Chainsaw for firewood

Updated: 22 October 2026

You need a chainsaw for firewood that finishes logs already on the ground, without a 6 inch bar buried in the round. Match the bar to the log and use a brake you have watched stop the chain. Güde's firewood step is the KS 450-55, a 420 mm cut, and on 21 October 2026 that listing had no featured offer on amazon.co.uk. The [Güde chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/guede-chainsaw) shows the saws that were in stock. They are other brands. Peter F. used public bar guidance and the Güde cut lengths, with no lab cut. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Match the bar to the log, not to the biggest saw

A rule of thumb is a bar a little longer than the piece you want in one pass, so the nose is not buried. Stiga's UK guide puts a 12–14 inch bar on regular firewood up to about 20–25 cm. A UK guide updated on 10 July 2026 puts most domestic rounds at 15–30 cm, with about 5 cm of spare bar. That band is the site's rule of thumb, not a Güde specification. If the log is wider than the bar, cut from both sides or split it. Do not twist the saw in the kerf. Bar choice across every job is in the Güde chainsaw buying guide.

Where the KS saws sit on that ruler

The KS 400-38 cuts to 360 mm (38 cm³, 1.4 kW, 3/8 inch, 57 links) and suits rounds nearer 15–20 cm. The KS 450-55 is about 55 cm³ and 2.3 kW, with a 420 mm cut, and Güde's line includes firewood around the house. Article 95044 uses an Oregon 3/8 inch chain, 1.3 mm, 61 links, at 22 m/s. B0CYTCWKGY had no featured offer. The KS 500-62 is 62 cm³, 480 mm, 0.325 inch, 1.5 mm, 78 links, also at 22 m/s. Marketing says 2.85 kW and a manual cell says 2.3 kW. Choose it when 420 mm buries the nose. That chain does not fit the KS 450-55. The KS 36-0 is the weak firewood choice in the range. That split is Güde petrol or cordless chainsaw.

A mini chainsaw is for brash, not for stove rounds

In-stock cordless saws are mostly 6 and 8 inch bars, plus a 25 cm NovorikX, a Sukumo whose included line says pole shears, and a 16 inch GEARPASS. A 6 inch bar, about 15 cm, can nip brash. It does not clear a 20–25 cm stove round in one pass. The GEARPASS at £85.99 is the longer cordless bar, and UK reviews say the chain brake is the wrong way round. The Hyundai HYC6200X, at £109.89, is a 20 inch petrol saw that can cross-cut domestic rounds. The brand is Hyundai, and the listing does not name chain oil or a safety control.

Cut on the ground, then stop

Support the log so the cut opens. A round on the soil pinches the bar. Stand to the side, cut with the middle of the bar, and keep the nose clear. Stop if the chain goes slack, the bar runs dry, or the brake has not been proved. Fuel, oil and tension are on how to use a Güde chainsaw. HSE treats ground work with a chainsaw as high risk. A private log pile is not the employer training duty. Helmet, hearing protection, gloves, chain-resistant trousers and boots still apply. Hire someone for felling or a hung-up stem.

Common questions

What bar length do I need for firewood?
Use a bar a little longer than the round. Stiga's UK guide suggests 12–14 inch up to about 20–25 cm. A UK guide updated on 10 July 2026 puts domestic rounds at 15–30 cm, with about 5 cm of spare bar. The KS 450-55 publishes 420 mm. That margin is the guides' advice, not Güde's.
Is the Güde KS 450-55 a firewood saw?
Yes, in the maker's description of firewood around the house: a 420 mm cut, about 55 cm³, 2.3 kW and an Oregon 3/8 inch chain at 22 m/s. Article 95044 is the chain reference. On 21 October 2026 there was no featured offer, and the page showed 3.7 from 34 ratings.
Can I cut logs with a 6 inch cordless saw?
A 6 inch bar is for brash. A 20 cm stove round is wider than that bar, so one pass buries the nose. An owner report of a thick cut is not a new specification, and the mini saws are other brands.
Should firewood be petrol or battery?
For a pile of logs, the petrol KS is the Güde side: 22 m/s and a 420 or 480 mm cut, once it is in stock. The KS 36-0 is 6 m/s and 320 mm, and the battery is extra. Which?'s 12-minute average is Which's test, not a Güde runtime. A mini saw can make kindling. It is the wrong main saw for stove rounds.
Do I need a certificate to cut my own logs?
Not for a private household cutting wood already down. HSE's certificate expectation applies to work on or in a tree, and paid work sits under training rules. Hire someone for felling, a hung-up stem, or a cut near a road or a line.
What if the log is wider than the bar?
Cut from the other side, or split the round. Do not twist the saw to lever a short bar through. If most wood is wider than the KS 450-55's 420 mm cut, the KS 500-62's 480 mm cut is the longer Güde step, and it uses a different chain.
Is the Hyundai in the table a firewood saw even though it is not Güde?
The Hyundai HYC6200X is a 20 inch petrol saw at £109.89, so the bar can cross-cut domestic rounds. It is not a KS 450-55, and the chain is not the Oregon 91P061X for article 95044. The listing does not name chain oil or a safety control.
