How to choose an axe sharpener

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are at the chopping block with a splitting axe that skids off the log, and the amazon.co.uk shelf called Axe & Knife Sharpeners is mixing palm stones, a guided ceramic slot, and pocket tools that also claim scissors. An axe sharpener earns its place only if it matches the damage and the shape of the bit. The [ax sharpener comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/ax-sharpener) holds the product table. By the end you should know whether you are buying a puck, a guided slot, or neither. Peter F. read the October 2026 captures. This is not a laboratory test. Three tools that are not the same sharpener

A puck is a stone you hold in the palm and move in small circles along the bevel already on the axe. On this shelf that job is the Lansky LPUCK at about £11.33, the Bacher at about £15.99, and the DDF iohEF at about £18.82. You supply the angle, which helps on a convex bit and hurts if you steepen it to see steel come off. A guided sharpener sets its own path. The Fiskars Xsharp, ASIN B006QIPLFO, is the ceramic example, at about £9.07, and UK reviews use it on Fiskars axes more steadily than on a curved cheek. The SHARPAL 129N sat at number 1 on the saved rank line, at about £10.99, and one UK review said it did not touch an axe. Browse rank is a shopping position. Read the Fiskars Xsharp page only when the bit is already the flat Fiskars shape.

Damage first, then the shape of the bit

A smooth dull edge is a hone. A small nick on a continuous edge is the coarse face of a puck. A deep chip, where a piece of the edge is missing, starts with a file. Gränsfors Bruk and Gun Mart both split the work that way: file the ding back, then stone, and do not overheat the steel. None of these ten listings is a file. Survival School listed a Gränsfors diamond axe file at £44.95, above this shelf’s ceiling of about £22. A convex forest bit wants a puck. A flat Fiskars-style bit can sit in the Xsharp slot. Forcing a curve into that slot changes the grind. Conservation Handbooks names steepening the bevel, just to hurry, as a common mistake. Published degree figures disagree, so match the bevel you can see. If the chip has depth, read axe puck vs file before you add another stone.

Grit and lubricant stay inside one product

A grit number only means something inside the listing that printed it. Bacher states 120 and 600. DDF states 180 and 320. The SHARPAL 121N states 325 and 1200, also given as 45 and 12 micron. Lansky prints no grit number. Those scales are not one ladder across brands. Lubricant follows the same rule. Bacher allows a water soak of about five minutes, honing oil, or dry use. Lansky’s puck guide says dry is acceptable and that oil clears swarf. The SHARPAL 121N and the Deruilong stone are dry. Deruilong, at about £17.99, names an axe, and the sampled UK reviews talk about knives and chisels. S&R’s handled stone names axes at about £5.98, and those UK reviews are about knives.

What the amazon.co.uk shelf costs

These prices are amazon.co.uk captures. Entry, about £6 to £12, holds S&R at £5.98, Mystnviou at £8.89, the Fiskars Xsharp at £9.07, the SHARPAL 129N at £10.99, and the Lansky puck at £11.33. Mid, about £16 to £22, holds Bacher at £15.99, Deruilong at £17.99, DDF at £18.82, SHARPAL 121N at £19.99, and SHARPAL 103N at £21.99. They do not include the £44.95 file. Mystnviou has no Customer Reviews line, and its title says silicon carbide while its material field says brown fused alumina. Who should leave each listing is on the best axe sharpener UK page.

Common questions

What grit should an axe puck be?
Use the pair printed on the puck you buy. Coarse first for a light nick, fine to finish a sound edge. Bacher prints 120 and 600, DDF prints 180 and 320, and Lansky prints no number. A diamond plate that says 325 and 1200 is a different scale. If the listing is silent, you cannot invent a grit.
Is a knife sharpener good enough for an axe?
Only when the abrasive meets an axe bit and the reviews mention axes. Several listings name an axe in the title while the UK review sample talks about knives, chisels, or scissors. If the axe is the tool, buy a puck, or the Fiskars slot when the bit is a flat Fiskars. The slot still fails when the cheek is curved.
Do I need oil?
You need oil only when that listing allows it. Bacher permits a short water soak, honing oil, or dry use. Lansky says you can work dry and use oil to clear metal dust. The SHARPAL 121N and the Deruilong stone are specified dry. If the listing is silent, do not copy another brand’s lubricant.
How much should I spend on amazon.co.uk?
On this shelf, about £6 to £12 covers the entry stones, the Fiskars slot, and the pocket tools, and about £16 to £22 covers the numbered pucks and the larger plates. Spending more inside the band does not buy a file. A UK specialist listed a Gränsfors diamond axe file at £44.95, outside these ASINs. Check the live amazon.co.uk price. These figures are captures.
Does a high star rating mean it works on axes?
A high star rating means many buyers were broadly content. It is not a trial on your bit. The kept listings that have stars sit roughly between 4.2 and 4.6, which is too tight to rank. Lansky’s 17,585 reviews are the largest sample here. They say the puck has been bought at scale. Mystnviou has no rating line. Read whether the written reviews mention a bit.
When do I need a file instead?
You need a file when a piece of the edge is missing, not when the edge is only dull. Gränsfors and Gun Mart start that repair with a file, then a stone, and they warn against overheating. A puck can tidy a light nick. One DDF reviewer reported 10 to 15 minutes on a chipped Fiskars, which is a single report. If the gap has depth, the stone is the second tool.
