Mini chainsaw vs chainsaw

Updated: 22 October 2026

Mini chainsaw vs chainsaw is the decision that stops one small saw doing the whole garden. Use it for branches around 100 mm that you can reach from the ground. Use a full-size chainsaw, or a tree contractor, when the wood is a trunk, a winter of logs, or anything above your shoulder. The twelve kits are on the [mini chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/mini-chainsaw). Peter F. set this boundary from maker guides and UK public sources on 21 October 2026. We did not fell a tree with these saws. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the mini saw is for

A mini chainsaw in this set is mostly a 6 inch bar, sold for garden pruning. Hyundai’s HY20CCS150, not one of these ASINs, is described as suiting about 100–120 mm, with larger diameters pointed at a 14 inch saw. Webb’s 15 cm pruner page says about 100–110 mm. Stiga puts 5–10 inch bars on branches up to about 10 cm, and 12–14 inch bars on logs of about 10–20 cm. Those are manufacturer guides, not a cut we timed. Gardeners’ World, on 5 January 2026, says a mini saw does not replace a full-size saw. The M8 Boost is an 8 inch bar with a seller cap of 6 inches. None of these is a 16 inch felling saw. Choosing among the kits is the mini chainsaw buying guide.

Firewood and trunks

A winter of logs is a different tool. Stiga’s 12–14 inch bars for logs of about 10–20 cm are the manufacturer way of saying the pruning bar has left its job. An 8 inch mini is not a 16 inch saw. The extra length on the CH850, at about £69.98, or the M8 Boost, at about £59.99, does not create that run time, and the M8 seller cap remains 6 inches. One Rivlox review mentions thick firewood. One review is not a season of heating. The CH700R’s two 4000 mAh packs are still packs for a 6 inch saw. An Angseen review describes a hot cut-out at about 15 minutes on garden wood. If the piece is a trunk, use a full-size chainsaw you are competent with, or a contractor.

Felling, height and a contractor

Cutting down a tree is not a longer version of pruning. The Forestry Act 1967, section 9, excepts topping and lopping, and trees in a garden, from the felling licence in the cases that section sets out. That exception is about the licence. It does not make the cut safe, and it does not cancel a tree preservation order. Nests and orders are on prune with a mini chainsaw. The Health and Safety Executive’s chainsaw pages are written for people at work. They are about competence, protective equipment and felling cuts. They do not become optional because the bar is 6 inches. Anything above shoulder height, anything that needs a ladder, and anything in the crown is contractor work. The CHEOAR’s pole, listed at 4.2–6.5 ft, comes with a seller line that you do not need a ladder. That sentence is not HSE guidance on working at height, and the listing has no UK review line to set against it. Hire when the wood is standing, hung up, near a line, or simply bigger than the 100–120 mm band Hyundai states for a 6 inch saw.

Why a bigger watt number does not settle it

The listings argue with themselves about power, and the larger number does not move the exit. The Seesii CH700R bullets say 1000 W and the spec field says 900 W. The Peektook bullets say 1000 W and the spec field says 700 W. The NovorikX bullets say 530 W and the spec field says 2.3 horsepower, which is a different claim, not a translation. These motors were not measured. Treating the higher figure as the true one is how a 6 inch pruning saw gets sold as a small felling saw. A watt claim also says nothing about the brake, the oil or the pack. The CH700R can show 4.5 from 9,284, share that review text with the CH850, and still have no stated chain brake. The Angseen at about £33.99 can show 4.4 from 2,512 and still ship 2.0 Ah packs that reviewers say run out mid-job. For branches around the 100 mm guides, a mini saw from this set is the lighter tool. For firewood in the Stiga 10–20 cm log band, for a trunk, or for any cut off the ground, leave the mini saw in the box.

Common questions

Can a mini chainsaw replace a full-size chainsaw?
For garden branches around 100 mm, a mini saw is the tool these listings are selling, and Gardeners’ World’s line is that it does not replace a full-size saw. Hyundai points diameters beyond a 6 inch pruner at a 14 inch saw. Stiga puts 12–14 inch bars on firewood logs of about 10–20 cm. If your list is prunings you can reach from the ground, the mini saw can be enough. If your list is a trunk or a winter of logs, it is not.
What diameter is a 6 inch bar actually for?
Hyundai’s HY20CCS150 page says that 6 inch bar suits about 100–120 mm. Webb’s 15 cm pruner page says about 100–110 mm. Stiga’s compact bars are described for branches up to about 10 cm. Use those as maker guidance, not as a guarantee for every ASIN in this folder. The Seesii M8 Boost is an 8 inch bar with a seller recommendation that still stops at 6 inches, so the longer bar in the photo is not automatically a larger cut.
Can it cut firewood?
It can nibble a small offcut, and one Rivlox review mentions thick firewood. That is not the same as processing a winter’s logs. Packs in this set run from a single battery up to two 4000 mAh packs, and a hot cut-out already appears in an Angseen review at about 15 minutes. Stiga’s guide sends logs of about 10–20 cm to a 12–14 inch bar. For a stove’s worth of wood, that is the other saw.
Is an 8 inch mini the same as a 16 inch saw?
No. The CH850 and the M8 Boost are 8 inch cordless kits, at about £69.98 and about £59.99. A 16 inch saw is a different class of bar, mass and job. The M8 seller cap is 6 inches even though an 8 inch bar is fitted. The NovorikX at 25 cm is still a single-pack pruning saw at about £89.98, 3.8 from 86 reviews, not a felling saw.
Will a higher watt claim close the gap?
No. Several listings print two watt figures, such as 1000 W in the CH700R bullets and 900 W in the spec field. Which number is real was not tested. A higher unresolved number does not add bar length, a chain brake, or a pack that lasts through a log pile. Choose the saw by the diameter and the height of the work, then read the watts as an unresolved claim.
Do I need a felling licence for lopping in a garden?
Section 9 of the Forestry Act 1967 excepts topping and lopping, and trees in a garden, in the cases that section sets out. That is a licence point. It does not cancel a tree preservation order, and it does not make a ladder cut acceptable. If the tree is protected, read the pruning page before you cut a live branch. If the work is felling rather than lopping, the licence question is live again, and this bar is the wrong tool anyway.
When should I hire a tree contractor instead of buying either saw?
Hire when the tree is standing, the branch is in the crown, the wood is hung up, a power line is nearby, or you are not confident about a preservation order or an active nest. HSE treats work on or in a tree as a competence job. For repeat work on ground-level branches around 100 mm, the mini saw is the buy. For repeat work on logs, a full-size saw is the buy, in a category this folder does not cover.
