What size felling wedge

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing between 5.5, 6, 8 and 10 inch packs on amazon.co.uk, and the sticker length is not the same question as whether this tree will fall where you want. Length buys lift and kerf reach. Hinge width, lean and training decide whether you should fell at all. The [felling wedge comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/felling-wedge) lists which ASIN sells which lengths. This page maps those inches to use, without treating an American diameter chart as UK law. Peter F. used the listing lengths and Husqvarna UK's lift note, and did not measure these wedges in timber. Length is about lift

Husqvarna UK says the right wedge supplies the lift the tree needs, and that one, two or three wedges may be required. The felling-tools page quotes about 50 to 60 mm of lifting height. That is vertical movement from the technique, not the full height of a 10 inch piece of plastic in the kerf. Use a wedge long enough to enter the back cut, and wide enough to hold the bar clear. A longer wedge does not move a heavy lean if the notch and hinge are wrong. US articles sometimes pair 5.5 inch with about a 12 inch diameter. That is an American rule of thumb, not a UK standard. On these listings, 5.5 inch is about 140 mm, 8 inch about 203 mm, and 10 inch about 254 mm. STIHL UK sells polyamide wedges at 18.5, 23 and 26 cm in a different line.

The lengths these listings actually sell

kuzuryu B0F894PWPX is six 5.5 inch wedges only, aimed at saplings and brush. QWORK B0F6LVTZLP is four 6 inch pieces. ORETG45 B08CZ47SKT prints 5 inch and 130 x 70 x 50 mm, and the piece count is not stated. AR-PRO B087CR2TG8 and B08PP2933Y each offer three 8 inch and three 5.5 inch wedges. QWORK B0F6LQQ71V offers three 6 inch and two 8 inch. Poweka B08NVNMY63 is two 10 inch wedges with a smooth reverse for overlap. LDXDRU B0GSPFHN29 names 6, 8 and 10 inch without a count per length. AR-PRO B08PNQRCCM is two each of 10, 8 and 5.5 inch. A UK review calls kuzuryu's short wedges right for thin trees. A US line in the shared AR-PRO pool says steep plastic suits smaller trees. Those are reviewer experiences, not certified limits.

One wedge or several

Husqvarna's one-to-three wedge guidance covers real leans and a pinching back cut, not every garden stem. Poweka's bullets say two or more wedges add leverage on a larger diameter, and they describe overlapping on the smooth side. Husqvarna's against-the-lean page adds a second wedge beside the first and sometimes a third on top. Some US courses cap stacking at two. Keep both ideas in mind and stop when lift stops. Carrying only one wedge is how a bar gets pinched on the day you needed a spare. Mixed packs exist so you do not have to guess whether today is a 5.5 inch stem or an 8 inch stem. If you already own six short wedges, adding a 10 inch pair is a different purchase from another six-pack of the same length. Plastic tips chip, and wedges disappear into brash, so the count on the title is a starting stock. Reviews mention short shipments on six-packs. Check the pieces when the box arrives, especially on ASINs that share review text with a different mix.

A longer wedge is not a bigger permission

A 10 inch wedge in the bag does not certify you to fell a stem that needs a winch, a hung-up plan, or a contractor's certificate. Large diameter, a dead crown, buildings in the fall line, and the wrong lean are stop points on how to use a felling wedge. England's felling licence and tree preservation rules on GOV.UK still apply outside the exemptions. Shopping for length does not replace those checks. If you only split rounds on the ground, length inside a felling pack does not help. You need a steel splitter, not a longer piece of plastic. Hinge, lean, training and the escape route decide whether a fell is safe. Length only supplies mechanical lift.

Common questions

Is 5.5 inch enough for a garden tree?
Enough for thin stems and brush, where the kerf accepts a short wedge. kuzuryu's six-pack is 5.5 inch only, and a UK review calls that length right for thinner trees. It is the wrong only wedge when you routinely need 8 or 10 inch lift to hold the bar clear.
When do I need 8 or 10 inch?
When the shorter wedge in a mixed pack has run out of lift, or when the stem you already fell with a correct notch needs the wide pair. Poweka titles two 10 inch wedges. AR-PRO's 8 and 5.5 inch packs have no 10 inch piece. A longer sticker is still not permission for a heavier lean.
Do I need every length, or two of one length?
Mixed packs cover two bands: 5.5 with 8 inch, or 6 with 8 inch. Poweka covers two 10 inch pieces and no shorter spare. LDXDRU names 6, 8 and 10 inch without a count per length. AR-PRO's three-length pack states two of each. Verify the pieces on arrival where titles and part numbers disagree.
Can I stack a short wedge on a long one?
Overlap is described on Poweka's smooth reverse, and Husqvarna's lean guidance adds a second wedge beside the first and sometimes a third on top. Some US courses cap stacking at two. Stay inside your training. Do not add a third wedge only because the two sources disagree.
What is lift height?
Lift height is the vertical opening you gain in the kerf, not the inch length printed on the pack. Husqvarna cites about 50 to 60 mm as a ceiling for wedge lift. A 10 inch wedge is about 254 mm of plastic. Most of that length is not 254 mm of lift.
