Biodegradable chainsaw oil near water

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are cutting beside a garden pond, or you have been asked to work in a UKWAS wood. Those jobs are not one rule. Biodegradable chainsaw oil near water follows the site and the buyer. A private lawn can still run fresh mineral bar oil. A pond makes formulated bio oil the sensible choice even when no statute forces it, because chain oil is thrown onto the ground. The bottle table is the [bio chainsaw oil comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/chainsaw-oil-bio). Products Compared read UKWAS, Defra’s 2015 Government Buying Standards, and Oil Care against listings saved on 21 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three different duties

In your own garden, these sources do not ban mineral bar oil. You may still prefer a formulated bio oil because the oiler is total loss. Beside a pond that preference gets stronger. One UK reviewer of Oregon’s litre chose it to avoid mineral stains around water. That is judgement, not a clause that makes mineral oil illegal on a patio. The type choice is bio chainsaw oil vs mineral. UKWAS says biodegradable cutting-chain lubricants should be used where practicable, including operator health and machinery cost, and that you plan for spills. It does not name a bottle or a test. “Where practicable” is a real limit, not a way to skip bio oil on a certified site without a reason you can explain. Defra’s Government Buying Standards, November 2015, tell public buyers the product must meet OECD 301 B and OECD 201, 202, and 203. That standard does not bind a householder on amazon.co.uk. It does bind a public body that has adopted it.

What evidence matches the duty

For a public buyer who must show OECD 301 B, Liqui Moly part 1280 at £12.49 names that test on the amazon.co.uk listing. The listing does not set out OECD 201, 202, and 203, so do not tell a buyer those three tests are printed there. Stihl’s saved Amazon listing at £17.89 says quickly biodegradable and does not name the test. Stihl’s UK page does, with the Blue Angel and the EU Ecolabel, at £12.13 per litre including VAT. Keep that page with the invoice if someone will audit the bottle. Oregon’s 1 litre at £11.13 says 97% biodegradable. That is not Defra’s standard. Catalogue pages for O10-6362 have cited CEC L-33-A-94, a different method. Makita at £22.95 and DD-Teck’s 100 ml title name no test. If a clerk will ask, photograph the test name on the page you paid.

Waste and a spill

Bio oil that is left over is still waste oil. Oil Care says a biodegradable lubricant from a total-loss use is hazardous waste and should not be poured away. Stihl’s safety data sheet uses waste code 13 02 07*. A “not classified” line is not permission to tip the bottle into a ditch. Wipe a smear with a rag, which sits with how to use chainsaw bar oil. If oil reaches a drain, a ditch, or a stream, stop the flow if you can do that without risk, keep people and animals away, and call the relevant environmental authority. Choosing a greener bottle does not close an incident that has already left the saw.

Storage of a small bottle

The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001, regulation 2, puts containers of 200 litres or less outside those regulations. A 1 litre chain-oil bottle does not need a bund under that England rule. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own oil-storage rules, so do not copy the England exemption onto a Scottish farm tank. The exemption is not a reason to leave an open can in the rain. HSE still wants labelled, capped containers, and still rules out discarded engine oil as a chain lubricant.

Common questions

Do I have to use biodegradable chainsaw oil in the UK?
You have to follow the rule for the site and the buyer, not a single national ban. A private garden can use fresh mineral bar oil. UKWAS certified woodland should use biodegradable cutting-chain lubricant where practicable. A public body buying to Defra’s standard is in a stricter test list. Discarded engine oil is out in all of those settings under HSE guidance.
What does UKWAS actually require?
UKWAS says biodegradable cutting-chain lubricants should be used where practicable, including the practicalities of operator health and machinery cost, and that you plan for spills. It does not name Oregon, Stihl, or OECD 301 B. If you cannot use bio oil, you need a practicable reason, not a preference you have not written down.
Does a pond in a private garden change the rule?
It does not by itself create a UKWAS duty or a Defra duty. It does change the sensible choice. Chain oil is flung off the bar, so mineral oil will reach the margin of the water. A formulated bio bar oil is the better judgement there, even though no statute in these sources forces a householder to buy one.
Which of these bottles name OECD 301 B?
Liqui Moly’s amazon.co.uk listing names OECD 301 B. Stihl’s UK product page names it, and the saved Amazon listing for BioPlus does not. Oregon’s Amazon listing says 97% biodegradable and does not name the test. Makita’s UK listing and DD-Teck’s title do not name it either. Naming OECD 301 B is still not the same as printing OECD 201, 202, and 203.
Does a 1 litre bottle need a bund in England?
Under the Oil Storage Regulations for England, containers of 200 litres or less fall outside those regulations, so a 1 litre bottle is outside that bund rule. Keep it capped and labelled anyway. Do not apply that England exemption to a Scottish installation without checking Scotland’s own rules.
