Chainsaw saw horse for a round log

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have stove rounds on the ground and a chainsaw in your hands, and you want a stand that keeps the trunk still while the chain stays in the wood. A chainsaw saw horse, in this set, is a toothed or jawed cradle for one round. It is not a certificate, and it is not a substitute for the saw or the clothing. Door trestles appear here only as the wrong tool. The step-by-step cut is the [how to use a log saw horse](/hub/forestry-tools/saw-horse-wood/sub/saw-horse-wood-how-to-use) page. Prices and stars for all twelve listings are on the [saw horse wood comparison](/hub/forestry-tools/saw-horse-wood). We did not test a chain against a rail.

A cradle, not a trestle

Five listings in this capture are built as log cradles. The Oregon 584145 is about £39.50, with a stated 27 cm maximum and 79.83 kg. The Einhell 4500067 is about £32.97, with 300 mm and 150 kg stated, and heights of 600, 640, and 680 mm. The Relaxdays 10029462 is about £39.90, with about 150 kg stated and no diameter. The eSkde ESLH1 is about £59.99, with 150 kg and adjustable jaws, and again no diameter. The Harbour single is about £23.99, with teeth, and with neither a load nor a diameter printed. The other seven are workshop trestles, including both BORA pairs, the Evolution and Stanley pairs, the Harbour pair, the B2C plastic pair, and the Roughneck single. A flat top will let a wet trunk roll into the bar. If you are still choosing the type, the saw horse buying guide is the order. The named picks are on the best log saw horse page.

Diameter and teeth

Use the diameter the listing actually prints, and treat a missing figure as missing. Oregon stops at 27 cm. Einhell’s bullets stop at 300 mm. Relaxdays offers a V and about 150 kg, and it does not say how wide the V is. eSkde says the jaws cover a range of sizes and does not give the top of the range. Harbour says the width is adjustable and does not give a millimetre. Seat one round down into the serrations. If it sits proud and can spin, it is too big for that cradle. One eSkde owner in a 51-rating sample put about 3 tonnes through the jaws and still left a warning that the horse can be used slightly wrong. That warning does not name the limit. Your tape does.

Keep the chain in the wood

Look for daylight under the exit before you start the saw. The cut belongs between supports, in wood, then in air. One of four review texts on the Harbour single says the middle strut and support stop a full cut-through. A rail, a bolt, or a tooth in the bar’s path will blunt the chain. A log-horse maker, Forest Master, describes that metal-bar hazard for their own designs. It is not a test of the Oregon or the Einhell. Do not start on the tip of the bar, and do not hold the log with a hand near the chain. If the bar pinches, switch off and free the kerf. FISA 304’s order is compression side first on a supported length, then the tension side. If you cannot see a clear exit, you do not have a chainsaw horse in working order.

What you still wear, and when to stop

For ground chainsaw work, HSE’s chainsaw pages list a helmet to BS EN 397 or the alternatives named on that page, hearing protection to BS EN 352, eye protection, gloves to BS EN 381-7 where cut protection is required, leg protection to BS EN 381-5, and boots to BS EN ISO 17249. No personal protective equipment stops every cut. The cradle is not HSE-approved. When this is work, the operator is expected to be trained. HSE’s INDG291 says those PUWER duties do not apply to domestic work in a private household. That is not a free pass to skip the clothing or to cut a hung-up stem. Oregon’s 79.83 kg is the coherent small number. Einhell prints about 150 kg. Harbour prints nothing. If you cannot roll the log into the teeth without a twist you cannot control, leave it. The type split, if you are still unsure, is on log saw horse vs trestle.

Common questions

What log diameter do these cradles actually state?
Oregon states 27 cm. Einhell states 300 mm. Relaxdays, eSkde, and the Harbour single do not print a maximum diameter. Adjustable jaws and an adjustable width are not a number you can saw to. If your round is over the printed cap, that cradle is the wrong one. We did not measure a log in the jaw.
Will the chain hit the frame?
It will if you cut into a rail, a centre strut, or a tooth. The Harbour single has a review that says the middle support stops a full cut. Check your own frame for daylight under the exit before you start. If there is no clear exit, move the log.
What PPE does HSE list for ground work?
HSE lists a helmet to BS EN 397 or the alternatives on its page, hearing protection to BS EN 352, eye protection, gloves to BS EN 381-7 where cut protection is required, trousers to BS EN 381-5, and boots to BS EN ISO 17249. No combination stops every cut. The horse is not part of that clothing list.
Does the horse replace training?
No. When the work is employment, HSE treats ground chainsaw use as high risk and expects a trained operator. A private household sits outside PUWER, as INDG291 explains, and that does not turn a cradle into a course. The stand only holds a log that is already down.
Can I use a Stanley or BORA pair for rounds?
You should not. Those are trestles for doors, timber, and sheet. They do not have log teeth, and a flat top lets a round roll. Buy a cradle if the job is firewood.
What if the log is heavier than the stated load?
Do not put it on the horse. The stated load was never a test we ran. The Relaxdays sample includes a horse that bent and stopped holding logs. If you cannot roll the piece, it is already too much.
Is a chainsaw support arm the same as a cradle?
No. A support arm is a fitting on the saw. A cradle is a stand on the ground that holds one round in teeth or jaws. Neither replaces leg protection or a clear exit for the bar.
