Chainsaw bar oil guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a saw, a pile of logs, and more than one cap on the body. The fluid in the bar tank is what keeps the chain on the rail. This chainsaw bar oil guide covers which lubricant belongs in the oil tank, how to read viscosity or anti-fling on an amazon.co.uk listing, and when a 5 litre can beats a 50 ml bottle. The [chainsaw oil comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/chainsaw-oil) ranks the bottles priced in October 2026. Peter F. used those listing fields and HSE INDG317, and did not lab-test the oils. What bar and chain oil is for

Bar and chain oil is a thick lubricant for the guide bar and the chain. It is meant to stay on fast metal, cool the rail, and cut wear. On a petrol saw it has its own tank. Two-stroke mix is fuel, made to burn. Pouring mix into the oil tank, or bar oil into the fuel, swaps those jobs. HSE INDG317 warns against discarded engine oil: it throws poorly, and repeated skin contact is a health concern. That is safe-work advice, not a brand approval. Oil from a sump bottle looks wet for a minute, then the rail dries, the chips go dusty, and the bar can blue. Stop and refill with bar and chain oil. Use the handbook grade if it names one. If it only says bar and chain oil, that family is the right one. Engine oil is outside it.

Mineral, bio, and semi-synthetic

Read the words on the row, because the type field is sometimes empty. Carlube at £3.69 a litre and ForestPlus at £5.97 per litre leave oil type blank, so buy them as conventional bar oil unless the can says otherwise. Biodegradable rows here are Oregon at £11.13, Liqui Moly Bio at £12.49, Stihl BioPlus at £17.89, and Rotatech at £4.40 per litre. Synthplus at £11.99 is semi-synthetic and does not claim biodegradable on the fields we hold. Bio oil shortens how long a spill persists. It does not let you tip oil into a ditch or a drain. Dry woodland with wiped spills can stay with a few pounds a litre. A garden or ground that drains toward water wants a listing that says biodegradable. That split is on the biodegradable vs mineral chainsaw oil page. Stihl’s OECD 301 B line belongs to the BioPlus page, not to every title that says bio.

Reading labels for viscosity and anti-fling

Viscosity is how thick the oil is. Carlube states ISO 220. Liqui Moly Bio and Rotatech state 10W-30. ForestPlus and Synthplus state 10W-40. One 50 ml DD teck nozzle states 15W-40. Oregon leaves viscosity blank, and one 100 ml nozzle only says High. ISO 220 and a 10W label are not the same scale. Match a handbook grade. Anti-fling, or a tackifier, is the claim that oil clings at chain speed. Oregon, Carlube, Rotatech, and the DD teck bottles state it. Stihl BioPlus, ForestPlus, Synthplus, and Liqui Moly do not. A light film on the rail after a short run means it is working. The steps are on how to fill chainsaw oil.

Choosing a pack size

Divide the shelf price by the litres. Carlube is £3.69 per litre, Rotatech £4.40, ForestPlus £5.97, Oregon £11.13, and BioPlus £17.89. DD teck 100 ml is £62.90 per litre and 50 ml is £89.80. The 50 ml nozzle reaches £105.80. A small shelf price can be the expensive way to buy oil. If you emptied two 1 litre bottles last season, plan another 2 litres. We have no litres-per-cord figure for your saw. Two Carlube-style litres are about £7.38. A £21.99 Rotatech can leaves about 3 litres in the shed. Two 50 ml bottles cost £8.98 and give you 0.1 litres. Buy 5 litres when you will use them, and 50 ml only for an empty tank on the day. The same maths for a mini saw is on electric chainsaw oil.

Common questions

Is bar oil the same as two-stroke mix?
No. Bar oil lubricates the bar and chain. Two-stroke mix is petrol blended to burn in the engine. Mix in the oil tank starves the bar, and bar oil in the fuel is the wrong fluid for the engine. Check the handbook symbols if there are two caps. An electric saw often has only an oil cap and still needs bar oil if it has an oiler.
Can I use motor oil from the garage?
HSE INDG317 says not to use discarded engine oil as a chain lubricant. It throws poorly, and repeated skin contact is a health concern. Fresh engine oil is still made for a crankcase. Use a bottle sold as bar and chain oil. Here that starts at £3.69 per litre for Carlube XPM011.
Do electric saws need special oil?
They use bar and chain oil, the same family as a petrol saw, unless the handbook names a grade. Oregon’s 1 litre states petrol and electric. Rotatech and the DD teck bottles mention electric or battery saws. A blank compatibility line is a gap in the row, not a ban. You need oil if the saw has a bar oiler.
Is ISO 220 important?
It matters when the handbook asks for that class, or when you want a number you can compare. Carlube XPM011 lists it, at £3.69 per litre, with an anti-fling claim. Other bottles list 10W-30, 10W-40, 15W-40, or nothing. Those are not interchangeable codes. If the handbook is silent, a stated grade plus a flow check beats a bottle that only says high.
How do I compare value on Amazon?
Divide the amazon.co.uk price by the litres. £4.49 for 0.05 litres is £89.80 per litre. £21.99 for 5 litres is £4.40 per litre. Carlube is the cheapest per litre here and has 142 reviews. Oregon’s bio litre has 13,667 reviews at £11.13. Use both numbers. The live price can move after 21 October 2026.
