Pruning with a hand chainsaw

Updated: 22 October 2026

A branch over the fence looks reachable until the ladder is in the shed and the oak is in a conservation area. A battery mini from the [hand chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/hand-chainsaw) can tidy garden wood you can cut with both feet on the ground. A felling-licence exemption does not authorise a ladder cut or work on a protected tree. This page covers height, permission and a sensible cut size. Peter F. used GOV.UK, the Forestry Act and HSE guidance, not a lab cut. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Branches you can reach from the ground

Pruning here means reachable limbs and brash on garden trees and hedges, not felling a trunk or a hung-up stem. INDG317 expects the shortest bar that does the work: often a six-inch mini for wood reviewers put at roughly three to six inches, or an eight-inch kit for a thicker limb you can still reach without climbing. Use both hands, fit the auxiliary handle where the kit has one, and keep the cut below shoulder height, standing to the side of the bar. If the wood is thicker than the bar, move to a longer bar or call someone with training. Which listing matches that wood is on best hand chainsaw for a UK garden. There is no pole saw in this table. Overhead wood is a different tool or an arborist’s quote.

Not from a ladder

HSE’s leaflet says do not use a chainsaw from a ladder. Electrical Safety First gives the same warning for corded saws. A spinning chain is a worse balance problem than secateurs. A light mini does not change the rule. The Bosch lists 1.28 kg and the six- and eight-inch kits about 2.3 to 2.4 kg. If the plan needs steps, a platform or a lean from a balcony, hire a tree surgeon or use a tool meant for reach from the ground. This comparison is battery-only. The ladder ban applies whatever the power source.

Licence, order and conservation area

Forestry Act 1967 section 9 exempts many garden and lopping situations from the felling-licence regime. Topping and lopping are not the same as felling a trunk. That exemption does not cancel other law. A tree preservation order needs written consent from the local planning authority before you cut protected wood, including lopping. GOV.UK’s guidance applies in England. Check Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland if the tree is not in England. In an English conservation area, section 211 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 typically requires six weeks’ notice unless an exception applies. Councils often cite about 75 mm at 1.5 metres. Ask before you start. The five-cubic-metre quarterly limit in England is about trunk felling, not every small prune. A TPO or conservation area still comes before bar length.

The cut itself, and the contractor

Arboricultural Association guidance on BS 3998 recommends a final cut no larger than one third of the parent branch, and leaving the branch collar where that applies. That is tree care, not a substitute for consent. Use a sharp chain, bar oil and stable footing. Oil and tension are on how to use a hand chainsaw. Call a professional for a hung-up stem, cables in the canopy, a protected tree without consent, or paid work that expects a chainsaw certificate unless you are in supervised training. PUWER targets employers. A householder is not automatically in that regime. The same physics still apply on the lawn.

Common questions

Does a felling licence apply to lopping?
Many lopping and garden cases fall outside the felling-licence regime under the Forestry Act 1967. Felling a trunk, or exceeding the volume limits, is different. GOV.UK’s England guidance is the starting point. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own pages. The exemption does not cancel a tree preservation order.
What if the tree has a preservation order?
You need written consent from the local planning authority before cutting protected parts, and that includes lopping. Cutting without consent can be an offence. GOV.UK’s tree preservation order guidance applies in England. If the tree is in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, check that nation’s rules before you start.
What do I do in a conservation area?
In England, section 211 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 typically requires six weeks’ notice before you cut, unless an exception applies. The council may respond by making a tree preservation order during that period. If you are unsure whether the tree is in a conservation area, ask the council before the branch is on the lawn.
How big a pruning cut is sensible?
BS 3998-style advice from the Arboricultural Association is to avoid removing more than one third of the parent branch in a single final cut, and to leave the branch collar where that applies. Stay within what you can control from the ground with a bar that fits the limb. That guidance is about tree care. It does not replace consent for a protected tree.
When do I hire a tree surgeon instead?
Hire one for ladder or crown work, a protected tree without consent, a stem hung up in another tree, overhead lines, a diameter beyond your bar, or any paid job that expects certified chainsaw competence. A householder pruning from the lawn is not automatically under the contractor training rules. The kickback and ladder risks are the same.
