Biodegradable chainsaw oil UK

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are cutting in a garden that slopes toward a ditch, or on a job where the site rules mention the ground, and the bottle either says biodegradable or it does not. This page is the UK choice between biodegradable chainsaw oil and mineral-style bar oil: when the cheaper oil is enough, and what a bio line on an amazon.co.uk listing actually promises. The ranked table is the [chainsaw oil comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/chainsaw-oil). Peter F. used listing fields, Stihl’s UK BioPlus page, and public guidance, and did not lab-test biodegradation. When mineral oil is enough

Mineral bar oil is the right spend on dry ground when you wipe spills and nobody has asked for a biodegradable grade. Carlube at £3.69 a litre (ISO 220, anti-fling, 4.7 from 142) and ForestPlus at £5.97 per litre (10W-40, 4.8 from 798) leave oil type empty. Buy them as conventional bar oil. Trust the can if it says bio. Do not assume these ASINs meet a site rule from our fields. Shed firewood on a farm track, with spills wiped into a rag, is the Carlube pattern. Move off mineral for a garden, a watercourse, or a contract that names biodegradable chain oil. Bio oil does not let you tip the dregs into the ditch. Viscosity is on the chainsaw oil buying guide.

What biodegradable claims mean

A biodegradable claim means the seller says the oil breaks down faster than straight mineral oil. It does not mean you may pour it into a stream, a drain, or the soil. Waste still goes to a household recycling centre or a licensed collector, and council rules differ. HSE guidance covers lubrication and discarded engine oil. It does not make bio oil compulsory for every UK garden. We repeat a test name only where the source states it. Stihl’s UK BioPlus page refers to OECD 301 B. Our row for ASIN B001J55WY4 says biodegradable at £17.89, 4.7 from 1,203, and does not print that line. Oregon (B002X3IDBK) says biodegradable at £11.13, 4.8 from 13,667, with no OECD method. Liqui Moly Bio and Rotatech say biodegradable without an OECD code in the fields we stored. DD teck puts mineral and bio on the same row. That clash is not OECD 301 B.

Performance, cold weather, and consumption

Bio oil still has to stay on the chain. Oregon and Rotatech claim anti-fling. Liqui Moly Bio lists 10W-30 and a 318°C flash point, with no anti-fling line in our fields. BioPlus shows neither anti-fling nor an ISO grade. Carlube claims anti-fling and lists ISO 220. None of that is a cold-room result from us. On a frosty morning, a short run over card shows a film, or you stop. A grade is a buying clue, not a promise the pump will meter that oil at −5°C. We will not print a figure for bio using more oil, because we do not have one. Oil that mists off leaves the bar dry, which is a pump and flow question, not a reason to blame one chemistry. Biodegradable does not mean edible, and it is not a licence to spill.

Choosing from this comparison

Choose the site first, then price per litre, then review depth. Oregon at £11.13 is the biodegradable litre with 13,667 reviews. Liqui Moly at £12.49 is the bio row with 10W-30 and 2,369 reviews. BioPlus at £17.89 is the Stihl name, with OECD 301 B on Stihl’s UK page. Rotatech at £21.99 is £4.40 per litre, 4.8 from 953, if you will use most of the 5 litres. Carlube at £3.69 is the best value conventional litre, with 142 reviews, oil type unstated, and cap-leak notes. ForestPlus at £5.97 per litre has no bio claim. Leave DD teck out of this decision: £62.90 to £105.80 per litre, and mineral plus bio on the same row. Named picks are on best chainsaw oil UK.

Common questions

Is biodegradable chainsaw oil mandatory in the UK?
No general UK rule in the sources we used forces every owner onto biodegradable bar oil. HSE expects a working oiler and warns against discarded engine oil. It does not ban mineral oil on private firewood. A contract or a site near water can still require a bio grade. Buy Oregon, Liqui Moly Bio, Stihl BioPlus, or Rotatech, and do not rely on a blank oil-type field.
Can bio oil go into streams?
No. The claim is faster breakdown if a spill happens, not permission to pour. Keep bio oil out of streams, ditches, and drains, and take waste to a household recycling centre or a licensed collector. Council acceptance varies. Mineral oil persists longer on the same ground. Bio is the better choice beside water, not a disposal method.
How does bio oil behave in cold weather?
We have no cold-chamber result. Printed grades are 10W-30 on Liqui Moly Bio and Rotatech, 10W-40 on ForestPlus and Synthplus, ISO 220 on Carlube, and a blank on Oregon and BioPlus. On a frosty start, run the card check. If the oil will not throw, stop. A bio claim does not tell you the pour point.
Which comparison products claim to be biodegradable?
Oregon at £11.13, Liqui Moly Bio at £12.49, Stihl BioPlus at £17.89, and Rotatech at £4.40 per litre. DD teck also ticks biodegradable while the oil-type field says mineral, so that is not a clear bio choice. Carlube, ForestPlus, and Synthplus do not carry the claim on the fields we stored. Stihl’s UK page is the source here that names OECD 301 B.
Is bio mineral on a cheap listing truly biodegradable?
Treat it as a mixed label. DD teck is classed as mineral and also claims biodegradable, at £62.90 to £105.80 per litre. That is not Stihl’s OECD 301 B line, and it is not a row that simply says biodegradable, which is what Oregon, Liqui Moly, and Rotatech show. If a site rule needs bio, buy one of those.
