose stays buried in the kerf. The nose is the kickback zone. Stiga’s UK advice uses the same shorthand: pick a bar a little longer than the diameter you want in one pass. That is a rule of thumb, not a laboratory measurement. A six-inch bar can sometimes take a thicker stem from two sides, and you are still on a pruning tool. If the wood is routinely above six inches, look toward ten, twelve or sixteen inches, or toward petrol.

Kit, battery and the bare-tool gap

Every row in this comparison ships with at least one battery and a charger. That is not true of the wider UK market. B&Q, Stihl’s advisor and most trade shops sell DeWalt, Makita and similar bodies from roughly £140 upward without a pack, and sometimes much more for a forty-centimetre bar. Which? tests cordless saws from about £169 to £830. Those platform saws are a different purchase. Entry kits around £27–£50 are four-to-six-inch minis, often with 2.0 Ah packs. Mid kits around £60–£90 move to ten-to-twelve-inch bars. Bosch UniversalChainPole 18 at £143.98 is an eighteen-volt pole saw, not a rear-handled ground saw. VOERJIA at £162.99 is the only sixteen-inch handheld here. Makita or DeWalt batteries you already own can make a bare platform saw the cheaper long-term path. Voltage on the label is not a power ranking. Compare the bar, the battery count, and whether oiling is automatic or a manual bottle. Read reviews for stamina, not for title watts.

Oiling, tension and the safety words

Several minis ship an empty oil bottle. Bar oil is sticky and purpose-made. It is not two-stroke mix and not used engine oil. Ron Smith and other UK suppliers explain why engine oil clogs pumps and flings off the bar. Read the bullets before you trust a highlight. SEYVUM advertises auto oiling in one place and a manual easy-press oiler in another. NovorikX and VOERJIA name fixed tanks with automatic delivery. Supstable’s six-inch kit describes a manual primer bulb. A slack chain climbs off the sprocket on the first branch. That theme runs through SINPY, Rivlox, SEYVUM and Seesii reviews, which is why tension belongs with the battery out. Stihl UK’s tension advice applies even when the listing never mentions a chain brake. A lock stops an accidental start. A chain brake stops a moving chain after kickback. NovorikX and VOERJIA name a brake here. Most six-inch listings name a lock, guards and sometimes a flip guard. That is not BS EN ISO 11681-1 hardware, which targets combustion forest saws. Do not read safety lock as a brake.

A decision you can take to the comparison

Measure the wood you cut in a typical year, then pick the shortest bar that finishes those cuts from the ground. Check two batteries, oil or an empty bottle, and whether a brake is named. Ignore title watts such as 3900 W on Sukumo. They are seller claims, not a Which? cut test. Best cordless chainsaw for a UK garden assigns the rows to jobs. A full day of large timber, or batteries you already own, belongs on cordless chainsaw vs petrol. Oil and tension come after the parcel arrives.

Common questions

What bar length do I need for garden branches?
For thin brash and hedge wood, four to six inches is enough if you can reach the branch with both feet on the ground. When a limb is thicker than the bar, move up to ten to twelve inches, cut from two sides with a mini and accept the kickback risk, or use loppers. INDG317’s shortest-bar rule is the anchor.
Can a six-inch saw cut a thicker stem if I go from both sides?
Sometimes, in soft garden wood, reviewers describe that approach. You still bury the nose in the cut, and HSE treats the chainsaw as a two-hand tool except in special circumstances. If the stem is routinely above six inches, buy bar length instead of planning double cuts.
Should I buy a kit or a bare tool?
This comparison is all kits. A bare DeWalt or Makita body makes sense when you already own the platform and want a longer bar and a named brake. If you need a first battery and charger, a kit in this set is complete. A bare platform saw is not.
Why do two listings both say 1000 W and cost different amounts?
Watts in titles and bullets are not measured motor output on these listings. Price differences here reflect bar length, battery count, case contents and review history, not a verified power test.
What is the difference between a safety lock and a chain brake?
A lock stops the trigger from starting the motor. A brake stops the chain when it is already running, which matters after kickback. Only some rows in this folder name a brake. Most minis name a lock and plastic guards.
Does the box include oil and a charger?
Chargers are included on every ASIN here. Oil is not. Many kits list an empty bottle or assume you buy bar oil separately. Check the bullets for the row before you plan a Saturday cut.
When is the Bosch pole the right shape of tool?
When the branch is overhead, you can work from the ground, and you accept a pole saw’s weight and balance. It is the wrong shape when you need to cross-cut a log pile. The pole row is ranked under power pole saws, not handheld chain saws.
