Log jack for firewood

Updated: 22 October 2026

Firewood work on flat ground turns expensive when the chainsaw chain meets soil and grit. A timber jack is one way to keep the bar clear. STIHL’s UK firewood guidance also shows how to cut most of the way through, roll with a felling lever, and finish without any jack. The [felling jack comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/felling-jack) lists five amazon.co.uk tools from 549 g to 7.53 kg. This page follows the firewood sequence. It is not a felling lesson. Peter F. used STIHL’s UK method and the listing text, and did not time a cord of wood. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Why the chain goes dull

Soil and small stones at the kerf strip chrome from cutters faster than clean wood alone. STIHL’s UK article on cutting firewood says you may cut on the ground only if the chain does not enter the soil. Otherwise you lift or roll. Husqvarna’s cross-cut page adds a side stance and reading compression so the bar does not bind while you chase clearance. Dirt is not the only cost. A bar that rocks into earth raises kickback risk when the nose meets something unexpected, which INDG317 treats separately from the lift method. Firewood time therefore includes sharpening, not just the price of a jack. Two honest routes follow. Change the cut sequence so the chain never hunts the ground, or raise the stem with a timber jack in a real mass class. Propping the stem on another loose round is not a route STIHL’s firewood piece recommends. Unstable supports fail sideways.

Cut three-quarters and roll

STIHL’s UK method for flat ground cuts about three-quarters through the trunk, rolls the stem with a felling lever to present a clean face, then finishes the cut. Chock the log so it cannot roll toward your feet before you start. Metre lengths appear in STIHL’s text as a handling example, not a UK legal limit. They simply make later splits easier to move. You need permission before processing a fallen tree. STIHL UK says check permission. This page does not invent a statute or a licence section. If the stem is not yours to cut, stop. The roll wants a cant hook or lever with enough hook span for your diameter. ISTA’s single review warns the hook was too small for a larger tree on the 80 cm listing. If the roll fails, do not force the cut in the dirt. That failure is where a timber jack earns its keep. Husqvarna’s tension guidance still applies after a partial cut. Rolling changes the attitude of the log. Read top versus bottom compression again before the saw spins.

When a timber jack earns the lift

Rolling fails when the stem is heavy, awkwardly tapered, or trapped against another log. A timber jack foot raises the round enough to pass the bar underneath without grazing soil. UK reviewers on the steel 51-inch jack describe chainsaw clearance on logs up to about nine inches, with big logs difficult yet slightly lifted. That is the realistic band for that listing, not a promise for every butt. Insaga claims 25.4 cm of lift and a grip up to 53 cm in bullets, at 7.53 kg and about £117.99, with 4.9 from 21 on the header and mostly United States review headers in the saved set. Treat lift and diameter as seller claims you may check once with a tape. Forest Master’s longer lifter is dealer scale at about 11 kg and £94.90, not a row here. Do not paste other brands’ lift blurbs onto the generic listings at 549 g and 551 g. Those two print no height and no reviews, and they fail the mass check for firewood leverage. For UK-written soil clearance on modest rounds, start with the steel jack on best timber jack UK. For the heaviest stated lift, with US-heavy stars, consider Insaga. Use ISTA as a roll lever, not as proof of a stand lift.

After the metre lengths

Once rounds are short enough to split, STIHL puts the pieces on a sawhorse and keeps the running saw off the horse itself. Damp wood dries faster in smaller sections, STIHL notes in passing. This is not a splitting-axe guide. Full PPE for the saw session, helmet through boots to HSE’s BS EN list, is on how to use a timber jack. Choose the aid before the job, even when the aid is optional because you rolled instead of jacked.

Common questions

Do I have to buy a log jack to cut firewood?
No. STIHL’s three-quarter cut and roll uses a felling lever to turn the stem and finish on a clean face. A timber jack foot is the alternative when the stem will not roll, not a requirement for every flat-ground firewood job.
How do I turn the stem if I only have a felling lever?
Cut about three-quarters of the way through, chock the log, hook it, and roll it until a clean face is up. Then finish the cut. That is STIHL UK’s flat-ground sequence. Read the tension again after the roll, because the compression side can change.
How high does the log need to be?
High enough that the cutters skip the soil. UK text on the steel jack describes modest diameters near nine inches lifted clear, with no printed height. Insaga’s bullets claim 25.4 cm after clamping. That figure is seller text, not a UK measurement you can copy onto other listings.
Can I rest the stem on another log?
STIHL warns against unstable props. A loose round can fail sideways while the saw is in the kerf. Chocks plus a controlled roll, or a timber jack foot on firm ground, are the patterns the guidance supports.
What length should firewood be?
STIHL uses metre marks as a handling example so later splits are easier to move. Choose the length that fits your stove and your back. This page does not invent a legal length.
Do I need permission to cut a fallen tree?
STIHL UK says check permission first. Confirm the landowner agrees before you process a windfall that is not yours. This page does not set a diameter limit or a licence rule.
