How to use a bladeless fan

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already own a loop fan or a hidden-impeller tower, and a retailer FAQ has told you it is generally fine to leave it running. Electrical Safety First says the opposite: do not leave an electric fan on overnight or while you are out. This page is how to use a bladeless fan in a UK room: where it stands, what the timer is for, how to clean it, and when you unplug and stop. It does not rank models. Placement and cleaning are the job. The listings themselves are on the [Bladeless fan comparison](/hub/cooling/bladeless-fan). Peter F. used those listings and public UK sources. Put it where the air can move

Stand the tower upright on a flat floor, not on books and not on a bed. Keep the cable out of the walkway and the intake off the curtain and the wall. A hidden impeller still needs a clear rear grille. If you push the back against a sofa, the motor works harder for less air. Leave the aim off your face and off a sleeping child’s face. GOV.UK says to use a fan below 35°C and not to aim it at the body, because that can lead to dehydration. The fan does not refrigerate the room. Eight hours is about 6 pence at 30 W and about 13 pence at 60 W, at Ofgem’s 26.32 pence per kWh for 1 October to 31 December 2026.

Timer, sleep mode and leaving the room

Use the timer so the run has an end. Stated timers here run from about 1 hour up to 8, 9 or 12 hours. Sleep mode usually drops the speed and, on some DREO bullets, switches the display off. That is comfort, not permission to leave the house. Electrical Safety First says do not leave the fan running overnight or while you are out, and keep working smoke alarms. Which? repeats that warning. Currys is more relaxed about a clean tower overnight. Do not follow that retail line. Speeds and lights are on bladeless fan for the bedroom.

Clean it without soaking the motor

Unplug first. Pull the plug, do not just tap the remote, and let the fan stop. Vacuum the rear grille with a soft brush. Wipe the shell with a lightly damp cloth. Do not soak the vents, the buttons or the motor, and wait until it is dry before you plug it in. DREO’s copy on the white DR-HTF007 talks about a removable rear grille and an impeller wheel. Open a cover only if the manual says so. A loop is a wipe of the ring and the base. The Midea H13 claim and the EcoNour HEPA 13 reminder at 720 hours are cartridges, not dust on the shell. How the types differ is on the bladeless fan buying guide.

When you stop

Stop, and do not plug it back in, if it smells of burning, if the noise becomes a grind, or if the plug crackles. A damaged cable is the same stop. If the circuit trips again, leave the fan out. The Cruiser Pro remote includes a CR2025. Keep cells away from children. If one may have been swallowed, go to A&E or call 999 even with no symptoms, and do not give food or drink. The Princess remote uses two AAA batteries, not included. If someone is not settling in the heat, use NHS 111 or 999.

Common questions

Where should the fan stand, and where should it not point?
Put it upright on a flat floor with the intake clear of curtains, walls and bedding, and keep the cable out of the walkway. Use oscillation to move air across the room. Do not aim the jet at your body or at a sleeping child. GOV.UK gives that aim rule for hot weather below 35°C, because a blast on the skin can dehydrate you. The fan still does not refrigerate the room.
Can you leave it on all night?
Electrical Safety First says no. Do not leave an electric fan running overnight or while you are out, and keep working smoke alarms. A timer is safer than an endless run, and it does not authorise you to leave the house. Currys is more relaxed on its tower-fan page. This guide follows the charity, and Which? notes the same warning.
How do you clean a tower if you cannot see blades?
Unplug it, vacuum the grille with a soft brush, and wipe the shell with a barely damp cloth. Keep water out of the motor and the controls, and let it dry before you plug it in. Open a rear cover only if that model’s manual says the cover comes off. A loop is a wipe. A hidden impeller is still a rotor behind the grille.
What do you do with a remote battery, including a CR2025?
The Cruiser Pro components line includes a CR2025. Store spare and flat cells where children cannot reach them. If one may have been swallowed, go to A&E or call 999 even with no symptoms, and do not give food or drink. The Princess remote takes two AAA batteries, which are not in the box. That is a different cell, and it is still not a toy.
What is the fan for on a day under 35°C, and what changes above that?
Below 35°C a fan can help you feel cooler if you are not sitting in the blast. Shade the room and open windows only when the air outside is cooler and it is safe. At or above 35°C, NHS and GOV.UK do not present the fan as the fix. Check on people at higher risk. Heatstroke symptoms are an emergency, not a reason to turn the dial up.
