How to use a multi split air conditioner

Updated: 21 October 2026

The three remotes look like three separate air conditioners. On a multi split they talk to one outdoor unit, and that unit runs one mode at a time. You can set a different temperature in each room. You should not open the pipework or add refrigerant. This page is for a system that is already fitted. If you are still choosing the kit, start with the [triple split air conditioner comparison](/hub/cooling/triple-split-air-conditioner). Peter F. used UK multi-split manuals on 20 October 2026, not a sheet for these generics. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Set each room, keep one mode

Start with the mode, then the setpoint. On the iQOOL multi manual sold through Appliances Direct, MODE cycles through Auto, Cool, Dry, Fan and Heat. The indoor units share that mode. Each room may have its own target. A bedroom at 21°C and a landing at 24°C, both in Cool, is the ordinary way to run three heads. Daikin’s note on operation-mode conflict says units that are not the priority room go to standby. Cool, dry and fan can run together on Daikin’s wired-remote guide. Heat is the mode that clashes. The iQOOL manual allows fan-only beside heat or cool. Temperatures can differ. The season cannot. If that is why you wish you had three condensers, see multi split vs three single splits.

When a head sits in standby

A head on standby, with a flashing lamp or a blank display, is often a mode clash, not an empty gas charge. Daikin’s FAQ tells you to match the mode to the unit that is running, or to switch the conflicting head off, before you call anyone about refrigerant. Walk the three rooms and check that every remote shows Cool, or every remote shows Heat. Still dead, check the breaker for that head and the isolator by the outdoor unit. A tripped breaker is an electrical fault, not a prompt to open the flare nuts. Adding gas is the wrong first step. Aircon Adviser’s line is that a system which needs gas every year is leaking. GOV.UK requires a personal F-gas qualification to work on the circuit.

Filters, airflow and drips

Dust on the filters is your job. Daikin UK suggests cleaning filters about every two weeks in heavy use and keeping the outdoor unit clear of leaves. If your manual says monthly, follow the manual. Switch the indoor unit off, slide the filters out, vacuum or rinse them with lukewarm water, and let them dry before they go back. A wet filter put straight back can smell. Do not spray cleaner into the coil, and do not remove the top of the outdoor unit. Water indoors is a different fault: a blocked, kinked or disconnected condensate pipe, or an overflowing tray. Switch the system off and call the installer. Ice on the outdoor coil in mild weather, or warm air when the mode is Cool and not in conflict, is also an engineer visit.

Jobs that are not yours

You may set modes, timers and fan speeds, clean filters, and keep the outdoor coil clear from the outside. You may not flare pipe, recover refrigerant, weigh in a new charge, or move a unit that is still charged. GOV.UK’s F-gas rules require a personal qualification for that work. A firm that installs for other people needs a company certificate from Refcom, Quidos or Bureau Veritas. Arriving pre-gassed does not move the joint into DIY. If the system is not on the wall yet, the model numbers belong on the triple split air conditioner buying guide, and siting is on the planning permission for an outdoor air conditioner page. Call a professional for a mode clash you cannot clear, for water indoors, for ice, for a dead head after the breaker check, and for any smell of burning. A yearly re-gas on a sealed system is a leak investigation, not a calendar task.

Common questions

Why has one head gone to standby?
Often because its mode does not match the unit that is already running. Daikin’s conflict note says non-priority units wait until the modes match, or until you switch the conflicting head off. Check all three remotes before you assume the gas is low. If that does nothing, check the breaker, then call the installer. Do not add refrigerant first.
Can I use fan in one room and cool in another?
On several UK multi-split manuals, yes. The iQOOL manual allows fan-only beside heat or cool. Daikin’s wired-remote guide allows cool, dry and fan together, and treats heat as the mode that clashes with cooling. Heat in one room and Cool in another is what puts a head on standby. Your manual wins if the wording differs.
What do I do if water drips indoors?
Switch the system off and protect the floor. Indoor water means the condensate pipe is blocked, kinked or disconnected, or the tray is overflowing. Cleaning the filter does not reconnect a drain. That repair is for the installer who commissioned the unit.
Should I re-gas it every year?
No. A sealed system that needs refrigerant every year has a leak, which is the line Aircon Adviser publishes, and finding it is F-gas work. GOV.UK requires a personal qualification before anyone works on the circuit. A service can include cleaning and a pressure check. It should not be a routine top-up with no leak test.
Can I install the pipes myself if it arrives pre-charged?
No. Pre-charged means the outdoor unit already holds refrigerant. Joining the pipes releases that circuit, which is category 1 F-gas work. REFCOM’s guidance is that pre-charged non-hermetic splits go to an end user only with evidence a certified firm will install them. Leave the flares, the vacuum and the electrics to that firm.
Do these amazon.co.uk listings include Wi-Fi?
Not on the fields recorded. B0D2JFVG8Z, B0CZC1Z6XN and B0CZLXM4TB state a remote and do not state Wi-Fi. Do not buy one on the assumption of an app. If a later listing adds Wi-Fi, the app still cannot put one room in heat and another in cool on a standard multi-split.
