Log splitter buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are in the shed with a tape and a title that shouts a tonne rating. A log splitter buying guide is useful when it tells you which number to set aside. The tonne on an amazon.co.uk title is the seller's label. The Wood Burner states there is no regulated tonnage test, and two of its pages suggest different force bands. Peter F. compared the nine listings in the [log splitter comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/log-splitter), their GBP prices and public UK sources, as checked on 21 October 2026. This desk did not measure force. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the ton number is

The figure that looks like a test is a marketing line. The Wood Burner says there is no regulated tonnage test. The same publisher suggests 5 to 7 tonne for a typical stove and about 20 tonne for hardwood. Those are editorial suggestions, not British Standards, and they were not measured on these ASINs. The Lazy-Log titles say 5 ton and 7 ton, both at £304.95. The Garvee says 12 ton at £259.99, with no reviews. The Kindling Cracker rows use no tonne, because a hammer and a ring are not a cylinder. A 7 ton label on a 520 mm bed still refuses a 600 mm log. Tape a log you already own, then set the title number aside.

Length, width, and the ring

Both Lazy-Log files claim a bed up to 520 mm long and 250 mm wide. Rounds outside that are the wrong shape. BS EN 609-1:2017 covers wedge splitters, with one person starting the split, and it is not a saw-and-split machine. The Original prints a 16.5 cm ring and 4.8 kg, and a UK retailer page agrees. The King prints 23 cm. Leave its 454 g row unused: that block also has a flavour field, and a reviewer calls the XL over 10 kg. The Meepocan bullets say a 6 inch blade, about 15 cm, with no ring. Stove-length pieces that pass a hoop belong on the kindling splitter page.

Socket, lead, and hand tools

UK mains are 230 V with a BS 1363 plug. The Lazy-Log files print 1,500 W and a lead, not 230 V. Titan's own 3,000 W FAQ limits that machine's lead to 10 m of 2.5 mm², fully uncoiled. An Arbtalk post describes a 3 kW splitter that spiked a 13 A fuse. That is one report. A short uncoiled lead is the electric case. With no power, this folder runs from a £17.99 chisel to a £124 ring and a £259.99 Garvee. The electric or manual log splitter page separates them. A fuse that blows more than once is a stop.

Guards and the wood you will burn

HSE bulletin OPSTD 2-2011 describes injuries when controls are tied, a second person clears the split, or a guard does not stop a hand. Lazy-Log reviews describe a cage that bends, jams, or was taken off. The Garvee names no guard and has no reviews. The 2008 machinery regulations cover a ram on the market. A hammer-struck ring is a hand tool. PUWER 1998 applies to employees, not a private garden by default. In England, domestic firewood sold under 2 m³ must be at or under 20% moisture, and that 2020 rule is England only. Both Lazy-Log rows share one image at £304.95.

Common questions

What tonne rating do I need for a UK wood burner?
There is no regulated tonne rating for a domestic wood burner. The Wood Burner says so, then suggests 5 to 7 tonne for a typical stove and about 20 tonne for hardwood. Those bands conflict, and they are not a standard. Match the bed or the ring to a log you own, and treat the title number as a label.
Is the number on the title a tested force?
No listing in this folder shows a lab certificate for the ton figure. The Lazy-Log 5 ton and 7 ton rows, and the Garvee 12 ton title, print a seller's claim. Where a review line exists, the scores on the comparison come from amazon.co.uk stars and review counts. They are not a force test. A row with no review line scores 0 on that formula and stays unranked.
What log length and diameter should I measure first?
Measure a log you will actually split, not a catalogue photograph. The Lazy-Log bullets say up to 520 mm long and 250 mm wide. The Kindling Cracker Original listing says a 16.5 cm ring, and the King says 23 cm. If the piece does not pass that opening, the wattage and the star line do not rescue the purchase.
Can I run a 1,500 W splitter from a normal socket?
UK sockets are 13 A at 230 V, but the Lazy-Log files print 1,500 W and a lead, not 230 V. Titan's 3,000 W model limits its own lead to 10 m of 2.5 mm², fully uncoiled. Keep this lead short, and ask an electrician if the run is long or the fuse blows more than once.
Is a kindling ring the same purchase as a hydraulic ram?
No. A ring takes a short piece that fits 16.5 cm or 23 cm, and you strike it with your own hammer. A ram pushes a log onto a wedge along a bed. The Original at £124.00 has 4.8 from 8,562 ratings. The Lazy-Log 7 ton at £304.95 has 3.8 from 65, including early failures. They are different jobs with different evidence.
Why do the 5 ton and 7 ton Lazy-Log rows share a price and a photo?
Both are £304.95, with the same 1,500 W, the same 520 mm by 250 mm bed, the same cycle and the same image. Only the 7 ton file has reviews, at 3.8 from 65. The 5 ton file has none. Do not borrow those comments, and do not treat the shared photo as proof they are one machine.
