Bio vs mineral chainsaw oil

Updated: 22 October 2026

You can buy a cheaper mineral bar oil for the same saw. Bio vs mineral chainsaw oil is a type decision, not a ranking of the six biodegradable bottles. Fresh mineral bar oil can be reasonable on a private garden saw you use now and then. A pond, a public contract, or a certified wood needs a real bio product, not a kitchen bottle. The [bio chainsaw oil comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/chainsaw-oil-bio) is the bottle table. Products Compared used HSE guidance, Oil Care, UKWAS, and the saved amazon.co.uk listings on 21 October 2026. There is no UK lab head-to-head. Three liquids people mix up

Mineral bar oil is a formulated chain lubricant made from mineral oil. Formulated bio bar oil is built to be biodegradable, sometimes plant-based, sometimes described as bio mineral, with or without a named test. Neat rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, or whatever is in the kitchen is neither product. Forum reports of neat vegetable oil, and of gummed pumps, are anecdote, not a UK standard. A Husqvarna owner’s note says to clean the bar before long storage if you have used vegetable-based chain oil, because it can stiffen the chain. That does not turn cooking oil into bar oil. HSE leaflet INDG317 tells people not to use discarded engine oil. Fresh mineral bar oil is not that sump oil. How to read a test name is the bio chainsaw oil buying guide.

When mineral oil is still reasonable

On your own garden saw, used a few times a season, fresh mineral bar oil can be a fair choice. Nothing in this research is a UK statute that bans it on a private lawn. A dealer guide from Ron Smith treats mineral oil as the stable option for occasional use, and it says plant-based oil can thicken in the cold. That is a shop opinion, not a laboratory result. Oil flung from the chain is total loss. One UK reviewer of a biodegradable Oregon bottle chose it to avoid mineral stains around a pond. Mineral oil stops being a preference when the wood is certified, the buyer is public, or the cut is beside water you care about. Those duties are on bio chainsaw oil for woodland.

What bio changes, and what it does not

Formulated bio bar oil is built to break down more readily than a straight mineral bar oil. It does not change the fact that the pump throws oil away. Oil Care notes that vegetable-based lubricants can have a shorter service life, and that waste biodegradable oil is still hazardous waste. UK reviews in this set mostly say the bio bottles lubricate. Nine UK reviews of Liqui Moly name no leak or gumming. Seven of Stihl BioPlus name no fault. Oregon’s large sample complains about pouring and colour, not a dry chain. That is evidence against the claim that bio oil always fails to lubricate. It is not proof that every bio oil stays fluid in a cold shed.

What the word bio does not give you

Oregon’s listing says 97% biodegradable and does not name OECD 301 B. At £11.13 it is the widely reviewed option when you dislike mineral stains, and it is not the Defra paperwork. Liqui Moly’s listing names OECD 301 B, at £12.49. If a certificate or a contract will ask, you need that named test, which is why Liqui Moly or Stihl’s UK documentation sits ahead of a percentage. Stihl’s Amazon listing says quickly biodegradable and does not print the test name. Paying about £62.90 per litre for 100 ml of an untested bio mineral oil is poor value either way.

Common questions

Is biodegradable chainsaw oil worth the extra money?
It is worth it when the extra money buys a behaviour you need: less persistent oil on soil or beside water, or a test name someone will ask for. In this set the Oregon litre is £11.13 and Liqui Moly is £12.49, so the gap versus a cheap mineral bar oil may be small, though this page does not price deleted mineral listings. It is poor value when you pay about £62.90 per litre for 100 ml of an untested bio mineral oil by misreading the bottle size.
Can I use mineral bar oil in my own garden?
Yes, if it is fresh bar oil and your saw manual allows it. A private garden is not UKWAS and it is not a Defra buying contract. Mineral oil is a weaker choice beside a pond or on ground you want to keep free of oily stains, because the chain flings oil whether or not a statute applies.
Can I pour cooking oil or neat rapeseed oil into the bar tank?
No. Cooking oil and neat rapeseed oil are not formulated bar oils. Users on forums report both success and gummed pumps. A chainsaw manual that mentions vegetable-based chain oil is talking about a bar lubricant, and it still tells you to clean the bar before long storage because that oil can stiffen the chain. Use a bottle sold as chain oil.
Can I use old engine oil on the chain?
No. HSE INDG317 rules out discarded engine oil as a chain lubricant. It is a poor lubricant and a skin-cancer concern with regular contact. That ban is separate from the choice between fresh mineral bar oil and formulated bio bar oil.
When does the choice stop being a preference?
It stops being a preference on UKWAS woodland, where biodegradable cutting-chain lubricant should be used where practicable, and for a public buyer who must meet Defra’s lubricant standard. A spill into a watercourse is an incident either way. A private garden saw can still run mineral bar oil until one of those duties applies.
