Three guides for a UK split: how to calculate running costs from electrical use, when planning permission applies before anyone drills a wall, and how a wall split differs from a portable split.

Common questions about cooling

Can I fit a wall split myself?
A fixed wall split is not weekend DIY. Opening the refrigerant circuit needs an F-gas certificate, and company certification if the engineer works for someone else. “Pre-gassed” does not remove that rule. The wall listings name an outdoor unit as required. Order a customer-supplied unit only after a qualified installer agrees to fit that model. That point comes from the listing wording and the public UK fitting notes on the comparison pages.
Which split is the top pick in this set?
On the split comparison, the Midea PortaSplit is the top pick. It has the largest review sample in that set, at 4.3 from 23 ratings, a stated 12,000 BTU output, and reviewers describe setup without a drilled hole. The captured shelf price was about £1,099.99. A 5,000 BTU portable split is a cooling-only option for a small space. The page uses amazon.co.uk listings dated 15 October 2026.
What should I read on a wall air conditioner listing?
The wall comparison looks at printed BTU, a stated room area where one exists, a noise figure labelled as the indoor unit, a Wi-Fi claim, and a qualified-installer sentence. The 9,000 BTU listing is the only one that states up to 22 m² and calls 22 dB the indoor unit. Star counts are one, two, three and one, so stars do not sort the set. A++ on a title is a seller line.
What is a Trotec air cooler on these pages?
A Trotec air cooler on these amazon.co.uk listings is a water-tank tower. You fill the tank and the unit blows air across a wet filter. The PAE 11 and the PAE 29 listings do not name a refrigerant, a compressor, a BTU figure or an exhaust hose. The PAE 11 title still says mobile air conditioning. The PAE 29 is the top pick when the 4-litre tank and fan-only mode matter more than the lower PAE 11 price.
Which Trotec fan lists a UK plug?
UK mains are about 230 V. In the fan comparison, only the TVE 17 and the TVE 16 list a Type G plug. The TVE 8 lists Type F and the TVE 23 S lists Schuko. In England, Wales and Scotland the supply check is a BS 1363 plug, or a non-UK plug with a conversion plug and a BS 1362 fuse. The TVE 17 is the household top pick. A fan moves air. It does not refrigerate the room.
Which Trotec pump suits a borehole?
Match the pump to the job before you compare flow. For a measured borehole, the TDP 370 E is the top pick in that set: stated flow 5,100 l/h, a 23 m cable, and a 4.5 average from 166 reviews, at about £230.19. The TWP 4006 E is a short clean-water pump at about £49.50. The 20,000 l/h TWP 11000 ES is a waste-water listing. Star figures are listing averages.
Did you test these products in a lab?
The comparisons read amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources. Editorial notes use those listing figures and review counts. We did not run a lab test, and a small star sample is not treated as a strong verdict. Prices are the captured shelf prices in GBP. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
What should I check before buying a split for a UK home?
Check the install path, whether the unit is cooling-only or a heat pump, and a noise figure the listing actually labels. A trade rule of thumb on the split page is about 100–150 W per square metre before sun and equipment, and it is only a rule of thumb. Room sizes and decibel lines are seller figures. Fixed indoor units are also covered in the wall air conditioner comparison.
