Electric chainsaw buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You typed electric chainsaw into amazon.co.uk and the results mixed a £40 six-inch pruner with a £115 corded log saw. Before you sort by stars, decide what you are cutting, whether a socket is in reach, and how long the bar must be. The [electric chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/electric-chainsaw) lists twelve models with prices, bars, and the conflicts in the listings. This page is the decision order: job first, power source second, bar and safety third, then what the price bands buy. Peter F. checked those amazon.co.uk fields against public UK guidance and did not lab-test the saws. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually cutting

STIGA’s UK magazine guide, a manufacturer rule of thumb rather than a test of these listings, says the guide bar should be about 2–5 cm longer than the thickest piece you cut in one pass. For regular firewood they place a 30–35 cm bar with roughly an 1800 W corded motor. Larger storm timber moves toward 35–40 cm and about 2–2.2 kW. A 6 inch bar is pruning. A 14–16 inch corded saw is where stove logs beside the house live. Felling toward a fence, road, or overhead line is trained tree work. HSE guidance on competence and PPE still applies when the saw is electric. A pile already on the ground is a sawhorse job. Shrubs are a mini-saw job. The electric chainsaw for logs page explains why review count alone sends you to the wrong tool.

Corded, cordless, or a mini saw

Corded saws draw 230 V from a UK outdoor supply. Hyundai HYC1600E is about £59.50 with 1600 W and a 14 inch bar. Hyundai HYC2400E is about £88.98 with 2400 W, a 16 inch bar, and a 12 m cable. DOVAMAN DCS01A is about £94.97 with two chains and a 6 m lead. Oregon CS1400 is about £114.42 with a stated integrated chain brake. They suit timber beside the house when an unwound lead runs through an RCD-protected socket and stays behind you. Battery saws drop the cable and add runtime and pack questions. NovorikX ships one 4.0 Ah pack on a 25 cm bar. Sukumo’s title lists two 5.0 Ah packs on 12 inches, with four UK ratings. A 1000 W bullet on a mini kit is not 2400 W from the wall. The corded vs cordless chainsaw page holds that choice: whether the wood or the socket moves.

Bar length, oil, brake, and the UK plug

Electrical Safety First expects a BS 1363 plug on cabled garden tools, an RCD outdoors, no rain, no ladder, and both hands on the handles. Chain oil is separate on most of these listings. Automatic oiling means the pump runs when the tank is filled, not that a bottle is in the box. DOVAMAN states a 150 ml tank. SEESII includes an empty bottle. Tool-free tension still needs a warm check. UK Hyundai reviews describe slack and thrown chains when it is skipped. A lock-off switch is not a chain brake. Oregon CS1400 names an integrated brake. GEARPASS claims anti-kickback, while UK reviews here say the brake was fitted the wrong way round. Follow the title when bullets disagree: HYC1600E is 1600 W and 14 inches, not the 2400 W bullets in the same listing. Oregon’s 15 amp line is not a normal 13 A UK plug. Budget a helmet, hearing protection, a visor, gloves, leg protection, and chainsaw boots with the saw.

What the listed prices are buying

Listing prices, not a live re-check, fall into three bands. About £40 to £60 covers the 6 inch SINPY and Supstable kits, SEESII at about £49.99, HYC1600E at about £59.50, and Sukumo at about £59.99 with four ratings. About £80 to £95 covers GEARPASS, HYC2400E at about £88.98, the 12 inch cordless kits near £90, and DOVAMAN at about £94.97. Oregon CS1400 is about £114.42. Oil, a sawhorse, and trousers are extra on every band. A high review count on a 6 inch listing does not lengthen the bar. Supstable headers that share 5,000-plus ratings across minis are a reason to read the bar before you buy. Named fits sit on the best-electric-chainsaw page linked below.

Common questions

What bar length do I need for garden logs?
Apply STIGA’s 2–5 cm rule to the thickest round you buck in one pass on a sawhorse, not to a standing trunk. Fourteen inches is the small end of firewood in this set. Sixteen inches with 2400 W is the mainstream log-saw band here. A 6 inch bar stays in the pruning class.
Is a six-inch cordless saw an electric chainsaw?
Yes in amazon.co.uk’s taxonomy, and it is not the same job as a 16 inch corded saw. Treat a 6 inch kit as a pruner unless the wood is already small limb size. Review count does not change the bar length.
Does the box include bar oil?
Usually no on these listings. Automatic oiling still needs the tank filled with bar-and-chain oil before the first cut. Several UK reviews say oil was missing on arrival. SEESII’s included line is an empty bottle for manual oiling.
Does a corded saw need a UK three-pin plug?
Yes for the cabled models here. Electrical Safety First expects a BS 1363 plug, an outdoor socket with RCD protection, and a fully unwound extension reel. Keep the cable behind you, and do not use the saw in the rain.
Why do two wattage figures appear on one Hyundai listing?
The HYC1600E title and spec block say 1600 W and 14 inches. Other bullets in the same listing describe a 2400 W 16 inch saw. This comparison follows the title and spec block for that ASIN, not the conflicting bullets.
Should I budget for trousers and boots as well as the saw?
For ground work, HSE lists leg protection and chainsaw boots among the expected kit, with helmet, hearing protection, visor, and gloves. Electric power does not remove kickback or a blunt chain. Those items sit outside the saw’s shelf price.
Is a higher wattage bullet a faster chain?
Not reliably across corded and battery listings, and not when bullets contradict the spec block. A mini-saw wattage line is not comparable with 2400 W from the wall. Compare bar length and power source first, then read reviews for that model.
