Kindling splitter

Updated: 22 October 2026

The logs are already in the porch, and the stove wants a handful of sticks. A kindling splitter is the hand tool for that job: a ring, a fixed blade, or a wall lever that opens a piece small enough to fit. It does not replace a hydraulic ram, and it does not dry the wood. Peter F. used the hand-tool rows on the [log splitter comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/log-splitter), their amazon.co.uk prices and UK retailer notes for the Original's ring, as checked on 21 October 2026. This desk did not run a lab test. How you strike is on the [how to use a log splitter](/hub/forestry-tools/log-splitter/sub/log-splitter-how-to-use) page. What a kindling tool is for

You are making sticks from timber already sawn to length. The Wood Burner's buyer's guide separates that job from tonne-class machines. A ring at £124 or £169, or a wedge from £17.99 to £49.99, is a hammer or a lever. A 50 kg ram is a clumsy way to make the same handful of sticks. The Original prints 16.5 cm inside the ring. The King prints 23 cm. A piece that will not pass the hoop does not get a harder swing. The ConBlom chisel is about 90 mm wide. The Meepocan bullet says 6 inch, about 15 cm, with no ring. Measure one log first. Bed length and tonne labels sit on the log splitter buying guide.

Original and King

The Original is £124.00, with 4.8 from 8,562 ratings, a 16.5 cm ring and 4.8 kg. Fandango prints the same ring and mass. The included line says Funnel, so the hammer is yours. Reviewers bolt it down and call £124 high. That sample is why it is the top pick when the wood fits 16.5 cm. The King is £169.00, with 4.7 from 5,176 ratings and a 23 cm ring. Ignore the 454 g row: a reviewer calls the XL over 10 kg. One review says hardwood broke the blade in about 15 minutes. That is one text, not a rate.

Open blades and the wall lever

From £17.99 to £49.99 there is no hoop. The Meepocan is £39.99, with 4.4 from 98 ratings. Reviews like small straight softwood and warn about the hammer hand, so it is the best value pick only for that wood. The Fachmach is £49.99, 4.2 from 62, and one blade bent after about five logs. The Mskekit is £19.88, 4.2 from 35. The ConBlom is £17.99, about 90 mm wide, 3.8 from 18, and one buyer says the photos overstated it. A round that will not sit on these edges is a ram job.

Base, hammer, and when the wood is dry enough

Bolt every one of these tools down. Original reviews say it walks, and the mounting holes are not in the bullets. The King prints pre-drilled holes. The hammer is yours, except on the Fachmach, and no file prints a hammer weight. The listings do not answer indoor use. A missed swing belongs on a stump. In England, wood sold for domestic burning under 2 m³ must be at or under 20% moisture. That 2020 rule is England only. Sticks from a wet log are still wet.

Common questions

Do I need a hydraulic splitter to make kindling?
No. A ring or a fixed blade is the usual tool for sticks, if the piece already fits. The Original at £124.00 has 4.8 from 8,562 ratings for that job. A hydraulic ram is for rounds on a bed, and the electric rows in this folder are a different purchase. Using a 50 kg machine to make a handful of sticks is the slow way round.
Original or King?
Choose the Original when the wood passes 16.5 cm. Choose the King when it does not, and it does pass 23 cm, and you accept £169.00 plus a weight row you should not quote. Both have large review samples. The King's 454 g line conflicts with a review that says over 10 kg. Neither ring splits a log that sits outside the hoop.
Can I use it indoors?
The listings do not answer that. A missed hammer on a cast-iron blade is a shed or a stump problem, not a kitchen one. Bolt the tool to something that will not walk, keep children out of the swing, and keep a second person's hands off the wood. An unanswered product question is not permission.
What about oak?
Do not assume oak will open cleanly. Some King reviews say knot-free hard wood splits. One review says hardwood bent and broke the blade in about 15 minutes. That is a single text, not a rate, and it is not fixed by hitting harder. If the piece is a knotty round that will not enter the ring, it is a ram problem, not a kindling problem.
Can I burn the sticks the same day?
Only if the wood was already dry enough. Splitting does not remove moisture. In England, small retail volumes of wood for domestic burning are limited to 20% moisture under the 2020 regulations and GOV.UK Ready to Burn guidance. That rule is England only. Sticks you have just opened from a wet log are still wet, wherever you are in the UK.
