Hand chainsaw comparison 2026

The best hand chainsaws, compared.

Top pick: Bosch EasyChain 18V-15-7 Best value: Supstable 10C6M – Best value under about £45 with a 4.4 line and thousands of reviews: about £39.98, a 6 inch bar and two batteries. Updated October 2026.

A hand chainsaw here is a battery mini or compact saw you hold in one or two hands. HSE’s says choose the shortest bar suitable for the work. Eight inches adds reach if you stay on the ground. Check whether chain oil is in the box, and whether the listing names a chain brake or only a trigger lock. Watts on the cheaper saws are seller claims. Stihl, and bare or bodies are not in this table. Bar, battery and oiling are in the [hand chainsaw buying guide](/hub/forestry-tools/hand-chainsaw/sub/hand-chainsaw-buying-guide). Bars in the listings are mostly 6 inches, with 8 inch options on the Seesii CH850, the Supstable S3 Plus and the Seesii M8 Boost. The M8 is supplied with an 8 inch bar fitted and a 6 inch bar and chain in the kit. Adds a 4 inch chain and guide plate to a 6 inch chain. A 6 inch bar can nibble a thicker stem from both sides, but the nose stays in the cut, and the nose is the kickback zone. Eleven of the twelve listings include a battery and a charger. Treat amp-hour labels as swap time, not cutting speed. Seesii lists two 4000 mAh packs on the CH850, the CH700R and the M8.

A hand chainsaw here is a battery mini or compact saw you hold in one or two hands. HSE’s says choose the shortest bar suitable for the work. Eight inches adds reach if you stay on the ground.

The best hand chainsaws in detail

Bosch EasyChain 18V-15-7

Rank 1

Bosch EasyChain 18V-15-7

∼£144

Our view

The Bosch EasyChain 18V-15-7, part 06008B8970, is listed on amazon.co.uk at about £143.99 with 4.6 from 72 reviews. One 2.5 Ah battery and an AL 1830 CV charger are in the included components. The motor is described as brushless on special features. A 50 ml oil bottle is listed, the only listing in this set that prints a filled oil quantity. The bullets name tool-free SDS chain tension. Item weight is 1.28 kg. The saved spec block does not print a bar length. The model is EasyChain 18V-15-7, which the buying notes read as a 15 cm bar in the Bosch title. UK reviews praise medium branches: one reviewer cites about 75 mm and another about 10–15 cm. The limit is the small sample. Best sellers rank: 1,836 in Garden and 11 in Chain Saws.

Pros

  • Cuts medium branches; one reviewer cites about 75 mm and another about 10–15 cm
  • SDS chain adjuster called much easier than other saws
  • Light, with a battery that lasts a good hour for one reviewer
  • 3-year guarantee mentioned by a buyer

Cons

  • Only 26 UK reviews in the saved sample, so long-term faults are thin
  • One reviewer had not used it enough to judge reliability
  • A silver-birch job at about 20 cm is one review, not a printed capacity
  • Star line is 4.6 from 72, a small count next to the mini-saw listings

Best for: A branded compact saw with one 2.5 Ah battery, if you accept 72 reviews and a price of about £143.99.

Less suitable: A buyer who wants two batteries, a large review count, or a bar length printed on this listing.

Seesii CH850

Rank 2

Seesii CH850

∼£70

Our view

The Seesii CH850 is listed on amazon.co.uk at about £69.98 with 4.5 from 9,284 reviews. The listing states an 8 inch bar, two 4000 mAh batteries, and a motor of 900 watts. The oiler is a manual oil reservoir with an empty bottle. The bullets stress one-hand use and a manual oiler, and the kit includes goggles and gloves. Item weight is 2.3 kg. The bullets say 3.8 lb. In the UK reviews, praise centres on small trees, hedges and branches in confined spaces. The repeated limit is that oil is not included. Best sellers rank on the listing: 362 in Garden and 3 in Chain Saws. On the scoring used here it is the top pick, which is not a lab test.

