14 inch chainsaw for firewood

Updated: 22 October 2026

A 14 inch electric saw is for shortening stove logs that are already on the ground, not for felling a garden tree from a ladder. The [14 inch chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/14-inch-chainsaw) holds six corded and cordless listings. This page plans a woodpile session: diameter, corded continuous cut against battery time, support, lengths and oil. Peter F. used the amazon.co.uk cards and public UK sources in October 2026. This is not a laboratory test of these motors on every hardwood. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a 14 inch bar is for on a woodpile

Fourteen inches is about 35 cm of guide bar. Stiga’s UK guide puts 12–14 inch bars on firewood around 10–20 cm, with the bar a few centimetres longer than the thickest single-pass cut. Stihl’s MSA 200 page, a different saw, mentions small trees up to 25 cm. That is not a test of the Hyundai or Oregon here. Einhell states a 33 cm cutting length on a 35 cm bar. Bar length is not felling capacity. These saws are for logs already down. Shop copy that says up to 30 cm is not proof these motors were tested on every hardwood. Forest Research notes domestic pieces around 25–30 cm, with moisture toward 20–25 percent after seasoning. Splitting helps larger rounds dry. That is fuel preparation, not a horsepower figure on the card.

A session beside a socket or on a battery

A pile within a safe lead suits corded continuous cut. The HYC1600E at about £59.50 names a 3 m cable, so the session includes an outdoor extension on a 30 mA RCD. The Oregon CS1200 at about £97.29 is the other corded option, with a stated chain brake, at 4.5 from 47 ratings. Away from the socket, the HY40CCS350 includes two 4.0 Ah packs so you can rotate a charge. The HYC40LI includes one 2.5 Ah pack. One UK review reports about 15 minutes, which is a poor match for a long pile in one sitting. The Einhell body needs packs you already own. The Husqvarna 225i includes a battery and a charger, and amp-hours are not stored, so plan conservatively. The session question is whether the motor stops when the battery does.

Support, length and oil

Support the log off soil and stones. Stihl’s UK firewood method uses a sawhorse and warns against cutting into the horse. Stand to the side and keep the nose clear. Soil dulls the chain. The cross-cut sequence is on how to use a 14 inch chainsaw. Stove lengths often sit around 25–30 cm, then splitting if rounds are wide. Splitting helps drying. It does not replace a moisture check. Oil the bar before the first log. None of the six listings name oil in the box. Stated tanks are 200 ml on the HY40CCS350 and 115 ml on the Einhell. If the wood is not yours, you need the owner’s agreement. A renter needs the landlord’s. Councils can restrict chainsaw use on public land. One council page is not a rule for every authority.

What this session is not

This session is logs already down. It is not ladder work and not felling a standing tree. In England a garden is generally outside the Forestry Act 1967 section 9 felling licence. A Tree Preservation Order or a conservation area can still need consent. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not covered by that England page alone. Leaning trees, hung-up trees and cuts off the ground need a trained operator. HSE lists hearing protection to BS EN 352 for chainsaw ground work. A quiet-cordless claim is not a reason to leave it off.

Common questions

Can a 14 inch chainsaw cut stove logs?
Yes, for logs already down, within a diameter the bar can pass in one supported cut. Fourteen inches is about 35 cm of guide bar, and Einhell states a 33 cm cutting length on a 35 cm bar. It is not a felling saw for a standing tree, and it is not a tool for work from a ladder.
How thick a log can I cut in one pass?
Plan a few centimetres less than the bar length. Einhell states 33 cm of cutting length on a 35 cm bar. Stiga’s UK band for 12–14 inch bars is regular firewood around 10–20 cm. A shop line that says up to 30 cm is not a test of these six motors on every hardwood.
Should the log be on the ground or on a sawhorse?
A sawhorse keeps the chain off soil and stones. Stihl’s UK firewood method and Electrical Safety First both point to a sawhorse, and Stihl warns against cutting into the horse. Cutting into dirt dulls the teeth quickly and raises the chance of the nose catching. Stand to the side of the log.
Will a cordless saw finish a woodpile on one charge?
Not on one small pack as a guarantee. The HYC40LI has one 2.5 Ah battery, and one UK review reports about 15 minutes. The HY40CCS350 kit includes two 4.0 Ah packs so you can rotate a charge. A corded saw avoids the mid-pile stop if a safe lead reaches the pile.
Do I need oil for a short firewood session?
Yes. Oil is not named in the included-components line for any of the six listings, and an automatic oiler still needs fluid. The HY40CCS350 states a 200 ml tank and Einhell states 115 ml. A short pile is not a reason to run the chain dry.
What if the timber might be a protected tree?
Check Tree Preservation Orders and conservation-area rules before you cut, including in a garden in England, where a felling licence is often not the issue under Forestry Act 1967 section 9. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland need their own guidance. If the wood is not yours, get the owner’s permission, and a renter needs the landlord’s agreement.
