Hand chainsaw buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk comparing star ratings and watt numbers, yet neither tells you whether a six-inch mini can finish an apple limb in one pass or whether you need an eight-inch bar for storm-damaged wood. The [hand chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/hand-chainsaw) lists twelve battery kits from about £34 to £144, mostly six- and eight-inch minis plus one Bosch EasyChain compact. This guide walks bar length, what is in the box, oiling and the safety words on the listing, before you pick a brand. Peter F. read those listings and HSE guidance. He did not lab-test the saws. Match the bar to the wood

HSE’s leaflet INDG317 tells you to choose the shortest guide bar that still does the job. In a UK garden that usually means a six-inch bar for reachable branches, hedge brash and softwood reviewers here describe as roughly three to six inches. An eight-inch bar adds reach for thicker garden wood. You still work from the ground with two hands, not from a ladder, and not with the nose buried in a cut wider than the bar. A bar a little longer than one pass is a rule of thumb, not a lab measurement. Two-sided cuts leave the nose in the kerf, the kickback zone. Wood routinely above six inches points to an eight-inch kit or a petrol saw. Six-inch kits dominate about £34 to £50. Eight-inch options around £60 to £70 are Seesii CH850, Supstable S3 Plus and Seesii M8 Boost. The Bosch EasyChain at about £143.99 does not print a bar length, so the table shows n/a. The model name is read as fifteen centimetres.

Kit, battery and the bare-tool gap

Every row here ships with at least one battery and a charger. Trade shops sell DeWalt, Makita and similar bodies from roughly £140 upward without a pack. Those platform saws buy into a voltage system you may already own, closer to what Which? tests from about £169 to £830. Entry kits around £34 to £40 are six-inch minis with two small packs, often 2000 mAh. Mid kits around £50 to £70 add larger batteries or an eight-inch bar. One Seesii row mentions Makita eighteen-volt packs. That is one review, not a guarantee. A twenty-one-volt label is not a power ranking against an eighteen-volt Bosch. Compare bar length, battery count and whether oiling is automatic or manual. Two listings can both print 1000 W and cost £40 apart.

Oiling, tension and the safety words

Several minis ship an empty oil bottle. Bar oil is purpose-made. It is not two-stroke mix and not used engine oil. UK reviews on SINPY, Supstable and Seesii repeat that chain oil is not in the box. SINPY’s bullets claim an automatic oiler. You still buy bar oil first. The Bosch EasyChain is the only listing that prints a fifty-millilitre bottle. A slack chain climbs off the sprocket, a theme in SINPY, Peektook, Supstable and Seesii reviews. A lock button stops an accidental start. A chain brake stops a moving chain after kickback. Most six-inch listings name a lock and guards, not BS EN ISO 11681-1 hardware, which targets combustion forest saws. Do not read safety lock as a named chain brake. Kit gloves and goggles are not HSE chainsaw clothing.

A decision you can take to the comparison

Measure the wood you cut in a typical year, pick the shortest bar that finishes those cuts from the ground, then check batteries, oil or an empty bottle, and the safety words. Ignore title watts such as 880 W on SINPY or 850 W on GAEEP. The best hand chainsaw for a UK garden page assigns rows to jobs. If you need a full day of large timber, or you already own professional batteries, use hand chainsaw vs petrol.

Common questions

Can a six-inch saw cut a thicker stem if I go from both sides?
Sometimes, if the wood is green garden timber and you keep the nose out of a bind. Reviewers in this comparison report five- to six-inch Leylandii and apple limbs on six-inch kits. That is not permission to treat a mini as a firewood saw. It is a limit case where bar length and kickback control matter more than the star rating.
Should I buy a kit or a bare tool?
These twelve listings are kits, with a battery and charger in the box. If you already own DeWalt, Makita or Bosch eighteen-volt packs, a bare platform body from a tool shop may cost less over time than duplicate chargers. None of those bare bodies are rows in this comparison. They sit nearer the Which? band from about £169 upward.
Why do two listings both say 1000 W and cost different amounts?
The watt field is marketing on many minis. Peektook prints 700 W on the spec line and 1000 W on the bullets. Seesii CH700R reverses that pattern. Price reflects bar length, battery size, review volume and brand, not a verified power test. Compare the wood you cut and what UK reviews say about stamina, not the watt headline.
What is the difference between a safety lock and a chain brake?
A lock stops the trigger from starting the motor. A brake stops the chain after kickback. Most six-inch kits here name a lock and guards. Read the words on each listing rather than assuming forest-saw hardware. BS EN ISO 11681-1 targets combustion forest saws, not these compact kits. Kit gloves are not HSE chainsaw clothing.
Is a 21 V pack more powerful than an 18 V pack?
Not automatically. Capacity in amp-hours matters for how soon you swap packs. Motor and bar length matter for the cut. A twenty-one-volt mini and an eighteen-volt Bosch are different tools. Compare what reviewers say about stamina on wood your size, not the voltage headline alone.