Pros

  • Cuts small trees, hedges and branches in confined spaces
  • Battery lasted through multi-tree trimming for several reviewers
  • Chain stays sharp for saplings and young sycamore in one review
  • Lighter than a full-size petrol saw for buyers who already own one

Cons

  • Oil is not included
  • A few returns in the 50-review sample
  • Heavier than the cheapest 6 inch saws
  • Not yet used by some reviewers who only comment on packing

Best for: Thicker garden wood from the ground, if you want an 8 inch bar and two 4000 mAh batteries.

Less suitable: A first cut before you have bought bar oil, or a buyer who wants the lightest 6 inch saw.

Seesii CH700R

Rank 3

Seesii CH700R

∼£50

Our view

The Seesii CH700R is listed on amazon.co.uk at about £49.99 with 4.5 from 9,284 reviews. The listing states a 6 inch bar and two 21 V 4.0 Ah batteries. The spec line says 900 watts and the bullets say 1000 W. The oiler is manual, with an empty oil bottle. The listing names a safety lock, a flip guard, goggles, and an auxiliary handle in the components. Item weight is 3.7 kg. The bullets say 1.4 kg (3.1 lb). UK reviews in the shared block praise cutting speed and battery life past 30 minutes. The repeated limits are that oil is not included, and that the review text is shared with the 8 inch ASIN. Best sellers rank matches that file: 362 in Garden and 3 in Chain Saws.

Pros

  • Reviewers in the shared block praise cutting speed and battery life past 30 minutes
  • Used for hedges, small trees and confined pruning
  • Chain described as sharp
  • Lighter than a large petrol saw for buyers who already own one

Cons

  • Oil not included
  • Same review block as the 8 inch listing, so model-specific faults are not separated
  • Item weight 3.7 kg conflicts with the 1.4 kg bullet
  • Motor line conflicts: 900 W on the spec, 1000 W on the bullets

Best for: A 6 inch saw with two 4000 mAh packs, if you accept that the star line is shared with the CH850.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs model-specific faults separated from the 8 inch listing, or a filled oil bottle.

Rank 12

GAEEP 4L

∼£34

Our view

The GAEEP 4L is listed on amazon.co.uk at about £33.99 with 3.9 from 58 reviews, the lowest star line in this set. The title says 6 inch. Batteries are two 3000 mAh packs. The bullets say 800 W. The bullets say an automatic oiler. Safety on the bullets is a dual-switch safety lock and a guard. Item weight is 2.51 kg. The bullets say 2.5 lb. Chain speed on the listing is 8 m/s. UK reviews say it does the stated garden job for some buyers. The repeated limits are jamming every couple of revolutions on branches under an inch, one of two batteries working, a chain-oil bottle nearly empty, and a charger earth pin that would not open the socket shutter. Best sellers rank: 4,612 in Garden and 21 in Chain Saws.

Pros

  • Does the stated garden job for some buyers
  • Compact enough for a woodturner to carry
  • Easy for one woman reviewer
  • Cuts garden trees when it runs

Cons

  • Jams every couple of revolutions on branches under an inch
  • Only one of two batteries worked
  • Chain-oil bottle nearly empty
  • Charger earth pin would not open the socket shutter

Best for: A low shelf price only after you have read the 3.9 line from 58 reviews.

Less suitable: Thin branches, if reviewers report jamming, or a buyer who needs both batteries to arrive working.

How we compared

Twelve amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the saved pages dated 20 October 2026. There is no laboratory cut. Amazon evidence uses the star line, then the review count. Listing fit uses the stated bar, batteries, a safety lock and an oiler, with points off for one battery or a power line that lists corded, manual and battery together. Review outcome uses UK notes on garden branches and small trunks, with points off when a chain jumps off, a battery arrives dead, a safety button sticks, or the review block is shared with another ASIN. Value is the shelf price in GBP against bar and battery. The highest score is the top pick. The best value is the saw under about £45 with a 4.4 line and thousands of reviews.

1

Amazon evidence

35%

The amazon.co.uk star line, then the review count. A 4.5 from 9,284 scores higher than a 4.6 from 72, because the count is small.

2

Listing fit

30%

A stated bar, two batteries, a safety lock and an oiler score up. One battery, a missing bar, or a power line that lists corded, manual and battery together scores down.

