How to use an electric chainsaw

Updated: 22 October 2026

The first pull of the trigger is not the start of safe work. It is the moment after oil, tension, and the chain brake have been checked with the power isolated. Whether you unboxed a 12 m Hyundai corded saw or a 6 inch battery mini, this sequence applies before you cut. The [electric chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/electric-chainsaw) lists which models name a brake, which ship an empty oil bottle, and which listings disagree with themselves. Peter F. set this order from those listings and from HSE and Electrical Safety First guidance, without a lab cut. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What to put on and where to stand

HSE’s tree-work PPE page lists a helmet, hearing protection, a visor, gloves, leg protection to BS EN 381-5, and chainsaw boots to BS EN ISO 17249 for ground work. Those are not optional because the saw plugs in or runs on a battery. Electrical Safety First adds dry weather, no ladder, and both hands on the handles. Clear the area so the lead is not in the cut path on corded tools, and so children and pets are not behind you. Stand to the side of the bar, not in the line of kickback, and keep an escape path if the cut binds. Clothing limits injury. It does not make a blunt chain safe. Paid work, or a tree on or near a highway, needs the competence HSE describes for work on or in a tree. That is not a licence sold with a garden saw.

Oil and chain tension before the motor runs

Unplug the saw or remove the battery before you touch the chain. Fill the tank with bar-and-chain oil. Engine oil is the wrong viscosity, and most of these boxes do not include oil. SEESII lists an empty bottle. Automatic oilers on Hyundai, Oregon, and DOVAMAN still need a filled tank. Manual minis need oil pumped while the chain runs. STIHL’s UK advice, sound as a principle, is that a cool chain sits snug under the bar and still moves by hand. Retension after a few cuts. Tool-free adjusters on Oregon, Hyundai, and DOVAMAN still need that warm check. UK Hyundai reviews describe slack and thrown chains when it is skipped. If the chain will not move with the power on, the brake may be engaged. Rule that out before you call it a motor fault.

Brake, trigger lock, and the cable

Test the chain brake with the power off, as the manual describes. The brake must stop the chain when it is engaged. GEARPASS reviews in this comparison dispute whether the brake works as fitted. If yours feels wrong, stop and resolve it before cutting. Lock-off switches prevent accidental trigger pulls. They are not a substitute for a working brake. On corded saws, route the cable behind you and keep it clear of the bar tip. Do not leave an extension reel coiled under load. Unwind it fully, use an RCD-protected outdoor socket, and put the saw away in the rain. Water and mains power do not mix. Battery saws lose the trip hazard of the flex and keep the same chain hazards. Wet hands and slippery ground are still a reason to stop.

When you put the saw down

Stop for overhead lines within 10 metres, for hung-up or windblown timber you cannot read, and for a brake, handle, or cable that is already damaged. GEARPASS UK text includes a snapped handle on sleepers. Stop for any cut that is really felling toward a building or road. Unplug or remove the battery before you clear a jam. Never wrench the chain while the circuit is live. Buck rounds on a sawhorse, not between your boots. Support and diameter sit on the electric chainsaw for logs page. Store the saw with the scabbard on and the cord loosely coiled. Sharpen or replace a dull chain before the next session. Soil contact blunts teeth quickly in UK reviews of Hyundai and Oregon. SEESII needs manual oil while the chain runs. Remove batteries for storage, use the charger’s UK plug, and unplug a corded saw at the wall when you walk away.

Common questions

Why will a new electric chainsaw not cut?
Often the chain brake is on, the chain is over-tight, or the bar-oil tank is empty. Check those three with the power isolated before you assume a motor fault. Less often the chain was fitted backwards. Match the cutter direction to the manual, then release the brake and try again.
What oil do I put in an electric chainsaw?
Bar-and-chain oil sold for saws, not cooking oil and not engine oil, unless the manual explicitly allows otherwise. These listings do not. Automatic oilers still need a filled tank. SEESII’s bottle arrives empty and the oiling is manual.
How tight should the chain be?
Snug on the underside of the bar, and still movable by hand when the chain is cool. Recheck after the first warm cuts. There is no single millimetre figure here that covers every ASIN. Follow the handbook for that saw, then the warm check.
Can I use an electric chainsaw in the rain?
No for corded use. Electrical Safety First expects dry weather. Wet conditions also increase slip, even on a battery tool. Put the saw away rather than finishing the last round in the rain.
Do I need chainsaw trousers at home?
HSE lists leg protection for ground chainsaw work, to BS EN 381-5, plus chainsaw boots to BS EN ISO 17249. Home use is not a waiver from a sharp chain. Electric power does not change that.
Should I stand on a ladder with a chainsaw?
No. Electrical Safety First excludes ladder work, and both hands belong on the handles. If the branch is out of reach from the ground, that cut is outside this garden sequence.
When do I stop and call someone else?
Stop for a damaged brake, handle, or cable, for overhead lines within 10 metres, and for hung-up stems. Felling toward a building, road, or neighbour is arborist work, not a reason to buy a longer bar.
Do I need a chainsaw certificate in my own garden?
Not to own a garden saw and trim your own shrubs. Paid or professional tree work brings training expectations under work-equipment rules. HSE describes a certificate of competence for work on or in a tree. That is separate from a domestic tidy-up.
