Electric chainsaw oil

Updated: 22 October 2026

The mini saw arrived with a tiny tank. Electric chainsaw oil is not a special fluid. If the saw has a bar and an oiler, it needs bar and chain oil. A battery does not oil the rail. This page covers a short session, why 50 ml is a poor weekend supply, and which listings mention electric or battery saws. The bottles are in the [chainsaw oil comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/chainsaw-oil). The card test is on [how to fill chainsaw oil](/hub/forestry-tools/chainsaw-oil/sub/chainsaw-oil-how-to-fill). Peter F. did not lab-test these oils. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Electric saws and bar lubrication

Only the handbook knows which saw you own. Some light pruners have no oil tank. Do not invent one. Most electric and cordless saws that look like a small petrol saw do have a tank and a pump, and a dry bar blues in the same way. Confirm oil on the chain before you trust the cut. A quiet motor is not a wet rail. An empty kit bottle, often about 50 ml, is one or two fills, not a season. Use bar and chain oil. Do not use two-stroke mix or oil drained from a car. INDG317’s warning on discarded engine oil still applies to a battery saw. If you cannot see a cap, read the manual. Hand-oiling a pumped bar is a guess.

How much oil you will use

There is no millilitres-per-hour rate on these listings, and a 20-minute prune is not a morning of firewood. Check the level when you change a battery. Oil left after three short sessions means the sessions were short. A dry tank at the second battery, with dusty chips, means stop until oil is on the bar. The test is a brief run over light card. Store a partly used litre upright, capped, and away from where you start a petrol tool. We have no shelf-life test, so follow a date on the can and do not pour contaminated oil into a ditch. Nothing here proves one chemistry attacks plastic tanks. A blank compatibility line means the row was silent, not that the oil is banned. Pack size is on the chainsaw oil buying guide.

50 ml versus 1 litre

These are the October 2026 figures. DD teck 50 ml (B0CBSL9GWN) is £4.49, or £89.80 per litre, 4.6 from 750 reviews. The 100 ml bottle is £6.29, or £62.90 per litre, with the same 750 and the same rank, so count 750 once. The nozzles are £6.49 for 100 ml (4.9 from 46, viscosity only High) and £5.29 for 50 ml (£105.80 per litre, 4.7 from 21, 15W-40). All four say mineral and biodegradable. That clash makes them top-ups, not bio recommendations. Oregon’s 1 litre is £11.13, states petrol and electric, and has 4.8 from 13,667 reviews. Three 50 ml bottles cost £13.47 for 150 ml, more money than that litre and a seventh of the oil. Carlube at £3.69 per litre has ISO 220 and a blank compatibility field. Rotatech at £4.40 per litre mentions electric or battery saws, and it is too much oil if the mini saw is the only cutter.

Oils in this comparison that mention your saw

Decant Oregon’s 1 litre if you want a biodegradable claim and a large review count. Reviews mention electric and mini saws, and the spout, so use a funnel. The listed 250 g does not match a litre. Trust the title. Rotatech at £21.99 mentions electric or battery saws and wins per litre only if you will use 5 litres. Skip it for four cuts a year. Buy 50 ml or 100 ml when the tank is empty and the litre is elsewhere. Prefer 100 ml, because £62.90 per litre beats £89.80 and £105.80, and prefer 15W-40 on the 50 ml nozzle over High if the handbook is silent. Skip all four when a site rule needs a clear bio oil. Stihl and Liqui Moly rows leave compatibility blank, so match the handbook. A short bar still blues if the first fill does not throw.

Common questions

Do cordless chainsaws need bar oil?
Yes, when the saw has a bar-oil tank and a pump. The battery runs the motor. It does not lubricate the chain. A handbook that says there is no oiler is the exception. Fill the cap with bar and chain oil and confirm a film on the rail before you cut.
How often should I fill oil on a mini saw?
When the tank is low, and each time you change a battery. We have no hours-per-fill figure. A 50 ml pack is about one or two small fills, so it disappears over a weekend of pruning. Keep a litre in the shed and decant it. If the bar is already blue, stop before the next branch.
Is the oil the same as for petrol saws?
Yes, unless the handbook names a grade. Oregon states petrol and electric. Rotatech and the DD teck bottles mention electric or battery saws. Two-stroke mix is still engine fuel and does not belong in the oil tank. Pick bio or mineral for the site, and pick the volume for how often you cut.
Are small nozzle bottles worth it?
As a top-up you can carry, yes. As your only supply, no. The 50 ml bottle is £89.80 per litre and the 50 ml nozzle is £105.80, against £11.13 for Oregon and £3.69 for Carlube. Three 50 ml bottles cost £13.47 and hold 150 ml. Keep the litre with the charger.
What if the kit only included an empty oil bottle?
Fill it with bar and chain oil before the first cut. An empty bottle is not a secret fluid, and it is not a sign the saw runs dry. Fifty millilitres is a fair first fill and a poor plan for the next weekends. Buy a litre that matches the handbook, keep the kit bottle as a top-up, and do the card check once.
