Pruning with a cordless chainsaw

Updated: 22 October 2026

A branch over the lawn looks like a quick job with the new mini until the ladder is wobbling and the tree sits in a conservation area. The [cordless chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/cordless-chainsaw) is about saws in the box. This page is about height, permission and when to call a contractor. Oil and tension stay on the how-to page, and which listing to buy stays on the best page. Peter F. used HSE, GOV.UK and the stored listings. Branches you can reach from the ground

Pruning, in garden language, usually means removing parts of a tree while it stays standing, not felling the whole stem. For a householder, the practical limit is wood you can reach with both feet on firm ground and the saw under control. A four-to-six-inch mini suits soft side branches and hedge-related cuts. A ten-to-twelve-inch bar gives one-pass capacity on thicker limbs you can still reach without climbing. If the wood diameter routinely exceeds the bar, you are no longer pruning with a mini. You are forcing double cuts, or you need more bar. The shortest-bar rule on the cordless chainsaw buying guide still applies: pick the bar that finishes the cut safely, not the star rating on a six-inch listing. BS 3998, summarised by the Arboricultural Association, recommends a final pruning cut no larger than one third of the parent branch, leaving the branch collar. That is the quality of the cut, not permission to cut.

Not from a ladder

HSE’s INDG317 and Electrical Safety First’s garden guidance agree: do not use a chainsaw from a ladder. A mini is lighter than a petrol rear-handled saw, but kickback still throws a running chain toward you, and a ladder gives you nowhere stable to go. Two hands on the saw means no hands on the ladder rungs. The only shaft tool in this comparison is the Bosch UniversalChainPole 18, a pole saw, not a handheld ground saw. Reviews reach apple and elder branches from the ground, and they complain about weight at full extension, chain tension and strap clips failing. Bosch material in reviews also references advice against ladder use with this class of tool. A pole extends reach. It does not make ladder work safe, and it does not replace a rear-handled saw for log piles on the ground. If the branch is still out of reach from the ground with a pole, the job is a contractor with a platform or rope skills, not another metre on a ladder with a battery mini.

Licence, order, and conservation area

English law splits three ideas shoppers confuse. First, Forestry Act 1967 section 9 exempts some work from a felling licence, including topping and lopping under section 9(2)(c), and trees in a garden, orchard, churchyard or public open space under other limbs of the same section. That exemption is about felling-licence volume, not about every tree rule. Second, a tree preservation order can forbid cutting, topping or lopping without written consent from the council, even when no felling licence is needed. GOV.UK’s guidance is the source. If you do not know whether an order applies, ask the council before you cut. Third, in an English conservation area, section 211 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 requires six weeks’ notice to the local planning authority before work on a tree, unless an exception applies. Councils often use a trunk-diameter threshold near 75 mm at 1.5 m. Check your authority’s published rules. Scotland and Northern Ireland use different felling and permission routes. This page’s volume figures and GOV.UK links are England-focused. A garden felling-licence exemption does not cancel a preservation order on the same tree.

The cut itself, and the contractor

When permission is clear and the branch is reachable, set up as on how to use a cordless chainsaw: oil, tension with the battery out, both hands, and cut to the side of the line. Do not strip a large limb in one heavy drop if a staged reduction keeps the bar out of a pinch. Stop when the stem is hung up, when cables run through the canopy, when the tree is protected and you lack consent, or when the work is paid tree surgery without a chainsaw certificate. PUWER expects training for work on or in trees at work, and HSE’s competent-contractor note applies when you hire. Hire an arborist for crown work, storm-damaged stems you cannot lower safely, protected trees, and any cut you would need a ladder to reach. A Seesii or Supstable row in the comparison does not change that line.

Common questions

Can I prune my own garden tree?
Often yes for minor reachable cuts on your land, but a tree preservation order or a conservation-area notice may still apply. Check before you start.
Does a felling licence apply to lopping?
Topping and lopping are treated differently from felling under the Forestry Act exemptions. A preservation order and conservation-area rules can still apply.
What if the tree has a preservation order?
You need written consent from the council for work covered by the order. A felling-licence exemption does not override it.
What do I do in a conservation area?
Give six weeks’ notice under section 211 unless an exception applies. Your council publishes how to notify.
Can I stand on a ladder with a mini chainsaw?
HSE says no. Use ground reach, a pole from the ground, or a professional.
Is the Bosch pole the alternative to a ladder?
It extends reach from the ground for light lopping. Reviews call it heavy. It is not a ladder substitute, and it is not permission to cut a protected tree.
How big a pruning cut is sensible?
BS 3998 guidance via the Arboricultural Association cites no more than one third of the parent branch at the final cut, preserving the collar, and only when you are allowed to cut at all.
When do I hire a tree surgeon instead?
For ladder or crown work, hung-up stems, protected trees without consent, work near overhead lines, and paid work that needs training and proper protective clothing.
