How to use a handheld fan

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a rechargeable handheld, or you are opening the box, and a low-speed claim can sound like an all-night run. London Fire Brigade, on 29 July 2026, said not to leave an electric fan on unattended or overnight, after a hand fan fire and a battery that exploded while charging. Charge it where you can see it, use a speed you can bear, and stop if it smells hot. The rows are on the [hand fan comparison](/hub/cooling/hand-fan). This was written on 20 October 2026 from public UK guidance and these listing notes, not from a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Charge it on a clear surface

The box usually contains a USB lead, not a UK wall plug. Use a fused three-pin charger from a seller you can name, on a hard clear surface, and stay in the room. Do not charge it on a bed. Midnight Blue states about 2.5 hours on USB-C. Italian Stroll leaves the time blank, so you watch the fan. One Midnight Blue reviewer says that colour runs while connected. That is one comment, not permission to leave every fan spinning on the lead. If the page does not say it may run while charging, switch it off, charge it, then unplug it. The plug check before you buy is the handheld fan buying guide.

Use the speed you can bear

Start on the lowest speed and step up only while the air on your face is worth the noise. Diveblues states up to 12 hours on low and about 3 hours on full. An up-to-20-hours line, as on the Aecooly Mighty, does not give the high-speed time. Bearwind has five speeds, and a reviewer says you step through every speed to switch off. NHS advice is that a fan can help below 35°C as part of cooling. GOV.UK says a fan aimed only at your body can dry you, so drink water. On a train, that limit is the commute page.

Clean the outside, not the cell

Switch off and unplug before you clean. Do not immerse the fan or pour water through the blades. Morphy Richards’ note for a different USB fan, the Air Flex, says let the grille dry. Dimplex’s DXRCFN manual says skip detergents and do not treat the product as user-serviceable. Wipe the outside with a dry or barely damp cloth and keep water out of the port. Jsdoin says its grille turns off for cleaning. Diveblues, Bearwind, and VersionTECH. do not, so leave a fixed grille on and use a dry brush. Do not open the battery.

When to stop

Stop if the fan smells hot, hisses, swells, or smokes. Do not leave it running overnight or when you are out of the room. London Fire Brigade said that in July 2026. An hour claim is not a bedtime mode. Call 999 for a fire, a burn, or suspected heatstroke. A locked-rotor line on Midnight Blue is a shutoff claim if the blades jam, not a fireproof rating. VersionTECH. says not to leave the fan in direct sunlight. Put it away with the lead off, somewhere you would notice if it were warm.

Common questions

How do you charge a handheld fan safely?
Use a fused UK three-pin charger and the lead in the box. Place the fan on a hard, clear surface, stay nearby, and unplug it when the charge is done. Midnight Blue states about 2.5 hours and the Bearwind about three hours. If your listing does not state a time, do not invent one, and do not leave the fan on a bed. London Fire Brigade warned against unattended charging after a battery explosion.
Can you use it while it is plugged in?
Only if the listing you bought says so, and even then you stay with it. One reviewer of Diveblues Midnight Blue says that colour runs while it is connected. Other fans in this set do not carry that note. VersionTECH. has a 20 cm USB-A lead and no instruction to run it from the cable as a desk fan all day. Charge, unplug, then use it.
Should you leave it on overnight?
No. London Fire Brigade said not to use an electric fan overnight and not to leave one on unattended. A low-speed claim of many hours is a seller figure for the battery, not a bedtime mode. Switch it off, unplug the charger, and use the fan again when you are awake and in the room.
How do you clean the grille?
Switch off, unplug, and wipe the outside. Do not immerse the fan or pour water through the blades. Jsdoin says its grille turns off for cleaning. If your model does not say the grille comes off, leave it on and use a dry brush. Morphy Richards and Dimplex, on other fans, both say the motor is not something you wash. Let any damp surface dry before you charge again.
What if it smells hot or swells?
Stop using it and stop charging it. Do not open the cell. If it is on fire, or someone is burned, call 999. If it is faulty and you are within 30 days, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you a right to reject it through the seller. A hot smell is not a reason to run the fan on a lower speed and hope it cools down.
What do you do above 35°C?
The NHS says a fan can help below 35°C and is not your only cooling. GOV.UK says not to aim a fan at your body as the only way you cool down. Drink water, and treat heatstroke as a 999 problem rather than a faster speed on a handheld. A small fan does not bring a room down through that threshold.
