Multi split vs three single splits

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have three rooms to cool and one outside wall, and you are deciding whether one box is enough or whether three condensers are kinder when something fails. A multi split versus three single splits is that choice: one outdoor unit with three indoor heads, or three separate mono-splits. This page does not rank the amazon.co.uk listings. Those rows are on the [triple split air conditioner comparison](/hub/cooling/triple-split-air-conditioner). Prices below are from named UK installers’ guides, not a quote for your house. Peter F. did not install either layout. Updated 20 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

One condenser or three

A triple split uses one outdoor unit and three indoor units: one hole pattern, one power supply to design, one service clearance. Each room still gets a head and a setpoint. A mono-split uses one outdoor unit per room, so three rooms mean three condensers and three positions that have to be legal and quiet. The amazon.co.uk products in this table are advertised as three-zone systems, not three mono-splits sold as a bundle. B0D2JFVG8Z does not even say clearly that the outdoor unit is in the box. Buying that listing does not decide the layout. You decide the layout, then you buy a machine that matches it. How the kilowatts should be read is on the triple split air conditioner buying guide.

Price and pipe runs

Installer guides do not agree, so they stay labelled. Aircova starts a three-room multi-split at £5,495 and puts three single splits at about £2,195 each, about £6,585. Westbridge Air, writing about London, starts a three-room multi-split at £5,100. Get Aircon Prices puts a three-zone guide at £4,800 to £6,400 and notes that separate systems can cost less when rooms sit at opposite ends. None of these is a UK average. A £1,949.00 marketplace kit is supply only. One outdoor unit wants every head piped back to the same corner. A short stack of bedrooms over a side passage is the case multi-splits are drawn for. A kitchen at one gable and a bedroom at the other can make a second condenser the smaller job. Ask for both prices on the same drawing.

Failure and opposite modes

One outdoor unit is a single point of failure. Aircova says a fault on the multi-split outdoor unit stops every room. Three mono-splits keep the other rooms running when one condenser fails. On a standard multi-split the rooms can hold different temperatures and still share one mode. Daikin UK states that the 3MXM-N range is all cooling or all heating. Westbridge notes that several single splits can heat one room and cool another, because each circuit is its own. Heat-recovery VRF can run opposite modes, at a different budget. The planning count is on the planning permission for an outdoor air conditioner page.

Which to choose

Choose one triple split when you have a single outdoor position the council, the lease and the neighbour can live with, and the rooms share a season. You accept that a dead outdoor unit pauses every room. That is the usual three-bedroom house with the rooms stacked over one side wall. Choose three mono-splits when a failure must stay in one room, when someone needs heat in one room and cooling in another on the same day, or when the pipe price back to one corner is higher than the extra condensers. In England you may leave permitted development once the unit count is exceeded. Check that before you order three boxes. The machines listed as three-zone kits are on the best triple split air conditioner page. Do not let a 27,000 BTU title make the layout choice for you.

Common questions

Is one multi-split cheaper than three single splits?
Often on installer from-prices, and not always once the pipes are drawn. Aircova starts a three-room multi-split at £5,495 against about £6,585 for three singles. Westbridge starts a three-room multi-split at £5,100 in London. Get Aircon Prices says separate systems can win when rooms are at opposite ends. Those are three firms, not one UK price.
What happens if the outdoor unit fails?
On a multi-split, all three rooms stop until that one outdoor unit is repaired. On three single splits, the other two rooms keep running. Aircova states that shared-failure point. An unbranded condenser with no UK review history can add a parts delay. You pay for the isolation with two extra boxes on the wall.
Can three single splits heat and cool different rooms?
Yes. Each mono-split has its own circuit, so one room can heat while another cools. A standard multi-split cannot. Daikin UK says the 3MXM-N indoor units share one mode. Different temperatures in that same mode are still allowed. Opposite modes are what you give up with one outdoor unit.
Do three condensers need planning where one might not?
They can, in England, because Class G limits how many heat pumps count as permitted development: one on a non-detached house or a flat, two on a detached house, and only when the other tests are met. Three condensers trip that count. The Scottish difference and the cooling-only test are on the planning page.
Can I add a fourth room later?
Not on a three-port outdoor unit that already uses every port. Daikin’s 3MXM68A8 three-room package is sold with all three ports used and no spare. A later loft room then needs another outdoor unit, or a larger model with a free port if the combination chart allows it. These unbranded listings do not publish a spare-port table.
Do the amazon.co.uk listings already make this choice for me?
No. The three listings are titled as three-zone systems, and one contradicts itself about whether an outdoor unit is included. They are not three mono-splits. Choosing an ASIN does not answer wall space, a shared breakdown or opposite-mode heating. Make the layout choice first.
