How to use a log splitter

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have either a hoop or a ram, and the steps are not the same job. How to use a log splitter depends on which you are holding. A kindling ring wants the wood inside the hoop and your hand off it before the hammer falls. An electric ram wants both controls, one operator, and the guard left on. Peter F. used the listings in the [log splitter comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/log-splitter), HSE's firewood bulletin and a UK retailer's ring method, as checked on 21 October 2026. This desk did not film a session. If you have not chosen yet, use the [log splitter buying guide](/hub/forestry-tools/log-splitter/sub/log-splitter-buying-guide). If you have a ring or a fixed blade

Fandango's method for the Original is a ring method. Fix it down, set the piece in the hoop, tap it so it sits, take your hand away, and strike the wood, not the blade. Keep children out of the swing. The listing prints a 16.5 cm ring, and the included line says Funnel, so bring your own hammer. The King prints 23 cm. If the wood will not pass the ring, stop. The Meepocan is an open edge of about 15 cm with no ring, so the free hand leaves the wood first and you bolt it down before a loose wedge walks. The Fachmach is a lever that claims no hammer. One owner could not use its screws on metal uprights. Which ring to buy is on the kindling splitter page.

If you have an electric ram

Set the Lazy-Log level before you plug it in. Forest Master's fault table is for that maker's machines, not this ASIN: do not point it downhill, check the oil, and treat a blown fuse as a fault. Do not adjust the pressure screw. Bullets say the oil is pre-filled, and a review says an unchecked level voids the warranty. Fit the guard. The bed claim is 520 mm by 250 mm. A log that misses it does not get a second person on the end. HSE bulletin OPSTD 2-2011 wants both controls together, one operator, and a guard that stops a hand. The printed cycle is 11 seconds out and 8 seconds back. Clear the pieces when the ram is home. Voltage is not printed. A long lead is a question for an electrician.

What not to copy from reviews

Several Lazy-Log reviews say the cage bends, jams the log, or was taken off. That is not a step. HSE's bulletin describes the injuries when a guard is missing or a control is jammed so one hand stays on the timber. If the cage fouls the log, the log is the wrong size or the cage is damaged. Stop. A helper steadying the round, or pulling a stuck half while the ram is live, is the second operator the bulletin rules out. On a ring, a helper holding the stick is a hand in the hammer path. If a lever can be tied so the machine runs one-handed, that is the modification HSE investigated. Leave it.

When the machine should go back

Stop when oil pools, the frame cracks, or the fuse blows more than once. Do not fit a larger fuse, and do not turn the pressure screw. If the only way to finish is to remove the guard, the session is over. A ring that walks goes back on the stump bolts. Call an electrician for the lead, the reel or the socket. Call the seller for the frame, the seal or the oil. If employees use the machine, PUWER 1998 sits with the employer. Wet wood you have just opened is still wet.

Common questions

Can I take the safety cage off if it jams the log?
No. Reviews that describe taking the Lazy-Log cage off are describing the pattern HSE bulletin OPSTD 2-2011 warns about, not a setup. If the cage fouls the log, the log does not fit or the guard is damaged. Stop the session. Do not unbolt the cage to finish the pile, and do not jam a control so one hand can hold the wood.
Where do my hands go on an open steel blade?
Both hands are off the wood before the hammer falls. One hand holds the hammer. The other is clear of the edge, not steadying the stick beside the blade. Bolt the wedge down first. A Meepocan review warns about the hammer hand because the edge is open and there is no ring to catch a follow-through.
What if oil is low or the fuse blows?
Stop. Low oil and a repeating fuse are faults, not the start of a longer afternoon. Do not adjust the pressure screw. Forest Master leaves that to the dealer on its own machines, and the Lazy-Log file does not give you a procedure either. A second blown fuse means the machine or the supply needs a competent person, not a larger fuse.
Can a second person pull the pieces clear?
Not while the ram is moving, and not while you are swinging a hammer. HSE's bulletin is one operator, with nobody else clearing wood in the split. On a ring, a helper holding the stick is a hand in the hammer path. You clear the pieces yourself when the tool has stopped.
When do I stop and get a dealer or an electrician?
Stop for a dealer or the seller when oil pools, the frame cracks, a seal fails, or the only way to continue is to remove the guard. Stop for an electrician when the lead, the reel, or the fuse is the failure, especially on a long run. If the machine is used by employees, the employer's PUWER duties apply, and a garden how-to is not that assessment.