3

Review outcome

20%

UK reviews score up when buyers cut garden branches and small trunks. Points come off when the chain jumps off, a battery arrives dead, a safety button sticks, or the review block is shared.

4

Value

15%

Shelf price in GBP against bar and battery. About £40 with two batteries scores higher than £143.99 with one battery, and a 3.9 star line does not become the value pick.

Hand chainsaw buying guide

Judge the bar first, then the batteries in the box, then whether chain oil is actually included. A lock button is not a chain brake. Listed watts are seller claims. The twelve listings below are the ones kept for this page. There is no laboratory cut.

What is a hand chainsaw?

A hand chainsaw in this set is a battery mini or compact saw you hold in one or two hands. It is not a petrol forest saw. Bars in the listings are mostly 6 inches, with 8 inch options on the Seesii CH850, the Supstable S3 Plus and the Seesii M8 Boost. The M8 Boost is supplied with an 8 inch bar fitted and a 6 inch bar and chain in the kit. ARTKUNST adds a 4 inch chain and guide plate to a 6 inch chain. HSE’s INDG317 says choose the shortest bar suitable for the work.

Best for

  • Reachable garden branches and hedge brash, once you have bought bar oil and proper gloves
  • A lighter second tool beside a petrol saw, not a replacement for hardwood rounds

Not ideal for

  • Ladder or crown work, a hung-up stem, a protected tree, or any paid job without a chainsaw certificate
  • A buyer who ranks the saws by the watt number in the title

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Ranking by the watt number

Title watts, including 850 W on the Angseen SY-LT05 bullets and 880 W on SINPY, are seller claims. Spec lines and bullets disagree on several ASINs. They are not a power ranking.

  2. 2

Starting with an empty oil bottle

SINPY, Supstable and Seesii kits are repeatedly reviewed as arriving without chain oil. An automatic-oiler bullet does not fill the bottle. Bar oil is not used engine oil.

  3. 3

Treating kit gloves as chainsaw PPE

Gloves and goggles in the box are not BS EN 381-5 legs, BS EN ISO 17249 boots, or the rest of HSE’s chainsaw clothing list.

  4. 4

Burying the bar nose in a thicker stem

A short bar can nibble from both sides. The nose is the kickback zone. If the stem needs a ladder, a hung-up cut, or work in the crown, stop and call a professional.

What to weigh up

Bar length

High

Choose the shortest bar that can do the cut. INDG317 is the UK source for that rule, and it also says not to use a chainsaw on a ladder. In this set, 6 inch saws are the Angseen pair, GAEEP, SINPY, Supstable 10C6M, ARTKUNST, Peektook and Seesii CH700R. ARTKUNST also includes a 4 inch chain and plate. Eight inch saws are the Seesii CH850, the Supstable S3 Plus, and the Seesii M8 Boost, which adds a 6 inch bar in the box. The Bosch spec block on this ASIN does not print a bar length.

Batteries and oil in the box

High

Count the batteries, then read the oil line. Two packs mean you can swap. They do not mean a faster cut. Seesii’s 4000 mAh pairs are on the CH850, the CH700R and the M8 Boost. The £34 to £40 minis mostly list two 2000 mAh or 3000 mAh packs. Angseen SY-LT05 and the Bosch EasyChain ship one battery, 2000 mAh and 2.5 Ah. Oil is the second check. An empty bottle is the usual kit. SINPY’s automatic-oiler claim still meets UK reviews that say the bottle is empty. Bosch prints 50 ml.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Garden branches and brash

You are cutting reachable branches and hedge brash, and you still need to buy bar oil and proper gloves. The Supstable 10C6M is about £39.98, with a 6 inch bar, two batteries, and 4.4 from 5,321 reviews.

A lighter second saw

You already own a petrol saw and want a lighter tool for pruning, not a replacement for hardwood rounds. The Seesii CH850 is about £69.98, with an 8 inch bar and two 4000 mAh batteries.

Six inch or eight inch

You are weighing an 8 inch mini against a 6 inch price leader. The Supstable 10C6M is the 6 inch shelf at about £39.98. The Seesii CH850 is the 8 inch top pick at about £69.98.

