Prune with a mini chainsaw

Updated: 22 October 2026

A heavy side branch will tear a strip of bark down the trunk if you cut it from the top in one pass. Prune with a mini chainsaw the way arboriculture pages already describe a branch cut: lighten the limb, undercut, then take the stub at the collar. An active nest, a tree preservation order without written consent, or a cut you can only reach from a ladder are stops, even when the saw feels like a garden gadget. The kits are on the [mini chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/mini-chainsaw). Peter F. used RHS, Stihl UK, GOV.UK and RSPB pages on 21 October 2026. We did not prune a specimen tree for this guide. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The three cuts

The Royal Horticultural Society’s pruning guide is the clearest public version of the sequence. Make an undercut about 20 cm out from the trunk, then a top cut a little further out so the branch falls without peeling the bark, then a final cut at the branch collar. The collar is the slight swelling where the branch meets the stem. Cutting flush into the trunk, or leaving a long peg, both leave a wound the tree closes badly. Stihl UK’s pruning article says the same job in a slightly different order: lighten the limb first, undercut part-way, overcut further out, then remove the stub outside the collar. The short bar does not make a single top cut safe for the bark. A thumb-thick wisteria cane may need one careful cut. A holly limb as thick as your wrist has enough weight to tear, so it gets the undercut, the relieving cut, and only then the collar. Reviewers on the Angseen SY-LT05 mention both plants. Stand so the falling piece cannot swing into your leg, and keep both hands on the saw. Oil and tension belong on how to use a mini chainsaw before you start.

Height and how much to remove

Stay on the ground. Stihl UK says not to use a chainsaw on a ladder or in a tree unless you have the qualifications. The Health and Safety Executive treats work on or in a tree as work that needs competence, and a 6 inch bar does not change the fall. If you cannot reach the cut with both feet on the ground, that branch is not a mini-saw job. A pole attachment, such as the CHEOAR’s listed 4.2–6.5 ft pole, does not come with a UK review sample here, and a seller line that you do not need a ladder is not a method for working at height. The RHS says to avoid taking more than about a fifth of the canopy in a year. Clearing every inward branch because the saw is new will leave a tree that cannot feed itself. A public summary of BS 3998 adds a second limit: final cuts not more than one third of the parent stem, and again cut to the collar. That summary is not the standard text, and it is not permission to remove a third of a protected tree. If the limb is already a stem, that decision is mini chainsaw vs chainsaw.

Nests, preservation orders and the boundary

Wild birds’ nests are protected while they are in use. The RSPB describes March to September as the main nesting season, and says cutting is lawful only if no active nest is damaged. They prefer hedge cutting between 1 September and 28 February, and they still say check, because some species nest outside those dates. The agricultural hedgerow closed period from 1 March to 31 August is not a ban on every garden hedge. In Northern Ireland the RSPB points to the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985, so do not copy an England hedgerow date onto an NI garden and call it the same law. If you see a nest with eggs or young, you stop. A tree preservation order is a second stop. GOV.UK says lopping a TPO tree needs written consent unless an exception applies. Dead branches are the exception people mean, in the TPO regulations, not a general permission to tidy live wood. The Forestry Act 1967, section 9, excepts topping and lopping, and trees in a garden, from the felling licence in the cases that section describes. That exception does not cancel a preservation order. Overhanging branches from a neighbour are a civil matter: you may cut back to the boundary, the wood still belongs to the neighbour, and you still check for an order. Offer the wood back. It is not a right to step onto their land.

When a professional takes the saw

Hand the job to a tree surgeon when you would have to climb, when a power line runs through the crown, when a limb is hung up in another branch, or when you cannot get a clear answer on consent. Unclear consent is a stop, not a prompt to cut a little and see. Stihl’s ladder line is qualifications you either hold or you do not. HSE’s competence line for work on or in a tree is the same shape. A mini saw makes the tool easier to lift. It does not make the qualification appear. Also hand it over when the cut is more than about a fifth of the crown and the tree is mature, when the collar cut would be more than about a third of the parent stem, or when the stem is past the pruning diameters on the versus page. Those are rules of thumb from the RHS, from the BS 3998 summary, and from maker bar guides. If the work really is a few ground-level limbs, inside the fifth, with no nest and no order, the mini saw is a fair tool once it is oiled and tensioned.

Common questions

How do I cut a branch without tearing the bark?
Make an undercut about 20 cm out from the trunk, then a top cut so the weight falls clear, then a final cut at the branch collar. That is the RHS sequence. Stihl UK adds that you lighten a heavy limb first and leave the stub outside the collar rather than cutting flush. A single top cut on a holly limb as thick as your wrist is how the bark strips. The mini bar does not change the order. Oil the chain before you start so the cut is not also a dry, grabbing cut.
Can I use a mini chainsaw from a ladder?
No. Stihl UK’s pruning guidance says not to use a chainsaw on a ladder or in a tree without the qualifications. HSE treats work on or in a tree as a competence issue, and a shorter bar does not remove it. If both feet cannot stay on the ground, leave the limb. A pole saw listing that says you do not need a ladder is a seller line, not a working-at-height method, and the CHEOAR file here has no UK reviews to lean on.
When should I leave the hedge alone for birds?
The RSPB treats March to September as the main nesting season and prefers hedge cutting from 1 September to 28 February, with a check even then. Cutting is lawful only if no active nest is damaged. The 1 March to 31 August agricultural hedgerow closed season is a separate rule for hedges that rule covers. It is not an automatic ban on every garden hedge, and it is not Northern Ireland law. The NI protection the RSPB cites is the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985. If you find a nest in use, you stop.
Do I need a felling licence to prune a garden tree?
Section 9 of the Forestry Act 1967 excepts topping and lopping, and trees in a garden, from the felling licence in the cases set out there. Pruning a garden tree is often inside that exception. The exception does not cancel a tree preservation order or conservation-area controls, and it does not allow you to damage an active nest. If the work is felling rather than lopping, the licence question is live again, and this saw is the wrong tool for a trunk.
My tree has a preservation order. Can I still remove a live branch?
Only with the written consent the order requires, unless an exception applies. GOV.UK says lopping a TPO tree needs that consent, and that trimming can need a works-to-trees application. Dead wood is the exception people rely on, in the TPO regulations, and it is not a general permit for live branches. A garden felling-licence exception does not switch a TPO off. If you are unsure whether an order exists, ask the council before you cut.
Can I cut the neighbour’s overhang?
The police FAQ treats this as a civil matter: you may cut back to the boundary, the wood still belongs to the neighbour, and you still have to check for a preservation order. You do not gain a right to fell the tree, or to go onto their land. If the overhanging limb is above head height, or you cannot see a nest, the cut has left DIY pruning. Offer the arisings back rather than keeping them by default.
Which cuts are for a tree surgeon?
Anything that needs a climb or a ladder, anything near a power line, anything hung up in the crown, and any live cut on a protected tree where consent is unclear. Also hand over a reduction that would take more than about a fifth of the canopy in a year, in the RHS wording, or a final cut bigger than about a third of the parent stem, in the BS 3998 summary. Ground-level limbs inside those limits, with no nest and no order, are the mini saw’s job once the chain is oiled.
