Corded vs cordless chainsaw

Updated: 22 October 2026

Both types appear as an electric chainsaw on amazon.co.uk, so the difference looks like brand preference until you notice that one tool always wants a socket and the other always wants a charged pack. The [electric chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/electric-chainsaw) mixes twelve listings from 6 inch minis to 16 inch corded saws. This page holds one decision: when the cable wins, when a battery wins, and why a 6 inch kit is not the cordless version of a 2400 W log saw. Peter F. compared the listing fields and did not lab-test runtime. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

When the socket is the right power source

Corded saws pull 230 V for as long as the circuit holds, which suits a log pile beside the house where you pause between rounds and do not want a pack to fade mid-cut. Hyundai HYC2400E states a 12 m cable, the longest lead here. DOVAMAN DCS01A states 6 m. Hyundai HYC1600E states 3 m. Oregon CS1400 does not print a cable length, so reach is unknown until you unbox it. Do not copy a 6 m Oregon length from a third-party article. The larger corded trio lists watt figures in the two-thousands, on 14 or 16 inch bars. Electrical Safety First still wants a UK plug, an RCD-protected outdoor supply, a fully unwound reel, the cable behind you, and dry weather. Expert Reviews’ general guidance, not a test of these listings, favours mains when the cut is larger or the session runs longer, which matches UK reviews of the corded Hyundai and Oregon saws on firewood. If the timber is next to the garage, corded is the default.

When a battery is the right power source

Battery saws exist where dragging a flex is worse than swapping a pack or waiting on a charger. NovorikX includes one 4.0 Ah pack on a 25 cm bar at about £89.98. Sukumo’s title lists two 5.0 Ah packs on 12 inches, with only four UK ratings. GEARPASS claims 16 inches and two 4.5 Ah packs, with eleven scores and brake disputes in UK text. Which? reported roughly 12 minutes average runtime on the cordless saws they tested, with charge times from 40 to 150 minutes. That is Which?’s set, not a measured runtime for SINPY or SEESII here. It is a useful limit on all-afternoon-on-one-pack marketing. Two batteries help when one can charge while you cut. A single NovorikX pack is a weak plan for a long pile. Mid cordless bars still need oil, tension checks, and PPE. Choose battery when the lead cannot reach safely, not because a 6 inch mini will behave like a 16 inch corded saw.

A mini saw is not a cordless 16 inch saw

Supstable, SEESII, and SINPY kits near £40 to £50 sit at 6 to 8 inches. SEESII’s 9,000-plus ratings describe that mini class, not the Oregon CS1400. Supstable’s shared 5,000-plus star lines are not proof that a 12 inch S3 Apex saw has the same UK story as an 8 inch kit. A battery watt bullet, including 3900 W on Sukumo, is not 2400 W from the wall. For firewood, compare Hyundai HYC2400E, DOVAMAN, and Oregon on cable and review count. For apple branches, compare mini kits on bar length and whether the oil bottle is empty. Petrol still covers all-day farm firewood in Which?’s petrol-versus-cordless piece, when neither electric option lasts the session. Named fits are on the best electric chainsaw page.

Measure from the socket to the wood

Hyundai HYC1600E at about £59.50 sits between the classes: corded, with a 14 inch bar and a 3 m cable. It is useful for small rounds close to the house, and it is not a stand-in for 12 m of reach or for a mini pruner’s portability. If you are unsure which side you are on, measure from the outdoor socket to the furthest cut and add 2 m of slack for moving around the sawhorse. If that sum exceeds your longest stated lead, a battery or a rated extension enters the picture. Extension use returns you to RCD protection and a fully unwound reel, as Electrical Safety First sets out. Bar-length teaching stays on the electric chainsaw buying guide.

Common questions

Is a cordless saw an electric chainsaw?
Yes in retailer categories. The buying decision still splits by bar length and by whether a socket can reach the wood. The word electric covers a 6 inch pruner and a 16 inch corded log saw. Those are not the same tool.
Which is better for a small garden with an outdoor socket?
Corded, if the wood fits a 14–16 inch bar and the lead reaches without a tangle across paths. A mini battery saw is for limbs. It is not a substitute for the corded trio on rounds beside the house.
Will a battery last a log pile?
These listings do not print a reliable runtime for each ASIN. Plan breaks, use a second pack if the box includes one, and treat Which?’s roughly 12 minute average, on the cordless saws they tested, as a check on all-afternoon slogans. Charge times in that piece ran from 40 to 150 minutes.
How long a cable do the corded saws have?
Three metres on the Hyundai HYC1600E, 6 m on the DOVAMAN DCS01A, and 12 m on the Hyundai HYC2400E. Oregon CS1400 does not state a cable length in this comparison. Do not borrow a figure from another retailer’s article.
Is a 6 inch cordless the same decision as a 16 inch cordless?
No. Six inches is pruning. GEARPASS at 16 inches, with eleven ratings and brake disputes, is a thin mid tier. It is not comparable with SEESII’s mini except that both run on a battery. Match the bar to the wood first.
Do I still need an RCD if I buy cordless?
The RCD question applies to corded use, including any extension reel, which should be fully unwound. Battery saws still need oil, a brake check, dry weather, and the same chain PPE. Losing the flex does not remove kickback.
When is petrol still the other option?
When the session outlasts battery swaps, or when the work is sustained firewood away from any socket. Which?’s petrol-versus-cordless piece is the pointer. That job sits outside this electric comparison.
