How to use a mini chainsaw

Updated: 22 October 2026

The oil bottle is light because it is empty, and the photos show one hand on the grip. That is the usual start with these amazon.co.uk kits, and the wrong moment to touch a branch. How to use a mini chainsaw the first time is a short sequence: battery out, bar-and-chain oil in, chain snug but still free, then both hands on the saw. Model choice stays on the [mini chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/mini-chainsaw). Peter F. used the listings and public UK safety pages on 21 October 2026. This is not a lesson from a lab cut. Before the first cut

Take the battery off before you fit or oil anything. Coopers of Stortford’s M620 instructions, dated 4 March 2024, say to wear gloves while you fit the chain. The gloves in these kits are thin, and they are not EN 381 chainsaw clothing. Eye protection, hearing protection, boots and no loose clothing still apply. Oil is required on a manual oiler and on an automatic one. The Rivlox and the CH850 ship the bottle empty. Put bar-and-chain oil in the tank. Do not use WD-40 because a review suggested it. Bar length and pack size are on the mini chainsaw buying guide.

Chain tension

A new chain stretches. Coopers, for their M620, say there should be no slack, the chain must still move, and you should retighten after the first minutes once the saw has cooled, without over-tensioning. Core Service’s note for a mains saw uses about 2–3 mm of lift. That figure is theirs, not a measurement on these ASINs. A hanging loop is too loose. A chain you cannot pull around the bar by hand, battery out, is too tight. SINPY reviews include a chain that came off and broke the cover. That is a stop: battery off, inspect the cover and the links, then retighten when the saw is cool. Do not hold the trigger to reseat a derailed chain.

Hands, lock-off and kickback

Use both hands. Stihl UK says that for the GTA 26, a 10 cm pruner with its own manual, not a manual for these kits. A one-hand photo is advertising. Keep the second hand on the auxiliary handle where the listing provides one. A lock is not a chain brake. Only the NovorikX in this set claims a dual brake. Kickback is the bar nose touching wood and the saw throwing back at you. HSE INDG317 says a chain brake reduces kickback and does not remove it. Most of these listings do not state a brake. Do not start a cut with the nose. Nests and tree preservation orders are a reason not to start. Those rules are on prune with a mini chainsaw.

When to stop

Stop when the chain leaves the bar. Battery off, then inspect the cover before you tension again. A broken cover is an inspection, not a retry. Stop when the motor cuts out and the housing is hot. One Angseen SY-LT05 review describes a hot cut-out at about 15 minutes. Let the saw cool. Do not bypass a cut-out. Stop when the next cut needs a ladder or a reach above your shoulder. Stihl UK says not to use a chainsaw on a ladder or in a tree without the qualifications, and HSE treats work on or in a tree as a competence question. A CHEOAR line that you do not need a ladder is not working-at-height guidance. Call a tree contractor for a crown you cannot reach from the ground, for wood hung up, and for any trunk.

Common questions

Do I have to oil a battery mini chainsaw?
Yes. Cordless only describes the motor. The bar and chain still need bar-and-chain oil, on a manual oiler and on a claimed automatic one. Several bottles arrive empty. If you cut dry, reviews in this set already describe the chain coming off.
What oil goes in the tank?
Bar-and-chain oil, from a bottle sold for that job. Listings that mention a bottle do not fill it, and they do not name a brand you must use. Do not follow a review that suggests WD-40. An automatic oiler still has a tank you fill before the first cut.
How tight should the chain be?
Snug, and still free to move by hand with the battery removed. Coopers’ M620 instructions say no slack, then a retighten after the first minutes once the saw is cool. Core Service’s mains-saw note uses about 2–3 mm of lift. That figure is theirs, not a setting confirmed on these ASINs. A hanging loop is too loose. A chain you cannot pull by hand is too tight.
Why did the chain come off on the first cut?
Usually the new chain was slack, dry, or both. SINPY reviews include a chain that came off and broke the cover. Switch the battery off, inspect the cover, oil the bar, and set the tension again once the saw is cool. Do not hold the trigger to throw the chain back onto the sprocket.
Can I use it one-handed?
No. Keep both hands on the saw. Stihl UK states that for the GTA 26, and a one-hand photo is advertising. One-handed use leaves you nothing to counter a kick from the bar nose, and most of these listings do not state a chain brake.
The motor stopped and felt hot. Is that a fault?
It may be the cut-out doing its job. An Angseen SY-LT05 review describes a hot cut-out at about 15 minutes. Leave the saw to cool with the battery off, and do not defeat the cut-out. If it stops cold, with a smell of burning or a chain that will not move, use the return route rather than opening the housing.