Common questions about hand chainsaws

What is a hand chainsaw in this comparison?
A hand chainsaw here is a battery mini or compact saw you hold in one or two hands, with a guide bar typically between 6 and 8 inches. It is not a petrol forest saw. Stihl, Husqvarna and bare Makita or DeWalt bodies are not in this table. Twelve amazon.co.uk listings run from about £34 to £144. Most kits include two batteries. The scores use the listing text and UK review notes. There is no laboratory cut.
How much does a hand chainsaw cost in the UK?
On these amazon.co.uk listings the shelf runs from about £33.99 to £143.99. The entry band, about £34 to £40, includes GAEEP, both Angseen listings, the Supstable 10C6M, ARTKUNST and SINPY. The mid band, about £50 to £70, includes Peektook, Seesii CH700R, the Seesii dual-bar kit, the Supstable 8 inch and the Seesii CH850. The Bosch EasyChain is £143.99. Figures are from the saved listings, not a live re-check on 20 October 2026.
Is a 6 inch or an 8 inch bar the one to buy?
HSE’s INDG317 says choose the shortest bar suitable for the work. Six inches suits light pruning. Eight inches adds reach for thicker garden wood if you still work from the ground with two hands. A 6 inch bar can nibble a thicker stem from both sides, but the nose stays in the cut, and the nose is the kickback zone. Do not treat a longer bar as safer. INDG317 also says avoid a chainsaw on a ladder.
Is chain oil included with these hand chainsaws?
Often no. Many kits ship an empty bottle and no bar oil. UK reviews on SINPY, Supstable and Seesii repeat that. SINPY’s bullets claim an automatic oiler. Buy bar oil before the first cut anyway. Bar oil is not two-stroke mix and not used engine oil. The Bosch listing is the one that prints a 50 ml oil bottle in the included components. Do not start a saw on an empty bottle.
Are the gloves in the box chainsaw PPE?
No. Kit gloves are not HSE chainsaw clothing. HSE’s list for chainsaw work includes leg protection to BS EN 381-5, boots to BS EN ISO 17249, a helmet to BS EN 397 when you are on the ground, hearing protection to BS EN 352, and eye protection to BS EN 1731 or BS EN 166. Goggles in a mini-saw kit do not replace that list. A lock button is not a chain brake. Read the words on the listing and do not upgrade a guard into a brake.
Do I need a felling licence to prune a garden tree?
Often no, and that is not a free pass. Forestry Act 1967 section 9 exempts topping, lopping and trees in a garden from the felling-licence regime in many domestic cases in England. A tree preservation order still needs consent. In an English conservation area, section 211 needs six weeks’ notice unless an exception applies. A garden exemption does not cancel a preservation order. Call a professional for a protected tree, a hung-up stem, or ladder work.
When is a petrol chainsaw the better tool?
Use a hand chainsaw here for reachable pruning, not for hardwood rounds or a large volume of firewood. A 6 or 8 inch battery bar is the wrong tool for that volume, a hung-up stem, or work in a tree. Petrol saws are in the petrol chainsaw comparison. At work, HSE expects a certificate before chainsaw work on or in a tree unless the person is training under supervision. A householder in their own garden is not automatically in that regime.
Should I rank these saws by the watt number?
No. Listed motor watts on the cheaper saws are seller claims, not a measured power ranking. Several listings disagree with themselves: the Supstable 10C6M prints 1000 watts on the spec line and 900 W brushed on the bullets, and Peektook prints 700 watts and 1000 W. ARTKUNST lists corded, manual and battery on one power line while the title says cordless. Use bar length, batteries in the box, oil, and the UK review notes. Do not treat an 8-second cut claim as a measured result.

Our verdict

Twelve amazon.co.uk listings, with no laboratory cut. The Seesii CH850 has the highest score: about £69.98, an 8 inch bar, two 4000 mAh batteries, and 4.5 from 9,284 reviews. The Seesii CH700R prints the same star line, so that count is not a second independent sample. The Supstable 10C6M is the best value under about £45: about £39.98, a 6 inch bar, two batteries, and 4.4 from 5,321 reviews. The Bosch EasyChain is about £143.99 with 4.6 from 72 reviews and one battery. Listed watts are seller claims.
