Triple split air conditioner buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have three rooms that overheat and one stretch of outside wall. A triple split air conditioner puts one outdoor unit and three indoor heads on that wall, each with its own temperature. A 27,000 BTU headline does not prove the rooms can run together, or that the carton is a three-zone system. This guide covers zones, kilowatts, labels and the same-mode limit. The listings are on the [triple split air conditioner comparison](/hub/cooling/triple-split-air-conditioner), at £1,949.00, £2,049.00 and £2,399.00, supply only. Peter F. used those amazon.co.uk fields and public UK sources on 20 October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a triple split is

A triple split, sometimes sold as a 3 zone mini split, is one outdoor unit piped to three indoor units. A single wall split, a dual split and a four-zone kit are different machines. In this amazon.co.uk set only three listings were kept as three-zone systems, and all three are unbranded. Two say a new outdoor unit is required. Model 13214556 at £1,949.00 contradicts itself: one line requires a new outdoor unit and another says an outdoor unit is not required. Until a seller resolves that, you do not know if the carton is a complete three-head kit. Who each listing is for sits on the best triple split air conditioner page. One condenser against three is on the multi split vs three single splits page.

Size each room, then check the outdoor unit

9,000 BTU/h is about 2.6 kW, because 9,000 divided by 3,412 is roughly 2.6. Three zones of 9,000 BTU and a 27,000 BTU headline are about 7.9 kW added on the nameplates. That sum is not combination data. On named multi-splits the outdoor unit is rated on a band of connected indoor capacity, and the outdoor kilowatts need not equal the indoor nameplates added together. Daikin’s 3MXM68A8 package sold as three rooms pairs three 2.0 kW indoor units with a 6.8 kW outdoor unit. Ask which indoor models are allowed on which outdoor model, and whether all three ports may run together. That diversity does not transfer to the Generic 989767 or model 434232, because those pages do not show the chart.

Same mode, different setpoints

Each head can hold its own setpoint. A bedroom at 21°C and a study at 23°C is normal on a standard multi-split. Opposite modes are not. Daikin UK states that the indoor units on the 3MXM-N range share one mode: all cooling or all heating. Heating one room while cooling another needs heat-recovery VRF, a different class of system. These amazon.co.uk listings do not print a same-mode sentence. That absence is not permission. Until the seller’s manual says otherwise, treat a standard triple split as one mode for the house, and get that sentence on the quote.

Labels, gas and the quote

Under the retained energy-labelling rules, A+++ means a SEER of at least 8.50 and a SCOP of at least 5.10. The three amazon.co.uk listings print SEER 23. One also prints a 5-star BEE rating and an efficiency line of A. Those figures are not the GB class. None of these pages shows a GB label or a product fiche. Two listings print R410A. The £1,949.00 listing leaves the refrigerant blank. Joining the pipes is F-gas work: a personal qualification on the circuit, and a company certificate from Refcom, Quidos or Bureau Veritas if the firm installs for other people. REFCOM’s guidance is that pre-charged non-hermetic equipment reaches an end user only with evidence a certified firm will install it. The kit price is not the installed price. Where the outdoor unit may stand is on the planning permission for an outdoor air conditioner page.

Common questions

Is a triple split one outdoor unit and three indoor units?
Yes. One outdoor unit and three indoor heads, usually one per room. A single, dual or four-zone kit is a different product even if the title says multi split. On a quote, look for one outdoor model and three indoor models, not only a 27,000 BTU line.
Can all three rooms run at the same time?
Only if the outdoor unit’s combination data allows every port to run together. Adding three indoor nameplates does not prove that. Daikin’s 3MXM68A8 pairs three 2.0 kW heads with a 6.8 kW outdoor unit. These unbranded listings do not publish a combination table, so ask before you treat 27,000 BTU as three rooms at full output.
Can one room heat while another cools?
Not on a standard triple split. Setpoints can differ, but the rooms share one mode, all heating or all cooling. Daikin UK states that limit for the 3MXM-N range. Heating one room while cooling another needs heat-recovery equipment, which these listings do not claim.
What does 9,000 BTU per zone mean in kilowatts?
About 2.6 kW. Divide 9,000 by 3,412. Three zones add to about 7.9 kW on the nameplates, which is the 27,000 BTU headline. Catalogue heads at 2.0, 2.5 or 3.5 kW are normal on named UK kits. The conversion is the size of the claim, not the heat load of your room.
Why does a listing say SEER 23 if A+++ starts at 8.50?
SEER 23 is not the seasonal scale on a GB energy label. A+++ starts at a SEER of at least 8.50 and a SCOP of at least 5.10. A BEE star row is not that label either. These listings print SEER 23 and do not show a GB fiche. Ask for the fiche, or treat the efficiency line as unverified.
What should the quote name before I pay?
The outdoor model, each indoor model, confirmation that all three ports may run together, the refrigerant, the pipe length, who does the electrical work, and the F-gas firm. Ask for the GB energy label or the product fiche. If the outdoor-unit lines conflict, the quote should say whether the condenser is in the carton.
