Mains desk fan vs USB desk fan

Updated: 21 October 2026

A mains desk fan vs USB desk fan choice is about whether the air has to keep moving after the battery would have died, or whether you have to take the fan away from the socket. Both titles can say desk fan with remote. Prices are from the amazon.co.uk listings on 19 October 2026. The rows are on the [desk fan with remote control comparison](/hub/cooling/desk-fan-with-remote-control). The plug and decibel checks are on the [desk fan with remote control buying guide](/hub/cooling/desk-fan-with-remote-control/sub/desk-fan-with-remote-control-buying-guide). What each side is for

Choose a mains circulator when the fan must keep moving air without a charge. In this set that is the 38 W to 48 W group, and a 30 m² line is still a maker’s claim, not a temperature drop. Choose USB when the fan must leave the socket and you only need a personal breeze: a pram, a tent, or a desk where a lead would cross the keyboard. The VEMONT, TRILINK and LETREEN are that side. A 3 W VEMONT with a remote is still a breeze on your skin. A 40 W MBSM with a remote still has to plug in.

The watts and the prices in this comparison

The MBSM is 40 W at about £49.99, the UK-plug Iris is 45 W at about £54, and the DREO is 48 W at about £89.99. The bladeless Air Pro is 20 W at about £34.99, and reviewers call the breeze weak. On the USB side the VEMONT is 3 W at about £24.99, the TRILINK is 1.02 W at about £22.99, and the LETREEN is 10 W at about £19.99. Running them from a USB lead does not turn them into circulators. The VEMONT is ranked in Desk Fans. The TRILINK is number 6 in Clip Fans. Meaco’s 17 hour claim on meaco.com is about that other fan, not the VEMONT.

Battery claims versus review complaints

The hour lines are seller text. The VEMONT claims 4–11 hours from 5,000 mAh, the TRILINK up to 29 hours on mode 1, and the LETREEN 14–68 hours. High speed is the short end. VEMONT reviewers say a lower speed can last an evening and that a full charge takes a while. TRILINK packs later failed to hold charge. A LETREEN pack was flat after about two minutes. Check that claim in the first week, while you can still reject a fault. A mains fan runs until the timer ends. The stop is the plug or the voltage field.

The failure mode is different

Only the Iris PCF-SC15T-CT at about £54 states a UK plug. The Iris 531373 at about £58 states an EU plug, which will not go into a BS 1363 socket as supplied. Regulation 35 is about that mains plug. It does not apply in the same way to a 5 V USB fan. The DREO prints 110 V. On the USB side, TRILINK and LETREEN notes include missing remotes and a light you cannot switch off. One VEMONT buyer had a dead fob, and the button on the fan still worked. Night light is on the quiet desk fan for the bedroom page. For a bedroom from a socket, start with the Iris and accept a 1, 2 or 4 hour timer. For a pram or no trailing lead, prefer the VEMONT. Who each ASIN suits is on the best desk fan with remote page.

Common questions

When is USB the right default?
USB is the right default when the fan must leave the socket and the breeze only has to reach one person. A tent, a wheelchair or a pram fits. The VEMONT at about £24.99 is the desk-ranked option, at 3 W. The TRILINK and LETREEN are clip-ranked. USB is the wrong default when you hoped to mix a shut bedroom all evening at a high speed.
What runtime claims are printed on these three USB listings?
The VEMONT claims 4–11 hours from 5,000 mAh. The TRILINK claims up to 29 hours on mode 1 from 8,000 mAh. The LETREEN claims 14–68 hours from 15,000 mAh. The long figure is the low speed. None of them is a lab result from this comparison. A Meaco page that quotes up to 17 hours is about that other fan.
Does a remote exist on both sides?
Yes. The mains listings and the USB listings in this set are all sold with a remote. The handset does not equalise the airflow. On the mains side you change a circulator from the bed. On the USB side you change a small fan without reaching past a pram. The TRILINK quotes about 3 m and the LETREEN about 4 m. A missing remote is a not-as-described point with the retailer.
Which side has the UK plug problem?
The mains side. USB fans at 5 V do not use a BS 1363 plug. Among the corded fans, an EU plug is stated on Iris 531373 and 110 V on the DREO. Only one mains ASIN states a UK plug. Regulation 35 is the mains rule. It is not a reason to add a travel adaptor when another listing already states the UK plug.
Can a clip fan stand in for a circulator?
No. The TRILINK and LETREEN are ranked in Clip Fans, at 1.02 W and 10 W. Reviewers use them close to one person. A circulator here is the 38–48 W corded fan with a sweep. Clipping a USB fan to a headboard will not do the MBSM’s 70° sweep or the Iris oscillation across a small room.
