Einhell chainsaw buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk comparing Einhell chainsaws, and the shelf price on a Solo listing rarely tells you whether a battery is in the box or whether the bar in the title matches the cut you will get. Count your Power X-Change packs, match bar length in centimetres to the wood, then read stars. Live prices and every ASIN sit in the [Einhell chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/einhell-chainsaw). When the choice is already one pack or two, the [Einhell 18V vs 36V chainsaw](/hub/forestry-tools/einhell-chainsaw/sub/einhell-chainsaw-18v-vs-36v) page carries the chain-speed gap. Peter F. used the saved UK listings. This is not a laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Count the batteries first

Cordless models in this set sit on Power X-Change. An 18 V saw needs one pack. A 36 V GP-LC needs two of the same 18 V batteries fitted together, and those packs still run 18 V tools alone. Solo means the body only. The GE-LC 18/25 Li Solo at £79.99 and both GP-LC Solo listings ship without a battery or charger. The GE-LC 18/25 kit lists a 3.0 Ah pack and charger at £89.99. The GE-PS 18/15 kit includes a 2.5 Ah pack, charger, spare chain, and bag, and it is a short-bar set. One pack will not run a 36 V body.

Match the bar to the wood

Einhell’s UK accessories pages give rough bands: about 15–20 cm for pruning, 21–30 cm for medium garden wood, and 31–40 cm for thicker material. They are rules of thumb. The GE-PS 12.5 cm cut and the FORTEXXA 18/20 are shrub work, covered on the Einhell chainsaw for pruning page. The GE-LC 18/25 family sits near 22–25 cm. The FORTEXXA 18/30 is the step toward 30 cm on one 18 V pack. The GP-LC 36/35 at £129.95 bare lists a 35 cm bar, a 33 cm cut, and up to 15 m/s with two packs. The GP-LC 36/40 at £214.98 claims up to 19 m/s and a 38 cm cut in the bullet against a 40 cm title.

When the title mixes centimetres and inches

Several FORTEXXA titles print centimetres and inches that disagree. Thirty centimetres is not fourteen inches, and twenty centimetres is not ten inches. The 18/30 bullet gives a 30 cm bar and a 27 cm cut while the title also says 14 inch. A UK buyer measured nearer twelve inches. The 18/20 pairs 20 cm with 10 inch wording, and reviewers say it felt smaller. Trust the centimetre bullet and the cutting-length line, not the inch half. einhell.co.uk list prices can sit above the amazon.co.uk price for the same model.

Mains if you have a socket and no packs

The GH-EC 1835 and GH-EC 2040 both list at £79.00, with no Power X-Change spend. The 1835 names a 1,800 W motor and a 35 cm bar. The 2040 steps to 2,000 W and 40 cm in the title. Both list a 160 ml oil tank, a chain brake, and tool-free tension, at a little over five kilograms. UK reviews on the 2040 praise log cuts on felled wood, and they repeat that the plug disconnects when the cable is tugged. If the lead falls out, stop. Away from the house, with two packs already owned, that mains price can be a false economy.

What the price still does not include

Bar and chain oil is not filled. HSE INDG317 warns against used engine oil in the lubrication system. Read the manual’s minimum mark before the first cut. A second 18 V pack is not in a Solo box, so it belongs in the price of a 36 V saw. HSE’s ground-work page lists head, hearing, eye, and leg protection. A chain brake reduces kickback and does not remove it. In England, GOV.UK describes a garden felling exemption with volume limits. A Tree Preservation Order can still apply. Check both before you buy a longer bar for tree work.

Common questions

Does Solo mean no battery?
Yes on the cordless listings in this set. Solo titles are bare tools. Kits such as the GE-LC 18/25 with a 3.0 Ah pack, or the GE-PS pruning kit, include a battery and charger in the included-components line.
Do I need one Power X-Change pack or two?
One pack runs 18 V saws. Both GP-LC 36 V models need two compatible 18 V packs at the same time. One pack in a Twin-Pack saw will not run the tool.
Is 30 cm the same as 14 inches?
No. Treat mixed titles as a warning. Use the centimetre bullet and the cutting-length line, and read UK reviews that discuss bar expectations when the inch figure is wrong.
Is a 25 cm bar enough for firewood?
Many UK reviewers use the GE-LC class on garden trunks and stove lengths if they let the chain work and accept slower progress than petrol. Wide hardwood rounds may need a longer bar, or a 36 V saw if you already own two packs.
When is the 2,000 W mains saw the cheaper start?
When you have a reliable outdoor socket, no Power X-Change packs, and ground-level cuts. Compare the GH-EC pair in the main table with the Solo plus oil plus any battery you would otherwise buy.
Do I need a felling licence for a garden tree in England?
GOV.UK explains when a licence is required and describes exemptions that can apply to garden trees, with volume limits. A Tree Preservation Order can still restrict the work. Check both before you fell.
What oil has to be bought separately?
Bar and chain oil for the tank, or for the GE-PS applicator. These listings do not ship a filled oil supply. Do not use waste engine oil in the lubrication system.
