How to use a chainsaw safely

Updated: 22 October 2026

The parcel has arrived, the chain looks sharp in the photo, and the first cut is already planned before you check whether bar oil is in the box. On many amazon.co.uk minis, it is not. Ground-level pruning and log cuts with the corded and battery saws in the [chainsaw comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/chainsaw) still need oil, tension, two hands, and PPE that kit goggles alone do not cover. This page is setup and stance for those tools. It is not tree climbing or commercial felling. Peter F. used the saved listings and public UK guidance. This is not a laboratory cut. Before you pull the trigger

Read the manual for your exact model, even when the diagrams are poor. With the battery out, or the plug pulled, inspect the chain and the bar. Confirm the chain brake moves freely if the listing names one. Many minis only list a safety lock plus a trigger. HSE’s chainsaw PPE page lists a helmet, hearing protection, eye protection, gloves to BS EN 381-7 where cut protection is required, leg protection to BS EN 381-5, and boots to BS EN ISO 17249. Fabric gloves in a mini kit are not that list. For bucking on the ground, leg protection is the part most buyers skip. Keep children and dogs out of the arc of a thrown chain. Never work off a ladder. Overhead work without training is where a hobby user should stop.

Bar oil and chain tension

Several rows ship an empty oil bottle. Fill it with bar and chain oil, not used engine oil and not two-stroke mix. The corded Hyundais state automatic oiling and do not list oil in the box, so buy a litre first. Manual mini reservoirs, including Seesii and Supstable, need a press or a pump stroke while you cut. Tension the chain with the power off. Stihl UK’s public advice is snug enough that the chain stays in the groove but can still be lifted slightly by hand. After a few warm cuts, corded owners report slack and thrown chains if they skip a check. Replace a dull chain instead of pushing harder. A dull chain raises kickback risk and motor heat.

Two hands and stance

Use two hands, rear handle and front handle, for every cut, even when a mini bullet markets one-hand use. Stand slightly to the side of the cutting plane, feet apart, and keep the nose out of the kickback zone. Cut at waist height where you can, rather than between your feet. Let the chain do the work. Do not force the bar through dense wood. If the motor bogs on a corded saw, release the trigger and check for pinching. On a battery mini, bogging often means the bar is too small for the stem. Stop before you overheat the pack.

Corded, battery and the one petrol saw

Corded 230 V saws need a BS 1363 plug and a cable route behind you. Electrical Safety First advises RCD protection and caution in the wet. The Hyundai HYC1600E lists a three-metre cable. The HYC2400E lists twelve metres. Plan the route before you step over a live lead. Battery minis need charged packs and a cool place to swap. OPSS report 2609-0234 documented a failed charger plug on one mini saw. Inspect a new charger. Do not ignore loose pins or heat at the plug. Petrol in this set is only the HYC6200X. Mix fuel outdoors with the engine stopped and cool. UK reviewers often cite 40:1 for that Hyundai, not a 50:1 figure from another brand.

When to call someone else

Stop and hire a qualified arborist when the stem is off the ground, near overhead lines, on a road verge, or protected by a tree preservation order. HSE requires certificates for work on or in a tree in employment. Hobby cutting does not remove the physics. Hung-up branches and windblown stems kill inexperienced operators. If the listing never named a chain brake and you are uncomfortable relying on a trigger lock alone, limit the work to small ground-level material, or choose different kit after the chainsaw buying guide.

Common questions

Do mini saws arrive with oil?
Many kits list an empty bottle only. The Seesii rows ship an empty oil bottle. Corded Hyundai listings state automatic oiling and do not list oil in the box. Check the included-components line on your listing in the comparison before you plan the first cut, and buy bar and chain oil.
How tight should the chain be?
Snug in the bar groove, with a slight lift by hand at the mid-point, then check again after warm-up. Too loose throws the chain. Too tight overheats the bar. Do this with the battery out or the plug pulled.
Are the gloves in the box enough?
For serious ground bucking, no. HSE expects leg protection to BS EN 381-5 and gloves to BS EN 381-7 where cut protection is required. Thin kit fabric is not that set. For light pruning, eye protection and sturdy boots are still the minimum.
Can I use a corded saw in the rain?
Electrical Safety First warns against wet conditions with mains-powered garden tools. Wait for dry weather. If you must work then, a petrol saw away from sockets, with full PPE, is the other path in this set. Do not run a live lead across wet grass.
What PPE for garden pruning only?
At minimum, eye protection, hearing protection if the motor is loud in your garden, and sturdy boots. Add leg protection when cuts are near your legs or a round could roll. Kit goggles alone do not cover that list.
Does my saw have a safety lock or a chain brake?
Read the listing bullets literally. A lock prevents an accidental trigger pull. A brake stops the chain during kickback when the guard is engaged. Many minis name a lock. The corded and petrol Hyundais in this set do not name a chain brake in the five bullets.
